Cops not ‘liking’ burglar picsBY DAVID SCHOUT

POLICE are warning victims of crime not toemulate a Facebook user who posted his ownCCTV photos of a Chirnside Park robberyearlier this month.

On February 8, Justin McDonald postedtwo clear images on his Facebook page of aman robbing his friend’s house about noon theprevious day.

The photos, captured on Mr McDonald’sfriend’s CCTV cameras, went viral with morethan 6000 people ‘sharing’ the photo via theirown Facebook pages in an effort to catch thethief.

The photos clearly revealed a middle-agedman in a grey T-shirt, who allegedly spent 15minutes going through the house.

The photo caption read: ‘‘Please let me knowif you recognise him, I’m happy for this to bepassed on so we can catch [him]!’’

Detective Senior Sergeant Allan Price, of

Lilydale police, confirmed officers were invest-igating.

He said that while it was entirely legal topost images from your house on Facebook, victims needed to be careful when sharinginformation on the internet as it could affectthe outcome of a court case.

‘‘If I’m a victim I’m going to think aboutdoing the same thing. It’s an understandableresponse,’’ Senior Sergeant Price said.

‘‘But people have to be careful of a) jeopard-ising the case and b) becoming a victim them-selves if the offender decides to take actionagainst them.’’

Although the man is yet to be charged, aVictoria Police spokesman said social media

comments — of which Mr McDonald’s photohad more than 300 — needed to be treatedwith caution.

‘‘Victoria Police understands setting up apage or site may help people feel like they areactively doing something to help a policeinvestigation.

‘‘However, where sites aren’t activelymonitored it may encourage speculationand false information to be posted, which canhave a harmful impact on police investiga-tions.’’

The spokesman said although in this case theburglar was yet to be charged, social mediacommentators had to be careful.

‘‘If a matter is resolved and a criminal invest-igation has started, comments on social mediamay potentially affect the outcome of courtmatters relating to the investigation.’’

Senior Sergeant Price said he expected thesesort of cases involving social media to increase. The Weekly could not contact Mr McDonald.

Re: Council’s ‘no’ to Reflex actionI’m truly disgusted with the new Yarra Rangescouncillors immediately and unnecessarily undoingall the hard work and progressive leadership thatthe old council showed. I don’t understand thepoint in going to lengths to ‘undo’ what hadalready been voted in by one council if it doesn’timpact on the council’s operation. It sounds like thenew councillors are marking their territory andappear to be creating a clear division in the council.I feel it’s the beginning of many ‘undoings’ that aregoing to see our ‘green’ council go backwards —right at a time when it is crucial that we show lead-ership in Earth stewardship. Progress at all costshas proven to be detrimental; we live in a part of thestate that needs to be protected. What hope havewe got when our own council cannot even advocatefor environmental sustainability.

Disgusted (via web)

Re: New laws hold anti-loggers backMal Sissins’ over emotional breast-beating, wailingand hair-tearing over the Leadbeater possum’s sup-posed demise, (Your Voice, February 19) is as fanci-ful as the supposed effects of man-made globalwarming on the polar bear in the Arctic Ocean! Just

as the polar bear retreats into the tundra (as thebears did before the last mini-ice age at the end ofthe 18th century), the Leadbeater possum findsother habitat; just as it did when Aborigines andlightning started fires.

The same sort of job-killing nonsense as Mr Sis-sins’s was used to stop Boral’s quarry expansion (ofanother mere 20 per cent) just a few years back, within Boral’s very own, 70 years’ established prop-erty’s boundaries in Montrose. All because of anon-existent threat to the Great Owl. The GreatOwl was in such great danger — but it still is nest-ing within Boral’s quarry boundaries and the neigh-bouring reserve in the vast (and protected!) stateforest, merely a short mouse-hunt flight away.

Re: Rubbish pile-up an eyesoreI wish to extend the thoughts of Doug from Ring-wood (Your Voice, February 12) on the constantpiles of hard garbage strewn across nature strips.

When Maroondah Council started the new poli-cy of booking two collections a year a householdrather than the scheduled collections twice yearly, Iwrote to the council with my objections. Theyinformed me that this would be a better way of con-

trolling rubbish collections, give us more choicebeing able to schedule our own and that theybelieve residents were happier with this decision.

Not a day goes by, either walking or drivingaround my suburb, in which I am not confrontedby a messy stack of rubbish. Not to mention theamount of rubbish dumped in service lanes andcommunity areas by residents.

Besides restarting the twice-yearly hard garbagecollections, the council should also bring back thetwo free tip passes we used to get with our rates, forus to use to dispose of things that we cannot includein our hard garbage collection.

C Clayton, Croydon

As a non-driver I frequently walk along the pictur-esque Wilana and Thomas Streets in Ringwood tocatch public transport. Sadly, these streets are rare-ly free of piles of unsightly, unhygienic rubbishdumped on the verge. Many don’t have the council-issued pink slip and sit on the roadside for weeks.

I have been to the Maroondah Council kiosk atEastland shopping centre many times to report thematter. Surely there must be a better way for thecouncil to come up with a solution.

MP-forestry allianceraises hacklesTHE state’s forestry industry and politicianshave strengthened their ties with the launch of abipartisan group to bring the two together.

The parliamentary support group for theforest and wood products industry, which aimsto bring both sides of politics together in a forumwith the industry, was announced last week —much to the chagrin of local environmentalgroups.

The new group was launched by VictorianAgriculture Minister Peter Walsh, who said theforest industries ‘‘have been under a sense ofsiege politically’’.

Mr Walsh said forestry was not just a ruralissue. More than 50,000 downstream jobsexisted in the wood industry, such as trussmanufacturing.

Labor upper house MP John Lenders, whorepresents the south-east metropolitan area, toldthe bipartisan crowd that the industry ‘‘is a jobsissue for all of us’’.

He said he wanted ‘‘industry supported in thisplace on its merits, fairly and transparently’’.

But local environment groups were angered by

the move. Sarah Rees, director of forest conser-vation group My Environment, said currentpoliticians were strongly aligned with the loggingindustry.

‘‘Since Peter Walsh and [parliamentary secret-ary for forestry and fisheries] Gary Blackwoodtook office the support for the logging industryhas blossomed,’’ she said. ‘‘[They] are out oftouch with regional needs.’’

Ms Rees said local priorities had shifted andthe government had to move with it.

‘‘The priorities for the Yarra Ranges are notthe continued tax-propped assault on our forestsbut funding to be directed at improved medicalservices, broadband, TAFEs and eco-tourism.’’

Victorian Association of Forest Industriesspokesman Shaun Ratcliff said ‘‘we’re keen toinvite relevant stakeholders who would play aconstructive role’’.

Asked if the group would host anti-forestrygroups, he said they ‘‘tend not to invite us to theirevents’’.

‘‘It certainly is a pro-forestry group,’’ he said.— David Schout

McDonald’s will be held this Saturday. The

rally will begin in Belgrave in the car park next

plan to march down Burwood Highway to

$8.4m cash lifelinefor Eastern HealthBY YESSAR DAOU

MAROONDAH Hospital’s diabetes educationcentre could remain open after an 11th-hourfunding boost from the federal government.

Health Minister Tanya Plibersek visited thehospital on Thursday to announce a$8.4 million one-off cash grant, which will bepaid directly to the hospital and not through thestate government.

However, Eastern Health would not answerquestions from the Weekly as to how the moneywould be allocated, nor would it confirm that thediabetes centre would now stay open.

‘‘We need time to process this latest develop-ment,’’ said Eastern Health chief executive AlanLilly in a written statement.

‘‘This is an unprecedented situation for ourorganisation.’’

Mr Lilly also would not say whether hospitalbeds will reopen. ‘‘We will review the changesthat have been made and assess how to moveforward in the best interests of our staff and thecommunity.’’

Earlier last week, Eastern Health hadannounced it would be forced to close its dia-betes education centre, to the disappointmentand frustration of its 112 clients and neighbour-ing services that would be forced to shoulder theextra burden. Clients were being referred to hos-pitals in Ringwood, Ferntree Gully and Lilydale.

The $8.4 million boost is part of a $107 mil-lion federal government funding commitmentannounced for Victorian hospitals last week. Itcomes after the state government slashed$475 million from the health budget over fouryears.

Ms Plibersek said the federal government was‘‘tired of the blame game’’ in health funding andwas moving towards a more transparent systemwhere people could clearly see how much moneyboth levels of government were contributing.

‘‘In the future, funding will be tied directly tothe hospitals,’’ she said.

Anyone with concerns is urged to contactDiabetes Australia (9654 8777), which willprovide details of additional diabetes servicesavailable in the client’s local area.

BY YESSAR DAOU

HEATHMONT resident Stephanie Boroswill have to walk an extra 7000 steps a day ifshe is to meet her target as part of CAREAustralia’s Walk in Her Shoes challenge.

"I will definitely be taking some extrasteps,’’ she says with a laugh.

‘‘I’m only taking 3000 or so steps a day atthe moment, so we’re going to be doing extrawalks outside of work.’’

Ms Boros, 28, is taking the challenge withtwo colleagues from her work, and creditsher friend for the inspiration.

‘‘A girlfriend of mine from work is headingover to Africa and she decided to do it,’’ shesays. ‘‘I really enjoy fund-rasing and it seemslike such a good cause.’’

As part of the fund-raiser, participants areencouraged to walk 10,000 steps a day forone week to raise money for CARE Austra-lia, which helps communities in developingcountries.

The idea behind the campaign is thatwomen in developing countries spend hourswalking to collect firewood and water, hours

that could have been spent at school.Participants track their steps with a pedo-

meter provided to them by CARE Australia,as part of the $15 registration.

Ms Boros has so far raised $50, and is hop-ing to reach the $100 mark.

Walk in Her Shoes is running from March18 to 24; registrations close March 17. Toregister, visit walkinhershoes.org.au

Donating a new chance at life

Donating life: Clive Barnard with a picture of his late wife Jeanette, an organdonor. Picture: Rob Carew

BY DAVID SCHOUT

TWENTY years ago, Clive Barnardand his late wife Jeanette made adecision on what should be doneonce their time on earth was over.

The Croydon South couple agreedto donate their organs, believing itmuch better to help someone in needthan ‘‘let the worms get inside you’’.

However, Mr Barnard didn’t thinkthis choice would be played out untilmuch later in life.

His wife suffered a fatal brainaneurism in May last year and herorgans were donated.

In a peculiar way, the grief MrBarnard and his two children still feelis lessened because someone else’s lifehas been enriched.

‘‘It’s very gratifying and movingwhen you are told by donorrecipients that their family memberhas received an organ and havebeen able to live a normal life,’’ hesays.

A strong advocate for organ dona-tion, Mr Barnard acknowledges the

hardship involved in making whatcan be a ‘‘soul-searching’’ decision, but he urges everyone to sign thenational register.

‘‘I respect people with religious orother beliefs; that’s their call. But I’dlike to think other people can start torealise the impact donating can haveon other people’s lives.’’

He encourages all families to sitdown and openly discuss the idea oforgan donation — something EasternHealth nurse donation specialist ErinEast says is very important.

‘‘With one organ and tissue donorhaving the potential to transform thelives of 10 or more people, it’s a vitaldiscussion,’’ she says.

DonateLife Week ends on March3. Its aim is to raise awarenessabout organ and tissue donation, increasing the number of peoplewho share their wishes with theirloved ones.

Golf club plansstuck in a bunkerEASTERN Golf Club’s relocation to Yering maybe challenged in the Supreme Court by the under-bidder for the club’s current course in Doncaster.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy earlier thismonth approved the Yering proposal days beforean appeal was due to be heard.

The Age reported last week that developer BillBoerkamp had instructed lawyers to beginproceedings in the Supreme Court to challengeMr Guy’s decision.

Mr Guy approved the $49 million project at4.30pm on Friday, February 8, ahead of a sched-uled Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunalhearing the following Monday.

The VCAT case was due to be between MrBoerkamp and Yarra Ranges Council, whichapproved the proposal in September last year.

Mr Boerkamp will reportedly take the matterto court if Mr Guy does not reconsider hisdecision.

A spokesman for Mr Guy said he used hisministerial powers to assist the council.

Mr Boerkamp put in an unsuccessful bid forthe club’s course in Doncaster. It was bought bydeveloper Mirvac in mid-2011. Mirvac can onlybegin work on the site — a proposed $1billion,800-dwelling estate — once relocation to Yeringis approved. — David Schout

Honda adds 2WD to CR-V rangeDerek Ogden and Ewan Kennedy road test the new-generation SUV

Bold bid: The new Honda CR-V comes with more radical styling than its predecessors.

Honda CR-V, the fourth generation of thecompact sport utility vehicle that 17 yearsago helped define the soft-roader segment,

now comes in two-wheel or four-wheel-drivevariants.

Prices start with the base model 2WD six-speed manual VTi at just over $27,000, while thetop 4WD VTi-L five-speed automatic rounds outthe range at $42,000-plus.

Previously we considered the Honda CR-Vwas overpriced for a plain ‘meat and three veg’taste of compact SUV living. Thanks as much asanything to a crowded market, that is a thing ofthe past, with the latest CR-Vs dishing up tastyfeatures at competitive prices.

Over the space of 10 days we experienced abroad span of CR-V models, spending time withthe entry-level 2WD in five-speed automaticguise and the top-dog 4WD VTI-L five-speedauto with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift.

The designers and engineers have worked hardon Honda’s theme of ‘bigger on the inside, smaller on the outside’. At 22mm shorter and

30mm lower than its predecessor, the flat frontmakes a bold statement with its three-slat radi-ator grille and big Honda ‘H’.

A sedan-style profile is augmented by largewheel arches spanning 17- or 18-inch wheels

Inside, the cabin is designed to give a feeling ofopenness. With the two front seats further apartthan before, there is more shoulder room.

Occupants are further spoilt by a new level ofcabin quietness thanks to engine and road noisebeing kept at bay by improved sound insulation.

Noise from neither engine on offer – the2.0-litre or 2.4-litre i-VTEC – is intrusive.

Efficiency is the name of the game here withcombined urban/highway fuel consumption putat 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres and 8.7 litres per100 kilometres respectively.

Ride and handling are up there with the best inclass, both with comfort and stability that arealmost sedan-style.

The new CR-V, even in base model 2WDmanual form, is accessory rich. Satellite naviga-tion and DVD are factory fitted options.

Old school: The Toyota LandCruiser 70-Series now comes with dual cab convenience.

Dual cab comes to 70-Series

IF you want a definition of the term‘workhorse’ look no further thanToyota’s 70-Series LandCruiser.

Whether it’s carrying miners or cartinghay bales in every dairy community inAustralia, the 70-Series is a hard-working 4x4 that earns its keep day inday out, year in, year out.

The LandCruiser 70 is an old-school4WD that comes as either a wagon ora cab chassis, the latter range recentlyexpanded to include the option of adual cab. While the addition of therear seats was primarily for the mining

and rural sectors, we would not besurprised to see a few picked up by ser-ious off-roaders as the family getawayvehicle.

All variants are powered, and wemean powered, by a 4.5-litre V8 turbodiesel engine.

Our test vehicle was the dual-cabcab chassis in top-of-the-range spec.

To put the 70-Series through itspaces we took it to the pastures ofsouth-east Queensland and a disusedtin mining area.

Toyota will not be upgrading the

70-Series to modern safety standards,so the vehicle is likely to end produc-tion in about four years.

Like the rest of the vehicle, theinterior is designed for function, notfor looks.

The 70-Series GXL dual cab maywell find a home with 4WD fanaticswho like off-roading in difficult areas. They will not be disappointed.

Prices start at $58,790, not includ-ing government or dealer deliverycharges.

Ariels skipper has sights on titleBY ROY WARD

NETBALLER Caitlyn Strachan wanted to get the bestfrom herself, so she moved to Yarra Valley GrammarAriels before the start of last season.

Now the 25-year-old centre court player wants topush her side to the next level and win the highlyprized Victorian Netball League championshipdivision.

The VNL season starts tomorrow night.Strachan, who tied with Helen Barclay and Mwai

Kumwenda for the Margaret Caldow Trophy as VNLmost valuable player last season, said her side lookedprimed to contend for the premiership despite missingthe finals last year.

“We have worked extremely hard over preseasonand we have a nice balance of youth and experience,”Strachan said.

“The team is coming together really well and theVNL preseason competition has been highly valuablefor us as it gave us the chance to trial a few newcombinations.”

Strachan will captain the Ariels this season, afurther demonstration of how respected she is withinthe side, while Sophie O’Shea and Kaitlyn Black willserve as vice-captains.

Strachan said she had revelled in the structured,well-designed training program which she creditswith leading to her exceptional 2012 season.

“I was looking for new challenges and the Arielswere provided with numerous challenges in terms of

fitness and training programs; on court I thrived,” shesaid. “With Southern Saints, my old side, I was anexperienced, mature player and I was comfortable inmy environment.

“I needed to take myself out of that comfort zone toget new challenges, more training and more structure.

“The Ariels provided me with that extra edge.”With plenty of promising young players in the

Ariels, Strachan says they’re all excited about theaddition of a second Victorian side, Vic Flames, in theAustralian Netball League competition which comes

after the VNL season and works as a feeder league forANZ championship clubs.

“Victoria is such a strong netball state that it’s hardto break into that next level,” she said.

“If we can be extra competitive this year we’llattract more interest from coaches and selectors.’’

Strachan considers her side a serious contender forthe title. “There’s plenty of competition in the VNL,but I believe that this year we have the right mix ofplayers to be extremely competitive, to win the VNLcompetition.”

It’s last roll of the dice forAinslie Park, Warranwood

Hitting high: Kilsyth’s Mark Steiner smashes a shoton Saturday. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

NEWCOMERS Ainslie Park and reigning premi-ers Warranwood are battling for the fourth andfinal spot in the RDCA Lindsay Trollope Shieldcomp and both will chase 203 when the final dayof the regular season arrives this Saturday.

Warranwood (fifth place) looked in controlearly when it had Bayswater Park 5-54 off 34overs.

Josh Temple (63) and Ben Beech (48) then ledthe Sharks out of trouble to the safer waters of203 at day’s end. Tim Hall (5-52) took thebowling honours for Warranwood.

Ainslie Park captain-coach Mark Arnot (7-66)again bowled tirelessly for Ainslie Park (fourthplace) to limit Wantirna South to 9-203.

After sitting at 3-46, Michael McDonald (87not out) and Andrew Jorgensen (39) combinedfor a fourth-wicket partnership of 65 to slowlyimprove the Devils’ innings.

At the other end of the ladder, Norwood(ninth) let South Croydon off the hook.

The Bulldogs were 4-105 off 54 overs just aftertea, but Michael King (88) and Travis Degen-hardt (64) combined for a fifth-wicket partner-ship of 100 to see South Croydon plunder 151runs off the last 26 overs to finish on 8-256.

Kieran Petri-Bruce (5-69) took the

bowling honours for the Vikings.South Warrandyte (10th) needs to defeat Croy-

don North to have any chance in avoiding relega-tion.

Michael Crosbie (86no) batted all day to seethe Hawks compile 197.

Darren Wilson (4-32) and Karnel Ahmet(3-31) made the going tough for the Hawks.

North Ringwood’s bowlers Michael Scott(3-19), Evan Jones (3-26) and Luke Ridgwell(3-32) kept Mooroolbark’s batsmen incheck for the day to see the Barkerscompile 139 in 80 overs, with Lincoln Grigg (63)top scoring.

In Wilkins Cup matches, Kilsyth captain MarkSteiner plundered 137 against a hapless WongaPark at Wonga Park as the visitors made 272 allout.

Dean Letson took 6-40 for Wonga Park, whichwas 0-31 at stumps.

Eastfield was bowled out for 107 by Mon-trose, which ended play on 2-94.

East Ringwood is well-placed against Lilydalewith the Roos ending play on 0-28 after bowlingout Lilydale for 193.

Croydon Ranges made 7-273 againstWarrandyte, which faces a difficult chase thisSaturday while St Andrews posted 251 againstTempleton.

Crocs makeit look easySTRIVING for a finals berth,Coldstream made light work of adisappointing Warburton-Millgrove in the DJ StrachanShield on Saturday.

The Crocs’ first day total of145, looked a little light on andwith Scott Darwall (39) and TroyMurphy negotiating the new ballspell, the Burras looked as if theywere set to chase it down.

But a change of bowlingbrought a dramatic change asLiam Doughty (4-19) and MattJonson combined to tighten thescrews and put the Crocs back inthe contest.

Darwall’s fighting innings keptthe Burras in the match, but withthe destructive Matthew Stark(3-29) and the spin of Harry Bur-nett (2-13) introduced, the visitorscollapsed to a sub-par 80.

Elsewhere, having captured firstinnings points in the final over ofthe first day, Seville’s lower orderset about batting Mt Evelyn out ofany thoughts of chasing outrightpoints.

Despite the early wicket of RyanAkers, some lusty blows fromMatt Tilney (40) and DeanTroyhan, combined with the stub-born Ishara Amarasinghe, ensuredthe Blues reached safety, finishingon 182.

With one round to play, Sevillehas stitched up top spot and ahome semi-final, while it looks asthough Coldstream and Heales-ville will be fighting to host thesecond semi-final.

.The YVCA team made a fist of

Recently Methven Professionals established a Property Investment Division.

Managing Director Geoff Earney, who recently celebrated his 41st year in local real estate, will head the new division. Geoff would love to share his invaluable knowledge and simple strategic philosophy with anyone considering investing in property, whether it’s for the first time or the tenth time.

Geoff has attended many seminars where presenters talk about investing in other states, which he believes is often a mistake, particularly when there are excellent opportunities locally. Geoff said “on many occasions investors would have been much better off if they had have bought local, mid-ranged real estate.”

With Geoff’s local knowledge and personal property investing experience, he believes he will be able to give property investors the advice they need to help them make the right decisions.

Geoff said “property investors should buy a property which they can see and touch in a suburb they understand so that they can easily follow the market in terms of property values and rent returns.”

One of Geoff’s favourite investing maxims is;

“BUY LOCALLY AND KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR INVESTMENT.”
