RTN presents the REINTJES Hybrid SystemRHS STANDS FOR

THE REINTJES HYBRID SYSTEM, ONE OF THE GREEN SOLUTIONS IN THE FIELD OF POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGY. IN COMBINATION WITH GAS-FUELED ENGINES, THIS “R” STANDS FOR REAL HYBRID SYSTEM JUST AS WELL AND MEANS ONE STEP FORWARD IN THE FIELD OF GREEN PROPULSION TECHNOLOGY.

After 30 years of experience in design and building gears which are ready for hybrid drive, we can summarize the following about the use of the REINTJES hybrid systems, combined with diesel-fueled engines: In most cases the le-vel of the exhausted emissions is not significantly reduced, the prognosed fuel consumption saving often cannot be reached and therefore the over-all-effi-ciency is still at a comparable level to a conventional propulsion system.For those reasons REINTJES considered it to be necessary to substantiate the customer’s value in case of using a hybrid system for his application. The con-sequently design as a “real hybrid”, means the combination of the RHS with gas-fueled engines, offers the following benefits:• Significant reducing of CO2, NOx, SOx emissions and health relevant parti-culates• Downsizing the main engine performance to avoid poor combustion• The main engine sized for free sailing condition only, without sea/safety mar-gin or bollard pull power

The solutionThe RHS, comprising the gearbox, the electric motor and the fre-quency converter, is suitable for various applications and availa-ble with electrical machines from 60 up to 630 kWe. In accordan-ce with the customer’s individual requirements the REINTJES team of powertrain specialists provides the most suitable system solu-tion for your application. All components of the system are optimal-ly adjusted to each other and the functionalities in the gearbox de-sign enable an easy connecting to the propeller.The compact REINTJES Hybrid System (RHS) allows easy switching between the following different operation modes by means of its hydraulically operated clutches:• Diesel mode: Diesel engine for propulsion only • PTI mode: Electric motor for propulsion only • PTO mode: Diesel engine for propulsion and shaft generation • Boost mode: Electric motor and diesel engine in combination

• Dynamic Positioning mode: One diesel engine for propulsion onlyWith conventional diesel driven propulsion systems low engine speeds would result in poor combustion in the main engines, higher fuel consumption and more emissions, and increase of wear and te-ar of the main engine. With its Hybrid System REINTJES provides an exceptional solution in the field of emission-free drive technology which combines low noise and low vibrations.As with all other REINTJES products, the service for hybrid drives is available 24/7 all year round.

The reference: Benetti Trideck “My Paradise”The first of the Benetti 108’ models was built to carry auxiliary die-sel- electric drives coupled to the main diesel engines. Azimut Be-netti Group’s R&D team drew up the project work in collaboration with RTN.Main engines are 2×1.000 Cv (735 kW) Man V8 • Genset 2x 80 kW • max speed with diesel engine 15kt • cruise speed 13,5kt • Com-pliance with Large Yacht Code (LY2).Thanks to the hydrodynamic characteristics of displacing yachts of this size with only 8% of the main diesel engines’ power it is pos-sible to reach about 40% of max speed using the auxiliary diesel-electric system made up of 2x 35 KW electric motors feeded by the on board gen.set. With this set up a maximum of 6 knots can be obtained, in total comfort in comparison to the 15 knots that can be reached by deploying the 735kW of diesel engines alone. Benetti 108 Trideck My Paradise – electric auxiliary propulsion was reali-zed by installing a pair of modified Reintjes WAF 344 so as to obtain two gates for incoming power, one for the diesel engines and a se-condary PTI (Power Take In) one by which to connect an electric auxiliary to. This is the RHS Reintjes Hybrid System that was inte-grated with added special harmonic filters and automation logic by RTN to make a perfect integration with the vessel.RTN made a verification through simulation program to verify the harmonic distortion generated from the frequency converter; in fact it is a matter every time there is a frequency converter with a po-wer near to the genset one. IN this case we had 2x 35kW inverters and 2x 80kW genset and it was not possible to let the system pro-perly work without a dedicated system to reduce the negative ef-fects of harmonics. The filters were customized according to this application and the result was excellent and the total harmonic di-stortion was confirmed below 5%. RTN delivered also a PLC based automation system and the lever remote control system to integrate the hybrid system with the on board automation with some dedica-ted pages on the main bridge consolle. It was not needed to add any other screen or control lever because the same interfaces are used by electric and diesel engines and the switch is managed comple-tely automatic; the captain has just to select the desired operating mode diesel or electric comfort. The system is extremely simple to operate for the captain thanks to the integrated logic that manage the operating modes from diesel to electric and vice-versa. All the settings were done during the sea trials and no other maintenance action is required during the life of the system a part the standard issues for the mechanical moving parts.
