Streetcar Expansion StudyThe Florida Department of Transportation and the City of Tampa will conduct a $1.6 million study on a potential expansion of the historic streetcar system. Currently, the streetcar line runs 2.7 miles through downtown Tampa and Ybor City. The study will look at the impact of extending the streetcar service through downtown to the Marion Transit Center and possibly Tampa Heights while exploring ways to improve

ridership and the system’s efficiency. Public workshops will be held at the Tampa Bay History Center at 5:30 p.m. on March 7, April 4 and May 2. If you are unable to attend the meeting, you can share your thoughts at www.tampagov.net/Streetcar.

Ybor’s festival season has kicked off with the annual Krewe of Sant’ Yago Illuminated Knight Parade and the 70th Annual Fiesta Day. Next up, from March 2-9, Ybor rolls out the red carpet for the Gasparilla International Film Festival that showcases independent filmmakers from around the world. On March 11, the Rough Riders will host their annual Pub Crawl, which is followed a week later by the annual Rough Riders St. Patrick’s Parade on March 18. The Tampa Pride Parade and Festival returns to the district March 25 with the theme Community Super Heroes. The Lions’ Eye Institute will host its annual 5K Race for Sight in the early morning hours of April 1 and the 6th Annual Cuban Sandwich Festival will take place March 31 and April 1. Festa Italiana, a four-day festival, will take place April 6-9 and includes Wines of Italy, Bocce Tournament, Homemade Wine Contest, Italian Idol Talent Contest and the famous Festa Sunday Cultural Food Festival. Visit YborCityOnline.com for more information.

21st And 22nd Streets are Truck-free

Once a rumbling commute for truck traffic, Ybor’s 21st

and 22nd streets are now a pedestrian-friendly boulevard featuring wider sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes, on-street parking, historic lampposts, new streetscape and landscaping. For years, it was a major truck route through the Port of Tampa. Trucks are now banned from driving through Ybor City unless local deliveries are being made. FDOT, in partnership with the City, completed the two-year construction project and formally announced the No Truck Zone, during a sign unveiling ceremony in late 2016.
