26 September 2013, Hyderabad: Yashoda Group of Hospitals, in association with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), ‘Save the Children’, - independent charitable organization that helps children in need and Sahaaya Foundation launched a campaign, ‘Donate your Extra Weight’, a community health initiative by Yashoda Hospitals to create awareness in the community on health problems associated with excessive weight. A recent study led by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), ranked India at the forefront of an obesity epidemic. Statistics point to an increase in overweight or obese citizens by 20%. Currently, one in 6 women and one in 5 men are overweight in India. Indeed, there is a dire need to trim, as obesity figures are bulging dangerously at a staggering 70 million in India. In addition, according to WHO statistics, India accounts for approximately 60% of the world’s heart disease and about 6,300 Indians are diagnosed with heart diseases every day, with 40% under the age of 40 years. As a part of the campaign, Yashoda Hospitals urge people in the community to donate their excess weight through exercise and diet. For each KG weight lost by them, Yashoda will donate Rs. 50/- to ‘Save the Children’, an independent charitable organization that helps children in need. Sahaaya Foundation, a regional NGO, is instrumental in raising awareness for the campaign. Overweight has been associated with a number of health problems, such as high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. The campaign is designed to increase awareness of fitness in the community and also create an atmosphere that develops health habits. The initiative is aimed to reduce the incidence of obesity and overweight while raising awareness of healthy lifestyle practices through preventative initiatives. ‘Donate your Extra Weight’ campaign calls on everyone in the community to be wary about the problems associated with being overweight in light of incontrovertible evidence that overweight & obesity is one of the major risk factors for heart diseases.

Eminent International Cardiologists from Japan, Korea, Europe and the US attend the Workshop as Faculty

Hyderabad, September 21: As part of its mission to bring the latest in medical science and research, Yashoda Group of Hospitals launched an international cardiology workshop named ‘Basics and Beyond – 2013, an Interventional Cardiology Update’ at Hyderabad International Convention Center (HICC), Novotel, Madhapur, Hyderabad on 21st & 22nd September 2013. Interventional Cardiology, a sub-speciality of cardiology that deals specifically with catheter-based treatment of heart diseases, is a rapidly advancing field. As there have been spectacular changes in this sub-speciality with many cardiac catheterization centres now operating even in the small districts and towns in India, it has become important for all the practicing physicians to stay abreast with the latest techniques and cutting-edge developments. Coronary Heart Disease is growing rapidly and is the top contributor to death in India. As per the National Health Report-2010, India will have the largest heart diseases burden globally and account for 1/3rd of deaths. About 60% of the world’s heart disease population is in India and Indians have a high prevalence of risk factors, and have ischemic heart disease at an earlier age than people in other developed countries The objective of this workshop is to improve the quality of care using contemporary technology by bringing together all the experts in the field at single platform for knowledge exchange. The 2-day workshop explored and examined the most complex cases in interventional cardiology in an atmosphere that encourages rigorous exchange between today’s experts and tomorrow’s thought leaders. Yashoda Hospitals Conducts 3rd Live International Workshop on Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeries

International Surgeons from the US and Singapore to attend the Workshop as Faculty

Hyderabad, Aug’ 9: Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad is organizing and conducting a live international workshop on Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgeries (MICS) for the third time at its Academic Hall on 10th August 2013. The aim of the workshop is to discuss the latest advances and improved outcomes of MICS and show the surgeons in and around India, thus taking it to the next level. Standard procedures for heart surgery can be most invasive as they involve 10"-12" incision (cut). An MICS procedure is often performed through a smaller 3"-4" incision placed between the ribs, and sometimes even with smaller incisions. Advantages of MICS include minimum hospitalization, minimal blood loss, faster recovery, cosmetic advantages (no big scar on the chest), lower infection rate, lesser post surgical complications and even lower overall cost. Nearly 200 eminent doctors from all over India and Sri Lanka and renowned international cardiac surgeons will attend the workshop as faculty. International faculty

include Dr. Jaishankar Raman from Rush University Medical Center, Department of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery, USA; and Dr. Theo Kofidis, Associate Professor, Head – division of Adult Cardia Surgery, Dept. of Cardiac, Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, National University of Singapore. Dr. Alla Gopala Krishna Gokhale, HoD, Department of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad, will preside over the live workshop to facilitate smooth interactions between the audience and the faculty and contribute to the workshop’s success. Dr Gokhale has one of the largest experiences in India in these surgeries. Two live cases – bypass surgery and mitral valve surgery – will be performed using the minimal access approach in this workshop. Speaking about the workshop, Dr. Gokhale, said, “We all know, one day most of the cardiac surgeries have to become minimal access procedures without compromising on the long term results and patient safety. Whether, we accept it or not, MICS is where we are headed now. Cardiac surgeons have to move ahead with the latest technology and patient demands. For some patients, this is going to be a big boon. However, this cannot happen overnight. It is only possible with persistent movement in this direction by the professionals. The goal of this workshop is moving surgeons towards this direction”. Drawing attention to the advantages of MICS, he said, “In an open-chest surgery, the heart and its vessels are exposed through median sternotomy, where the breastbone is sawed open down the midline and then pulled apart. This is an extremely invasive and the most traumatic part of a standard heart surgery. In comparison, a minimally invasive procedure uses small incisions to access the heart without stopping the heart or cutting the breastbone and ribcage. It causes lesser trauma with faster recovery time and lowers risk of complications such as bleeding and infection. In just three weeks, patients can resume day-to-day activities and even return to their jobs”. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. G. S. Rao, Managing Director, Yashoda Group of Hospitals said “Yashoda Heart Institute has earned the reputation of being a leader in heart care performing approximately 10,000 procedures annually including heart and lung transplantations. We have made great strides in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery performing thousands of procedures and surgeries with precision and success. The Institute’s success is the result of a 20-year tradition of caring and innovation nurtured by Yashoda Group. This live workshop will not only highlight the advantages but will also talk about taking this procedure to its next logical level.” Press Release

‘Yashoda Hospitals’ gives a new lease of Life to a premature 26 week-old boy weighing just 550 gms.

Hyderabad, April 18: A 24 year old software professional delivers a premature baby boy born at just 26 weeks. The boy, born at Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad on 23rd January 2013, was just 550 grams at the time of birth. Mrs. Deva Gayathri (24), was referred to Dr V. Padmini, Gynecologist & Obstetrician,

Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad at a very critical state in her 25th week of pregnancy. She was advised termination by outside docors. Dr Padmini took up the challenge and managed her with multiple anti hypertensive medications. After 1 week she decided to deliver the fetus in view of uncontrolled hypertension after proper counseling involving the Neonatologist. Premature births (before 37 completed weeks of gestation) of babies have become common. Every year, an estimated 15 million babies are born preterm, and this number is rising. The chances of survival of preterm babies are very less. An estimated 1 million babies die annually from preterm birth complications and it is the leading cause of newborn deaths (babies in the first four weeks of life) and the second leading cause of death after pneumonia in children under five years. In India, the neonatal mortality rate (2010) is 32 per 1000 live births an year. According to a report published recently (2012), India has the highest number of deaths due to premature births, and ranks 36th in the list of pre-term births globally. The ranking included 199 countries. Of the 27million babies born in India annually (2010 figure), 3.6 million are born premature, of which 303,600 do not survive due to complications. Speaking about the condition of the baby, Dr. T.P. Kartik, Paediatrician & Neonatologist, Yashoda Hospital, Secunderabad said, “I was handed over a male baby and I had to take up the challenge of making the baby survive. The baby was just 550 grams and would fit in our palms. The survival of such incredibly low birth-weight children is abysmally low in the best of the hospitals," Soon after the birth, the boy’s incredible fight to survive began. And it was a tough battle as well for his mother Deva Gayathri and the doctors. All the doctors knew that the survival rate of such premature babies is less than 10%. "While it is not possible for us to duplicate the conditions similar to a womb, we tried our best, providing the most advanced critical care, with minimum noise, light and painful stimuli," Dr. Kartik, said. The boy was intubated (insertion of a tube into an external or internal orifice of the body) in the operation theater due to poor respiration as the lungs were not fully developed. Appropriate medicines were given immediately. Later, the boy was shifted to level III NICU and ventilator support was continued. The boy was on oxygen support for more than 6 weeks. Presently, after 88 days, the boy is with the mother and gaining good weight. The ‘Wonder Boy’ currently weighs 1475 grams. Advances in medical technology and hospitals with state-of-the-art equipment have allowed pediatricians to provide premature infants mechanical ventilation, intravenous nutrition and artificial surfactant. However, prevention of major complications related to prematurity still remains elusive.
