Known as the lush “Garden Parish”, St. Ann is the place where Columbus’ boats dropped anchor after sighting the then largely unknown island of Jamaica. The parish boasts tropical rainforests, spectacularwaterfalls and views of the ocean, as well as a number of well preserved relics in the form of English and Spanish architecture such as the 17th century Spanish Bridge.

The River’s more well known bridge, the old Spanish Bridge, is the bridge the Spanish army crossed to head into their historic Battle of Rio Nuevo with the British, for rights to the island of Jamaica.

The White River winds through the villages of Lodge and Cascade, cutting through a kaleidoscope of exotic flowers, guava groves, bamboo forests, under apple trees, and across the neighbouring parishes of St. Mary and St. Ann.

ST. ANN: DUNN’S RIVER FALLS

The world-famous Dunn’s River Falls is undisputedly Jamaica’s best known attraction. The falls plummet from over 600ft and flow into the inviting blue-green waters of the Dunn’s River Beach nearby. Climbing the falls brings with it the reward of many small pools of water where one may take a swim, frolic under miniature streams of water or, simply, enjoy the spectacular view.

Given the wide variety of jerk stations and outlets that exists, food connoisseurs can literally eat their way across Jamaica! One of the most famous locations for Jamaican jerk is the Boston Bay Jerk Centre. Every July, thousands of people gather in the parish for a world-class display of culinary creativity at the annual Portland Jerk Festival..

.

JERK FACT • Jerk seasoning is the unofficial national spice of Jamaica, originally engineered by Jamaica's first free Africans: the Maroons. The parish of Portland is its unofficial national homestead.

• If you mix together the three main ingredients: crushed pimento, scotch bonnet pepper and salt, you get the basic jerk formula.
