3 How to reach the University Check-in at open day 3
Welcome to our Open Day
We are delighted to welcome you to our Edgbaston campus and we hope you have a fantastic day with us today. There are lots of activities and talks for you to soak up so please do take advantage of everything that we have on offer. There are various opportunities to speak to our current students throughout the day. Ask for their honest opinions on what life is like at Birmingham, and find out all about their course as well as the things they do outside of their programme too. Your life at university isn’t just about study and work and whilst your degree is at the heart of your time here, the relationships you build will last you a lifetime, and the opportunities are vast. With over 300 societies and clubs at Birmingham, from baking to skydiving, you can build on your existing passion or may want to try something brand new. Speak to our students to find out more, and you may want to attend one of our Student Life talks too. There is also the opportunity to visit a range of our accommodation villages and to see
what different types of accommodation you can live in during your first year at Birmingham, and you will want to visit the department of the subject that you’re interested in. For a full list of talks and activities for your subject, see the subject timetables (starting on page 13). You may also want to take the time to explore the city of Birmingham, and there is a student-led bus tour of the city that leaves from outside the Barber Institute of Fine Arts at 11.00am, 1.00pm and 3.00pm.
University is your next step on the road to independence and with at least three years ahead of you, it’s important that you choose a place that you can call home. University is a time for self-discovery and adventure, to shape your own experience and discover who you are. Today is just the start of your journey and we hope you enjoy your open day.
STUDENT SUPPORT AND WELLBEINGHere at the University of Birmingham, we are committed to ensuring that whoever you are and wherever you come from, you have all of the support you need to make the most of your time at university. The University has a comprehensive network of support mechanisms to provide personalised support to students who need it. For many students, the move to university study is a big transition but you can be reassured that right across campus support and help is available if you need it. We have a large and diverse community at Birmingham and we are experienced in dealing with students from all backgrounds. In the Bramall Rotunda today, you will find specialists from a range of areas including Equality, Diversity and Wellbeing; Student Disability Services; Funding and Awards; and Security Services. All of our staff will be happy to talk to you informally about your particular needs and how we can support you, and if you would prefer to talk to someone in private then that opportunity is also available. Feel free to speak to any of our staff for further information.

Check-in at open day 5
We are in the midst of one of the most exciting and transformational campus redevelopments since 1909. In the last two years we have opened a state-of-the-art library, stunning student accommodation and a world-class sports club.
Visit our outstanding new library today at the centre of campus, which has been designed for learning in the 21st century and beyond. The technology-rich facility caters for different styles of study enhanced by innovative features such as wireless charging, media rooms and video editing booths. Our sports club is also open for you to explore. University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness boasts a 50m swimming pool, a large multi-sports arena, six glass-backed squash courts, a 10m climbing wall, five activity studios and a Performance Centre.
We have even more developments in the pipeline, some of which you will benefit from the minute you start as a University of Birmingham student. We are continually improving the availability
of high-end student accommodation across campus. Already we have unveiled the new Chamberlain hall of residence and opened our Bournbrook residence. With 178 rooms, the residence boasts en-suite rooms, a café, accommodation centre and sports pavilion. Last Autumn Term saw the opening of the Collaborative Teaching Laboratory which will revolutionise the way STEM subjects are taught.
We recently opened a striking new 12-acre parkland which has transformed the heart of the campus; the Green Heart. A new Teaching and Learning Building is being created beside the Main Library, which will provide state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including seminar rooms, lecture theatres and a variety of areas for students to use. This will open in early 2020. A new building for the School of Engineering is also in development, ready to provide a purpose-built creative learning environment for engineering students from September 2020.
THE UNIVERSITY IS INVESTING IN NEW FACILITIES FOR STUDENTS AND RESEARCHERS. IN THE PAST YEAR WE HAVE OPENED A BRAND NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART LIBRARY, STUDENT HUB AT THE HEART OF CAMPUS IN OUR ICONIC ASTON WEBB BUILDING, NEW ACCOMMODATION, AND AN INSTITUTE OF TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE.
Campus developmentsInformation for parents and carers
Welcome to our open day and we hope you find the day useful. All of the talks and information available today will help your son/daughter to make an informed choice about their future, and there are some activities and talks that we think you may also find particularly helpful. If you want to learn more about the wider picture at the University of Birmingham, why not attend one of our ‘Welcome to Birmingham’ talks with our Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) at 9.00am or 9.45am in the Great Hall?
Accommodation talks and Student Funding talks take place throughout the day, and there is also the opportunity to visit a number of our accommodation villages. Coaches leave from outside the Barber Institute of Fine Arts should you wish to visit the Vale Village, or you may want to walk using the map on the back page of this programme. Speak to any of our student ambassadors or staff to find out more.
The University is also home to a number of cultural attractions that you may like to see. If you have some downtime during the day, you may want to visit Winterbourne House and Garden, one of the city’s premier suburban gardens; the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, housed in one of Birmingham’s finest Art Deco buildings; or even the Lapworth Museum of Geology (especially if you have smaller children with you – it will keep them busy!). The city of Birmingham has also been revitalised during the last two decades and if you haven’t been for a while, then we think you’ll be surprised at how much has changed. If you have time after the open day or during, then we really recommend a visit to the city centre – just seven minutes away from the University via train.
Whatever you do today, soak up everything that campus has to offer and ask as many questions as you like. Our staff and students are here to help so please do not hesitate to ask anything throughout your visit.
