You can do a lot in making the chilly conditions bearable for them. “The most basic thing that the stray puppies need in this season is warmth. This is the season where one can see maximum number of newly born puppies. They can be provided temporary shelter in a back alley that is safe from cars. There, they can put lots of boris (gunny bags) for the mother and the puppies,” says Geeta Seshamani, co-founder and vice president, Friendicoes. There are many places in the city where you will find stray dogs well-fed, wearing coats, and lying on mattresses. “There are about 10-15 dogs in Khan Market that are clothed, vaccinated and fed by two or three locals,” says Mohan Kadam of Windsor in Khan Market. “I give milk and bread to the dogs on the ITO bridge. I feed them while coming from office,” says Mehak Aggarwal, a resident of Preet Vihar. Not only dogs, there are other stray animals that people also take care off. “I have been feeding a stray cow and her newly born calf. I feed her around eight chapat- tis with jaggery everyday, so that she can keep warm. She is also fed peanuts, pea shells and leafy vegetables by other people,” says Shubhra Singh, a resident of Mayur Vihar. This winter, do something special for stray animals in the city.
