LOG ENTRY 1937 As many of you will remember we have a standing deal with our crew. You put in 40 hours of hard labor, and you get a to have a day on the bay with your friends aboard. Well several of our dedicated crew members have earned their day over the last several years and here is how they were spent. Matt and Andrea Ihle invited family and friends for a pleasant and quiet picnic sail on the bay. They provided a delicious spread of food which we all enjoyed. That is, until a ferry wake hit, and the food hit the floor! Many hands made for light work, and we were cleaned up and enjoying ourselves again in no time! Marc Herrenbruck chose the day the Blue Angels flew to schedule his sail and boy were we all pleased. He wisely invited a photographer friend of his and we were all delighted by the gorgeous shots he got. If you can, take a look at the link on our facebook page. July 2nd, 1937 Aboard- AW Ford, GW Ford, RD Goodwin, MC Jenkins, Gene Hundley. Underway from yacht harbor. Sailed for awhile in light breeze. July 3 rd - Started Engine- Montera Abeam, after daylight no log kept. Suddenly ran into fog near Davenport and nearly carried away wharf there. 9:30am Arrived Santa Cruz Harbor. Dropped Hook near raft. Sloop “Volante” arrived shortly with Chas Langleis, Stu Hines, Stu Haldora, Vince Jerrice, and Sentos- “Panglima” arrived in afternoon. Gene Hundley left Yankee to return to SF July 4 th , In morning left Santa Cruz for Stillwater Cove. No log kept- Volante made trip with us. Started under power but soon had rough sea and strong breeze. Put on sails and made excellent time reaching across bay. Matt nearly lost overboard while taking pictures. Met in Stillwater Cove by Louise and Connie. Went to Country Club and then to Jenkins residence for dinner. After dinner return aboard for fireworks. Connie, Louise, Jerry Flint, Stan Simondsons, Arthur, Ray, Matt, Geoff, Clara Callender and lovely evening, many fireworks. July 5 th , Sailed back to Santa Cruz with Louise Connie Jerry Flint, Matt, Arthur, Ray, Geoff. Arrive Santa Cruz- Matt Louise Jerry Flint return to Carmel by car. Santa Cruz- Connie and Arthur leave for SF in early morning. Ray and Geoff now in full charge. Santa Cruz- Ray and Geoff make shore excursion. Santa Cruz- Ray and Geoff capsize small boat Santa Cruz- In evening Arthur, Bing Ray and Louie Cantell arrive. Santa Cruz- Milling around till midnight then all hands aboard and anchor aweigh. July 11 th , 12:05 AM Crew- Arthur, Bing, Geoff, Ray, Louie, Under Power- Monterey Light Port Bow. 3:25AM Monterey Lt. Pt. Pines abeam 5:30 am Put on Main and Jib, Still under power 7:30am Pt. July 2nd, 1937 Aboard- AW Ford, GW Ford, RD Goodwin,

July 3rd- Started Engine- Montera Abeam, after daylight

no log kept. Suddenly ran into fog near Davenport and

July 5th, Sailed back to Santa Cruz with Louise Connie Jerry

Flint, Matt, Arthur, Ray, Geoff. Arrive Santa Cruz- Matt

Louise Jerry Flint return to Carmel by car.

Santa Cruz- Connie and Arthur leave for SF in early morning.

Ray and Geoff now in full charge.

9:00 am Trying to get a little help from the wind

4:40pm Stopped engine to service, Started again

7:00pm Under power with main and Jib on.

July 12th 1:00AM Sounded gas tanks- 20 Gals

2:00 am Sounded gas again, shut off port tank

3:00am sighted ship port bow.

3:30am Sighted Pt. Arguello Lt. 2 points port bow

4:00am Out of gas, sail only

5:00am put on fore

7:00 am Just drifting very light breeze

Noon Pt. Arguello Lt. abeam, bearing north course east

4:50 pm Point Conception abeam

BLUE ANGELS AND PICNICS ON THE BAY

Hello gang, well it has been quite a while and

frankly I wish I had more to report. It was a

slower summer between new babies and other

activities. Please enjoy below, a log entry from

1937 (!), cruising news, and some news about the

crew. We are looking forward to a more active

year in 2011!

LOG ENTRY, JULY 1937

10:00 pm Just flapping around- no breeze

July 13th, 5:00 am Drifted along until dawn. No wind at all

7:00 am Had trouble getting engine started as magnets showed

trouble. Finally got it started and powered into Santa Barbara

Harbor

8:00 am Santa Barbara alongside Union Oil dock. Took aboard

provisions, 75 gallons gas, fish hooks. Mechanic repaired

engine. Crew felt land sick while shopping.

2:00 pm Left Santa Barbara put on sail set course for Prisoners

Harbor, Santa Cruz Island

2:15pm sails on, good breeze, Whistle Buoy abeam

3:15pm boiling along 8 ¼ knots logged

4:00pm Ray hits bunk

5:00pm Arrived at Prisoners Harbor. Anchored 50 yds off shore

west of dock in 3-4 fathoms. Yo-Ho-Ho abeam to west. All

hands invited to BBQ on beach with Justy Caire. Entertained by

Capt. Eddies Show Boat. Carey Stanton present.

July 14th, 10:00 am- Underway for Painted Caves. Picked up

our fishermen who had started out in small boat. They had

their first fish. Crew of Yo-Ho-Ho aboard. Towing both small

boats. Ed Faisal, Bob Buckles, Chas O’Brien.

10:20 am Engine Conked. All hands offer suggestions. Much

monkeying with lots of gadgets.

11:30 am Engine decides to go after we put up main and jib.

Beat up west coast of Santa Cruz Island.

2:00pm Arrive at cave just west of Painted cave and anchor in 6

fathoms under high cliffs 25 yds from shore. Put Geoff ashore

to take movies. All hands in the small boats under outboard

power stood around point to mouth of cave- Here we were

greeted by roaring and barking of seals. Entrance to cave a

beautiful sight the lava formations being of all colors. Inside

the cave it is so dark that even the long flashlights were of

little help. We rowed around in cave for some time Returned

to Yankee via another cave just west of Anchorage.

3:00pm Underway for return to Prisoners Harbor under Jib,

Main and Power.

4:00pm Arrive Prisoners harbor and anchor same spot as

before.

4:15pm Justy Caire picked up all hands and we rode in Chevy

Truck to the main ranch 2.5 miles inland up the river. The

country is beautiful. The ranch like an old Spanish village.

Many of original adobe buildings still in use. Large brick winery

build 1890, small church, barns, shearing sheds, silos,

Blacksmith shop, saddler etc. Plenty of water for farming-

Alfalfa fields, corn fields, vineyard, orchard etc. Justy had

another fine BBQ in front of big house half a lamb etc. Back

to harbor again in truck.

July 15th 11:15 AM- Underway for other side of Island. Ran

close to shore exploring caves and anchorages in small boat.

Thousands of seals along shore and in caves. Coast line here

quite barren.

1:00 pm Potato Harbor abeam. Looks very good and we

decide to revisit later. Louie caught a fish.

1:45 San Pedro Pt. abeam

2:00pm Smugglers Cove abeam

2:15 pm Engine conked- Louis caught a fish. It bit him.

2:30pm Put on all sails

3:00 pm Engine started. Took in sail

3:30pm Sand stone point abeam. We are now on seaward

side of Island. Sea like glass. Towing boat.

5:10pm Dropped anchor in Coches Prietas anchorage in ½-3.

Bing and Louie ashore to investigate lobster situation. No

Luck. Make excursions in small boat.

6:30 pm Cocktail hour and very pleasant too. Dinner served

at 7:30pm and very good

8:30pm Skipper and Ray to sea in small boat- a very swell

evening

9:25 Louie sews on a button.

July 16th 8:00 AM- Polished off balance of egg supply.

Sea again continuing cruise around Santa Cruz Island.

11:50 AM- Fraser Pt. Abeam, under power

Noon-Set all sails, power off. Set Course to Santa Barbara

4:15 PM- Arrive Santa Barbara alongside Union Oil dock, took

on 31 gallons gas, water etc. Ray and Arthur uptown for

provisions. They return 7:30 with Bob Cornwall and PH

Madden.

8:30 PM- Dinner with Bob C. as guest

10:00 PM- Take Bing ashore for goodbye at station

July 17th 2:30 AM- Return aboard after milling around town.

Marie and Bill Walker, Werner Vonwiltenstein and Flora come

aboard.

3:30 AM Yankee goes to sea with escort of harbor night

watchman in launch- Under power.

to mooring

5:00 PM Ashore for Dinner with Ed and Bob, Said goodbye to

Ray.

7:00 PM- Ashore for a few drinks

July 19th, 2:30 AM- Shoved off for Painted Caves with Ed Gurley

and two passengers- Ed and Dick take wheel- Go into caves

again and explore coast line landing in small boat a few times.

3:00 PM Return Santa Barbara tied to mooring.

8:45 PM Cast off mooring and go to sea for return North- Crew-

AWF, GWF, Louie, Dick, Howard

9:00 PM Under Power

July 20th, 2:00 AM- Sighted Pt. Conception Lt. Starboard

5:00 AM- Can hear Pt. Arguello diaphone- very foggy

11:00AM San Louis Harbor- Tie up to Union Oil dock- 33 gallons

gas, checked over engine.

11:25 AM- Drifted around San Louis Harbor to eat

11:55 AM- Out to sea again

6:00 PM- Foggy-Under Power

7:00 PM- Hear Piedras Blancas-7:05- Piedras Abeam

July 21h- 5:00 AM Pt. Lobos Abeam Put up Jib

9:15 AM- Santa Cruz Buoy alongside, log over read distance by

one mile

Flotsam and Jetsam- News from the Crew!

3:45 AM Course for Potato Harbor, SC Island- Ray and Skip

scramble a dozen eggs. We eat egg, Louis at wheel, Geoff

and Ray remain on watch. Ray takes nap.

July 17th 7:45 AM- Enter Potato Harbor SC Island. Wake

Skipper.

7:47 AM- Yankee runs right up on a sandy beach- very lucky

smooth weather not much swell. Ray Louie, Geoff over

the side to shove off. Get off beach. Drop hook in 2

fathoms sandy bottom. Beer served to all hands. See AM

Bald eagle on cliff above us. Crew retire.

Noon- All hands take small boat on exploring trip.

4:00 PM- Return from interesting trip, many seals, colored

fish, eaves etc.

5:00 PM Dinner- Strong wind, strong surge running, let out

more scope-

5:30 PM Anchor chain parted- ALL HANDS!!!

Engine Started- Full speed ahead- missed going on rocks by

small margin-Finally get out of harbor towing small boat.

6:00 PM Big Wind and Sea- Small boat painter carried

away- Rolled both decks under picking up small boat.

6:30 PM Dropped spare anchor in lee of cliff in Scorpion

Bay. Shut off engine 7PM. Had shot of medical red to

quiet our nerves. All to bed. A very strenuous day

July 18th, 8:00 AM- Breakfast- Health regained

8:30 AM- Hook up under power to Potato Harbor where we

again anchor. Make up grappling hook and fish for lost

anchor from small boat. Finally hook last foot of broken

chain and after considerable horsing around get both hooks

aboard.

11:00 AM Under Power for Santa Barbara

2:30 PM Enter Santa Barbara Harbor- Alongside Union Oil

Dock. Dick Ford, Howard Cunningham sign on crew list at

this point.

4:00pm Ed Gurley and Bob Cornwall aboard and we go out

Below- Ford’s maiden voyage John and Samantha Collins welcomed a little boy Ford

Patton Collins on May 5th, 2010. He made his first

Yankee journey at only 8 weeks old and he loved it.

Jack Garrett (Grandson of Janet Ford, son of James and

Denise Garrett) earned his advanced scuba certification

on 11/23 and logged his 46th Dive!

Denise Garrett completed the San Diego Sharkfest swim

in September alongside her husband James and son Jack.

Bravo Garrett Family!

Rose Ellen O’Neal (Granddaughter of Vicki Ford Greeley)

completed the Tinsley Island Sailing camp earning the

award of “Most determined”

Way to go Rose!!!
