Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015

The birth centenary of Shri Yashwantrao Chavan (1913 - 1984) was celebrated last year in a befitting manner by the Government of Maharashtra and the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan, Mumbai. It was an acknowledgement of his stellar contribution as first Chief Minister to the making of modern Maharashtra, as a State with progressive policies and a decentralized democratic set up of administration.

In November, 1962, he became the Defence Minister in the aftermath of the India-China conflict. He worked hard to restore the morale of the armed forces and to enhance his strength through modern weapons, better equipment, organisational changes and a harmonious relationship with the armed forces. The efforts paid off in the India-Pakistan conflict in 1965. Subsequently, he held the high offices of Union Home Minister, Union Finance Minister and Foreign Minister of India. In 1979, he became the Deputy Prime Minister of India. He was a freedom fighter, effective parliamentarian and an astute administrator. He was a connoisseur of fine arts, a great lover of books and an author of acknowledged literary merit. He was very fond of watching good films, plays and stage performances of folk-art. The 'Yashwant' International Film Festival is a tribute to the outstanding personay of Yashwantrao Chavan.

Yashwant Intl. Film Festival 2015

Since the inception of the Yashwant International Film Festival (YIFF) four years ago, we have made sure to offer a unique experience to all those who are a part of this festival. We are proud of the fact that YIFF as a festival is able to distinguish itself and stand out as a favorite amongst filmmakers and delegates alike. The festival is a great opportunity for film enthusiasts and filmmakers to interact with each other and enrich one another with their thoughts, ideas and stories. The world always has its share of problems, but a world where people watch films and continue to love cinema is a world where there is always hope for the future. At the Yashwant International Film Festival and Pune International Film Festival this year we remember two events that shook the world - 2014 saw the centenary of the First World War and it has also been 25 years since the fall of the Berlin wall. These two events were vastly different in nature - one left a deadly trail of death and destruction in its wake and the other brought people together. However, both have something in common - they gave rise to an enormous amount of literature and art. It is through such creative endeavours that humans try to comprehend the world around them and build bridges with people. If human beings try to love each other instead of fighting each other, the world will be a much better place. Cinema is one such medium that makes it possible to encompass the entire humanity, to tell stories about humankind and to thus spread a message of universal peace, love and tolerance. Being a technology-driven medium, Cinema also shows how modern technology and innovation can bring people together in a kindred spirit. At YIFF, we are presenting exclusive four films regarding humanity and world peace. We would like to encourage all our participants to make connections with people all over the world through this magical medium we all love! On behalf of team YIFF, I welcome you to the 5th edition of the festival and do hope that you enjoy yourself as much as we have in presenting this festival to you.

He is a night watchman and she is a musician. When they move to Rome for work reasons, things are already bad between them, and the change only worsens their sentimental inertia. In fact they begin to live in two different temporal dimensions: Rossana locks herself up in their home as if it were a cage, while Zeno spends his nights doing rounds across the city with his lively and easy-going colleague Tom. Zeno's friendship with Tom, and particularly with Ela, a young foreign barmaid, is a comfort for him, but also creates significant inner turmoil.

Synopsis:“Rocks in My Pockets” is a story of mystery and redemption. The film is based on true events involving the women of the director's family, including herself, and her battles with madness. It raises questions of how much family genetics determine who we are and if it is possible to outsmart one's own DNA. The film is packed with visual metaphors, surreal images and the director's twisted sense of humor. It is an animated tale full of art, women, strange daring stories, Latvian accents, history, nature, adventure and more.

Synopsis:The workings of destiny are inscrutable. One day you read your horoscope in your favorite magazine "The Secret World of Animals" and the stars tell you to change your life and quit your job. Rather than risk the ire of higher spheres, you hand in your notice and, quite by chance, you come across the author of said horoscope in the kebab shop where you no longer work. Sharing existential insecurities, you find common ground and discover that marketing is a line of work that requires intuition rather than any specialist training. A carpet shop, which has never had a single customer cross its threshold, is an ideal place to start a business. The staff there harbors huge potential for eccentricity, and their lukewarm position on floor coverings presents you, as self-styled professionals, with something of a challenge.

Synopsis:The rhythm of life, even for a master drummer, is at the same moment disrupted and harmonized by the love, passion, jealousy, hate and spite of those around. Unni, unequaled in the art of playing the Chenda, and Nalini, peerless in Mohiniyattam, are drawn to each other by an affection that transcends the devotion to their arts and the love for each other. The pulse of their passion cannot hold up against the tumults of Unni's life. A brother and a father figure, whose love sours to jealousy and hate, a wife who despises his drumming and a mother from whom the truth about his birth is not forthcoming all hasten the tempo of a mental imbalance rooted in Unni's childhood to an inevitable dark end.

MARATHICINEMA

Synopsis:Budhi is a widow from a village in the Vidarbha district who has lost her husband and son to farming-related debts. She has a set routine: she wakes up in the morning, spends a few rupees on a daily breakfast of jaggery-laced tea and bread, earns her living as a maid, and spends time with Sudama, who lives in the shack next to hers. The munificence of a visiting politician breaks the pattern of forced minimalism. Budhi now has more liquidity than before, not enough to lift her out of poverty, but enough to be able to change the broken glass in her spectacles and afford a new frame for her beloved son's portrait and clothes for Sudama's family. Budhi and Sudama set out to the local market for a shopping expedition, setting into motion an unexpected series of events.

Garance is briefly intrigued/involved with them all, but leaves them when they attempt to force her to love them on their terms, rather than her own.

CHILDREN OF PARADISE LES ENFANTS DU PARADIS

Marcel Carné was born on 18 August 1906 in Paris, France. The son of a cabinet maker, Carné entered the movies as the assistant of Jacques Feyder. At the age of 25 he directed his first movie “Jenny” (1936). Collaborating with writer Jacques Prévert, production designer Alexandre Trauner, musician and composer Maurice Jaubert and actor Jean Gabin he became the great director of the pre-war era of French cinema with his poetic realism style. During the occupation of France by Nazi-Germany he worked in the Vichy zone where he subverted the regime's attempts to control art by making “Children of Paradise” (1945), a clear anti-nazi parabola and an all time classic of French cinema.

Robert Bresson (1901 - 1999) was a French film director known for his spiritual, ascetic and aesthetic style. He contributed notably to the art of film and influenced the French New Wave. He is often referred to as the most highly regarded French filmmaker after Jean Renoir. Initially also a photographer, Bresson made his first short film, “Les affaires publiques” (Public Affairs) in 1934. During World War II, he spent over a year in a prisoner-of-war camp - an experience which informs “Un condamné à mort s'est échappé ou Le vent souffle où il veut” (A Man Escaped). In a career that spanned fifty years, Bresson made only 13 feature-length films. This reflects his meticulous approach to the filmmaking process and his non-commercial preoccupations.
