As part of a longstanding partnership with Scienceworks, which is located less than a kilometre from our Yarraville Terminal, we sent a team of Mobil ambassadors to assist with the museum’s school holiday program. The program explored the concept, ‘What is the work of an engineer.’ With a steady stream of families passing through the doors throughout the autumn school holidays, our ambassadors were kept extremely busy running hands-on activities and answering all manners of questions from budding scientists and engineers. Nurin Veis, General Manager of Scienceworks, said Mobil’s support of the holiday program was invaluable. “These activities have been designed to ignite curiosity in the next generation around the themes of engineering and science, delivered through interactive workshops, lightning room shows, conducting tours of the collection store, pumping station, as well as activating spot talks led by engineering experts.” With so much interest and engagement with these sessions from young children, we can safely say that interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) fields remains strong and so too does the future of Australian engineering. Making a difference in the community with iPadsThe South Kingsville Community Centre is a hive of activity throughout the week, especially Saturdays when their amazing team run the Saturday Disability Respite program. Catered towards children aged between 5 and 18, the program encourages participation and socialisation with regular outings.

To assist the team in engaging the children with the programs, Mobil made a donation of three iPads which fulfil a variety of special communication, sensory and educational purposes during the Saturday activities.

Yarraville Terminal Manager Michael Singh said he was pleased that his team could assist such a worthwhile cause. “All children deserve to enjoy themselves, learn and socialise regardless of their circumstances and we are so happy to be able to help South Kingsville Community Centre with this donation,” said Michael.

On November 29, Mobil took a large step forward in its quest to bring the magnificence of opera to a wide audience, with a spectacular Mobil Night at the Opera in the Williamstown Town Hall.

The free concert, presented in conjunction with Opera Australia, Orchestra Victoria and Hobsons Bay Council, featured some of the most recognisable and cherished arias from Puccini, Verdi, Bizet and Rossini, including the heart-rending O mio babbino caro, the joyful Brindisi and the rousing, crowd favourite, Nessun Dorma.

We have a long history of promoting opera to a wider audience in this country. For over three decades we have been working with Opera Australia on this endeavour.

This year, we are working together to fill the Williamstown Town Hall with school children to give them a wonderful taste of world-class opera. For many, this will be the first time they have experienced live singing of this standard.

2018 is shaping up to be a year of exciting progress at the Yarraville Terminal with the upcoming completion of two major projects which will support Yarraville terminal’s important role in Victoria’s fuel supply chain. One of these projects is the Yarraville Jet Fuel Pipeline Project, which commenced in early 2016 and consists of a new 2.6 kilometre pipeline that will connect Yarraville terminal to the Somerton pipeline, which transfers jet fuel to Melbourne Airport. This will help Mobil to meet the ever-increasing demand for jet fuel at Melbourne airport.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank any of our neighbours who may have been impacted by this pipeline’s construction for your patience while we completed these important works which will increase the reliability of Mobil’s supply of jet fuel to Melbourne Airport.

Another major project that is set for completion is the construction of our two new fuel storage tanks which began in November 2016.

These new tanks will increase our capacity for jet fuel and unleaded fuel storage and will help us meet Victoria’s growing demand for transportation fuels. It ’s an exciting time at Yarraville and we look forward to sharing updates from new projects and community initiatives in the near-future.

Falling in love with operaAustralia and New Zealand Refining Manager Riccardo Cavallo said that Mobil was very proud of its long-standing relationship with the Opera Australia.

“My wish for people who are experiencing their first time at the opera is that you fall in love with it and discover the passion behind it as I did,” he said.

“This is our way of saying thank you to our community.”

The Mayor of Hobsons Bay City Council, Councillor Angela Altair, said that the local community always looked forward to The Mobil Night at the Opera.

“This is such a well-loved event for so many of our community members with a rich love of the arts, like myself,” she said.

“These kinds of events play a substantial role in bringing people together in our community and we are proud to offer these experiences in our city.”

“This is our way of saying thank you to our community.”

In the lead up to the 2018 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Mobil held an exclusive event at the Go Kart Club Victoria circuit with Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo and Australia’s 2018 Grid Kids to help inspire the next generation of local racing champions.

As part of a press conference where kids played the role of journalists, Daniel shared his goals and aspirations for the season, talked to the Grid Kids about the importance of teamwork and quality fuel and design. This led to a discussion about the science behind Mobil fuels and lubricants and their role in Formula 1 racing.

The Grid Kids also participated in a time challenge race against Ricciardo whose Kart was awarded to ten-year-old Cadel Ambrose who recorded the fastest time… after Daniel of course. Mobil wishes Daniel the best of luck for the rest of the Formula 1 season.
