AFL Vic CountrySt Joseph’s claims Herald Sun ShieldGeelong’s St Joseph’s College has claimed the 2016 Division One Boys Herald Sun Shield over St Patrick’s College in a thriller at the MCG on Saturday afternoon.

Leading at every break, St Joseph’s’ hope of securing its second Herald Sun Shield title was in the hands of St Patrick’s, which had a kick after the siren to decide the champion.

Down by a point in the dying seconds of the match, St Patrick’s marked the ball inside 50 and lined up for a shot on goal to win the match and secure the school’s seventh consecutive Herald Sun Shield.

Unfortunately the fairy-tale nish was not to be for the St Patrick’s faithful, with the kick going out on the full to hand St Joseph’s its second Herald Sun Shield title in a decade.

Progressing through to the Grand Final after convincing semi-nal performances, the battle for the Division One title was always going to be a close one.

Running out onto the game’s biggest stage, St Joseph’s applied scoreboard pressure early with multiple inside-50 entries. Yet despite having eight scoring shots to three, the scoreboard was even at quarter time on 13 points apiece.

Accuracy in front of goal continued to plague the boys from Geelong in the second term, piling on 4.6 to open up a 17-point lead at the main break.

With the game in the balance, the reigning premiers stepped it up a gear in the second half to wrestle momentum back in Ballarat’s favour. St Patrick’s’ ball use and eciency in front of the big sticks proved fruitful in the third and nal terms, but it was too little too late. The nal score was 7.17 (59) to 8.10 (58).

St Joseph’s coach Chris Lynch said he was proud of his team for keeping to its structures and playing their brand of football until the very end.

“It was a pretty tense last quarter, that’s for sure,” Lynch said. “Our poor kicking kept St Patrick’s in the match and when they started to come back in the second half of the game they nearly took home the title, but we dug deep to ght it out.

“We felt we deserved to win the match and we were just really proud of the team to hold on and win the game. We set a goal at the start of the year to play a brand of football which would see us play on the MCG at the end of the year, so the fact that we were able to do that and get the win was extremely satisfying.”

Attention now turns to the Division One Girls Herald Sun Shield battle between reigning premier Methodist Ladies College and Ballarat Grammar.

With both schools tasting victory just once before, the pair will be hoping to become the equal-best girls’ school in the competition’s history when they meet in the decider later this month.

Football PreviewBULLDOGS FINISHING HARDBy Simon McEvoyMORNINGTON will look to continue to its excellent late-season form when it hosts nals aspirant EDI-ASP.The Bulldogs have beaten two sides above it on the ladder - Seaford and Pines – in the past three weeks, and they could add another scalp today.Mornington coach Chris Holcombe says his young side has taken strides forward in recent weeks.“I’m rapt with their attitude,’’ he said.“They could have thrown the towel in…but we’ve tried to develop all the young kids and they are really starting to click. They are coming on well and playing some good footy. It’s really encouraging for next year.’’Mornington’s 17-point win over third-placed Pines last week was a beauty, with Ryan Odell, Mick Gay, Lachlan Hewitt and Jai Haddock showing the way.Edi-Asp, fth, has got the wobbles of late, losing two in a row and will be keen to steady the ship and set sail for nals.A third successive win awaits SEAFORD today when the in-form Tigers host KARINGAL. A stirring win over Edi-Asp last week kept Seaford in nals contention, although coach Ben Murphy says his side’s main goal is simply to nish the season strongly. “We just need to make sure we nish o the year well,’’ Murphy said.“It’s been a big year of improvement.’’Youngsters Matt Herbert, Curtis Murfett and Jackson Mockett were terric in the Tigers’ gritty win last week while Aaron Turner, Brendan Dawes and Josh Stokes have also been in ne form.Nothing – literally, nothing – separated Seaford and Karingal back in Round 4, with the sides playing out the only draw of the season. Karingal surged from 26 points down with nine minutes to go to force a draw with Seaford, a snap from Callan Dixon with about 15 seconds to go knotting the scores at 71.Karingal is coming o a tough past ve weeks in which it has faced four of the top ve teams. The Bulls have taken strides forward this season and will be keen to nish o strongly.

LANGWARRIN will be keen to put a three-game gap between itself and bottom side CHELSEA when the sides face o at Lloyd Park.Wins have been scarce for both the Kangaroos and the Seagulls, although Langy did beat third-placed Pines only a fortnight ago.Back on its home turf, Langwarrin will look to attack today, with Nick Hammill, Blake Harkness and Shane Paterson to provide the spark. Youngster Bayleigh Tate made an impressive senior debut last week and Andy Johnson provided a strong presence down back.Chelsea beat Langy by 45 points earlier in the season on the back of a rollicking seven-goal second quarter. But the Seagulls have battled since, although the recent eorts of Mark Baxter, Daniel Knowles, Ben Graham and Ben Holman have been good.BONBEACH has fond memories of its last meeting with MT ELIZA back in Round 5. It was a turning point in the Sharks’ season. Bonny was 0-4 when it went to Mt Eliza on that May day, and, with rumours that Mt Eliza may have rested some players, Bonbeach took the eld red up and demanding respect. In a lively start, the Sharks rushed to a 24-1 lead at quarter time and then kicked six goals into the breeze in a decisive second quarter to set up a 21-point victory. Since, Bonbeach have won eight of 10 games. As nals approach, these two sides are rated as genuine ag contenders. With every chance they could meet again in the nals, today’s game will be important, a chance for one side to gain a psychological advantage. It could come in handy next month. For Bonbeach, Jackson Casey, Beau Bailey and Justin Bennett have been in sparkling form, while Luke Damon continues to kick goals.Mt Eliza’s young forward Jordan Capkin is destined to play at a higher level certainly his stocks have soared in recent times. His eight-goal haul last week underlined his star power. Other Redlegs are ying, the likes of James Anwyl, Ben Landry, Matt Davis and Rohan Heasley. At John Coburn Oval, FRANKSTON YCW meets PINES in a top-versus-third battle.

Both these sides have lost key players to long-term injuries in recent weeks and these last few weeks before nals will be important as they search for team chemistry. The Stonecats returned to their high-scoring ways last week, kicking 15 goals to beat Karingal. Paul Minchington is having a cracking season, while Anthony Bruhn, Kyle Hutchison and Jai Coghlan will look to inspire YC. Pines has lost three of its past four games but coach Paddy Swayn remain condent his side can get it all together when crunch time comes. With Tim Bongetti being out with an ankle injury, Aaron Edwards and Guy Hendry will have to shoulder more responsibility up forward, while Chris Guganovic, Adam Marriner and Luke Potts also loom as key men.SHARKS SEEK REVENGEIN THE RESERVES…BONBEACH will seek revenge when it faces MT ELIZA in the top-of-the-table clash. Back in Round 5, the Redlegs jumped the Sharks in the rst quarter to set up a 28-point win. Today, Bonny will look to start better and put pressure on Mt Eliza. FRANKSTON YCW is chasing its fourth win in a row when it hosts PINES. A win today would also help the Stonecats (11-4) cement third spot. Big Chappy continues to kick goals, while Mitch Barker and Lucas Lee are in good form.LANGWARRIN will be keen to bounce back to winning form when it tackles CHELSEA. The Kangas were kept to only three goals last week but is still a chance for a top-three spot.MORNINGTON cracked its duck egg last week and is a chance to make it two on the spin today against an out-

of-form EDI-ASP. The Bulldogs surged to an early lead and refused to buckle last week, with Sam Wright, Lachlan Sweetnam, Jack Riley and Jack Dickson in sparkling form.Finals-bound SEAFORD takes a three-game winning streak into its game against KARINGAL. The Tigers are up and about, with Shorty Walker, Cameron Newbold and Cruze Tohiariki in leading the way.BULLS CHARGINGIN THE UNDER 19s…Full of momentum, KARINGAL takes a ve-game winning streak into the big clash with second-placed SEAFORD. The Bulls have cemented a top-ve spot on the back of quality, team footy. Jonah Cassera, Brendan Lord and Travis Puntaroni are in cracking form.Ladder leaders MT ELIZA will be keen to rediscover its best form when it meets BONBEACH after losing two of its past three games. The in-form Oscar Whitty will again look to spark the Redlegs.CHELSEA roared back to winning form last week as Andrew Vitzdamm-Jones, Jesse Davies, Vincent Kovacic and co. ran riot. With a spring in their step, the Seagulls tackle an in-form LANGWARRIN side that is playing itself into ag contention.EDI-ASP is coming o one of its best wins of the season when it goes to MORNINGTON. The Eagles showed plenty of character to upset ag hopefuls Seaford last week, with Zach Barrett, Zach Fatouros and Matt Moloney showing the way. Likewise, Mornington returned to winning form last week.FRANKSTON YCW will look to boost its percentage when it tackles PINES.

Club NotesFrankston YCW StoneCatsBack to the Coburn Oval for the penultimate time this season, we welcome the Pines Football and Netball teams. We enter the last three rounds of the season and wins become critical as we jockey for ladder positions and percentage. Mind you there’s no sign of that nals weather yet!Last week we lobbed to a windswept Bull Pit with a few changes cascading across the three footy sides. The Numero’s continued their improved form knocking over a committed Karingal outt particularly in the second half. Mincho appeared to be everywhere whilst Skipper Jie and Lachy got plenty of contested aggot. Kyle, Widdow and Bruhny attacked the ball up forward in an overall improved eort. In a danger game, the Magoos stormed out of the Sheds and won well in a consistent performance - the victory soured a little by an injury to Captain Cowled. Mitch B was best, backed up by Jake Cheverley, Theoby and Lucas Lee. The Unders started slowly and chased some charging Bulls all day going down by six large. Ben Crackers was best and got some support from Marco, Jack M and Streety. The boys need to knuckle down for the last three encounters and try to snae a vital double chance possie The Stonekittens lost 3 out of 4 to the Bullettes - read their notes in the Nettie sectionOur end of season Big Bash is on Saturday September 24 - AFL Preliminary Final day. There will be a 4 course luncheon and drink package from 12 Noon to 3.30pm. Guest MC, Brendan Fevola as Guest Speaker plus much more.

Langwarrin KangaroosWelcome all back to Lloyd park as we take on Chelsea. Its sure to be a great day of footy, combined with the best burgers on the Peninsula. All supporters are welcome back to the clubrooms after the game.Last week in conditions that most there agreed were blustery we took on the Mounties , and came away with the one win in the u/19’s. We led at every change in the game ,and in a high standard match from both sides it was pleasing to see our boys win. Particularly impressive was the pace with which we moved the ball ,and our ability to team well together and take the correct options when the pressure was on. Besty with 3 goals and Sam Schaede , Lachy Bayley and Dylan Corcoran were among our better players. With nals around the corner it was good to have the win. This was the one win we had for the day with both our reserves and seniors nding it tough up against some great Mt Eliza play. We got away to a good start in the seniors but were not able to continue that form for the remaining 3 quarters, against a very tough , skillful opponent . The reserves in a low scoring match were down by only a goal at 3/4 time, but were over run in the nal term. Good play in the seniors from Andy Johnson, Shane , Siz and Nick. The reserves were well served by Longley , Bice , Wilcox and Ulbrick.Social Notes : Get your ticket(s) for the $5k draw , and tickets are selling quick for the Grand Final breakfast.

Club NotesSeaford Tigers10K DRAW TONIGHT AT THE CLUBROOMS, KICKING OFF AT 7:30pm, TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED BEHIND THE BAR AFTER THE GAMELast week we travelled out to Edithvale in what was a crucial day for the club in all grades. With a strong breeze favouring one end it was one of those days that saw leads change regularly. The 19s were looking to continue their winning streak but found themselves in a dog ght from the start. With a 6 point lead at the main break we had a good 3rd against the breeze, only trailing by 4 points at 3/4 time. However 1.7 in the last quarter cost us the match and top spot on the ladder as the boys went down by 3 points. Bryce Lloyd was dominant up forward with 4 goals and Lachie Mullin was BOG. With a tight top 5 it is crucial we win our last 2 games to secure a 2nd chance in the nals. The Reserves also continued our great recent form with a 50 point win after a tight battle in the 1st half. Spence kicked 4 last quarter goals, Shorty was inspirational all day yet again, Newy had the ball on a string, Cruze looked dangerous all day, Pauly V was solid down back and Courts worked his guts out across half forward. Today is a massive game for the boys with a win securing a nals birth. The Seniors has a must win game to keep our nals hopes alive and it was an epic. After a tight 1st half we kicked clear by 27 points in the 3rd, kicking with the breeze, before Edithvale mounted a spirited comeback, kicking the next 6 goals to take a 10 point lead half way through the last. All looked lost but we somehow found another gear, slamming 3 goals in a row against the strong wind before clinging on to a 2 point win in what was one of our greatest wins in years. Matty Herbert was great all day, Jackson Mockett led from the front with 4 goals. Another ‘elimination nal’ confronts us today, after a draw in the rst encounter with the Bulls this should also go down to the wire.

Pines PythonsFirstly congrats to u on his stingrays debut and aquitted himself well with a couple of goals. Secondly well done to Little Corny and Pav with their sides in the nals, Well done and all the best.19s fought hard until numbers showed out again. Best players were Liam, Little Barrel, Rhys and Goldy. Finish the season o strong boys. Doc’s men had a win on the agenda but silly mistakes cost again. Keep playing to the plan and improvement is showing. Best were Mexico, Bails, D Mac and a Angry Nudgey.Seniors were outpointed again but live to keep building for nals, better players were Brad Kiely, Ashy, Taz and Azza. Socially tickets for draw due back, luncheon on Chelsea game see trav for details. Presentation Night Thursday before AFL grand nal. KICKITOME

Mornington BulldogsWhat a great weekend for the club with three wins for the rst time all year! An under manned under 19’s Pines team greeted us Saturday for what ended up being a solid hit out for our boys. Pines tried hard all day however their lack of numbers allowed us to run and move the ball reasonably cleanly. The reserves got their rst win for the year leading from start to nish. A great reward for the blokes who have stuck at it all year and continued to work on their footy despite the lack of results going their way. Wrighty led from the front, Lachy kicked 3 in another great game, Jack Riley found plenty of it whilst it was good to have Sloppy Dickson back on the park after what a bad run with injuries. The seniors played four quarters of quality footy to show that they are good enough to match it with the best sides in the competition. Kicking into the wind in the rst quarter they stuck with Pines and ve goals to none with the wind in the second term gave them a 24 point lead at half time. They continued on strongly in the second half and when Pines got close they continued to step up and ended up winning by 17 points. Jacko and Dale kicked 3, Micky Gay was dominant in the ruck whilst Halsall, Odell and Hewitt continue to show what talent we have coming through.Another big ask this weekend however lets make it another 3 wins for the club!

Karingal BullsToday we take on Seaford at the postage stamp in a day of must win games. Last time we met the senior game ended in a thrilling draw at BMK Oval while the reserves and unders lost. Since then both have had a resurgence and must win today to keep on track for September action while the ones will be looking to spoil Seaford’s tilt at a nals berth.Last week v YCW was a had day out for both senior teams but a very good win by the U19sBest of luck to our junior teams kicking o their nals campaigns tomorrow and special mention to both U15 and U17 teams who made it through the season undefeatedMajor Fundraiser – karingalrae.com.au for tix (only $50) or see players/committee to WIN either a Jeep, Jayco or Jetski thanks to Bayside Jeep, Jayco Australia and JV Marine WorldSeafood lunch and LAST home game in the old rooms next Sat - see Wally to book your ticketPremium partners of the Bulls this year are Frankston RSL, BMK, Bank of Queensland, Peninsula Sports Medicine, Construct Homes, Hallam Truck Centre, RAMS, Priority Printing Solutions, Crownbet and Bluegum – PLEASE support these businesses whenever you can as they support us

Chelsea SeagullsFirstly, a big cheer for Stevie G who coached his 200th game for the Club last week, his contribution to CFC over a long period has been enormous. Great start last Saturday with the 19’s having a really strong win against Bonnie, could have been better had they kicked straight. Well done to Vince, Jess, Niko, Andrew V-J & Lex, really good signs here for next season. The 2’s tried hard again but were just undermanned in the end. Niz, Bryn, Big Stu and Lukey Pickett all tried hard, have to give a big tick to Drilla for a great job down back, this kid is a player of the future no doubt. In the main event unfortunately we were just beaten by a better side, the Coach was really disappointed in the eort and had every right to be. No doubt we have had a tu run of late but that performance just wasn’t up to scratch. Well done to young Kingy and Charles R’O both making their Senior debut for the Club. 3 games to go and the future is still bright so please let’s all make the eort to keep turning up.See you at the Gullery !!

Bonbeach SharksToday is Past Players Day- a time to catch up with old mates and reminisce about the good ol’ days. Let’s make sure we all put on a good show for our past legends.Congratulations to Bonbeach’s favourite son and club co-captain Jackson Casey on playing his 150th senior game last week. This is a fantastic achievement and at 24 years of age, puts him well on track to play 300.This week we have another special occasion. Shane McDonald, arguably Bonbeach’s greatest ever player will pull on the boots for game 200. We also congratulate him.To last week’s action…Both the Seniors and Reserves had convincing wins. The Seniors recorded a 90 point win to put them in outright 4th on the ladder. Bonbeach youngsters Jackson Casey, Beau Bailey and Justin Bennett all played well with big Owen Hulett booting 3 goals. It was a similar story in the Reserves as we won by 53 points. Our forward line was superb with Dale Donkin kicking 4 and Robbie Lancaster 3.Our u19s faced a disappointing loss against local rivals Chelsea. With some key players missing either to injury or promotion to the senior team, our boys were always on the back foot. This, accompanied with falling numbers at training was never going to prepare us well. Nonetheless, the 25 point loss did have some positives with ‘Big Dog’ using his super power hip-and-shoulder to command respect and Andy Cochrane cleaning up a Seagull. Mt Eliza Red LegsToday we congratulate Sam Wettenhall on his 150th (And Life Membership) Game for the MEFNC.“Wetters” is yet another former Junior to progress through the ranks, making his Senior debut in 2007. Today is just his 2nd game back after a knee reco almost 12 months to the day.Last week saw the Seniors & Reserves come away with solid wins v Langy whilst the U/19’s went down. The 19’s didn’t start well and were playing catch up for the rest of the game, losing to a well drilled team by 17.The two Oscar’s - Whitty & Craig tried hard, along with Max Rea & Ricey.Need to bounce back today boys! The Reserves again held their opponents goalless in the rst half before Langy fought hard in the 3rd to get back into it. A great last term saw us kick 6 goals with Wetters kicking a couple to sew up the game.Best were Ricey (3), Trumpy, Vanin, Mitch Anwyl, Whits & The Clamp. The Seniors trailed by 7 points at qtr time but then kept Langy to 1 more goal for the game.Jordan Capkin was great with his 8 goals & Gilly 3.Other best players were Anwyl, Lombo, Heasa, Davo & Lang.Congrats to Nick McKinnon on his Senior debut!Social: Tomorrow $10k Draw from midday - Presidents Lunch Sat 20th Aug (Rd 18 v Seaford) $35 per head. Stingrays“JETS NO MATCH FOR POISONOUS STINGRAYS”ROUND 15 MATCH REPORT - BY MITCH BROWNThe Dandenong Southern Stingrays endured swirling winds and a host of injuries to come home with a com-fortable 62-point win over the Western Jets on Saturday, 17.17 (119) to 8.9 (57).The Stingrays were menacing from the get-go and, save for a couple of momentary lapses in the second quarter, controlled the match all day, never allowing the Jets to get a sni.Dandenong benetted from a wide spread of goalkick-ers, with Tom Jok, Sam Fowler, Tom Murphy, Chad Harris and rst-gamer Jacob Boyle all managing a pair of majors each, with seven other Stingrays also slotting goals.Fowler and Harris were the pick of the forwards, with both applying signicant pressure across the half-for-wards to force the Western defence into making errors. Tom Murphy also had a great day out, playing as the pri-mary lead-up key forward and clearly relishing the op-portunity.Through the middle, Myles Poholke showed o more of the terric form that this week earned him an invite to the NAB AFL draft combine, with brilliant support from the likes of Nathan Scagliarini, Lachlan Gill-Renouf and Tommy Glen.Down back, however, was where the Stingrays really shone. Hunter Clark gave his best performance of the year across the back anks, while Matthew LaFontaine’s move into defence continued to be one of the master-strokes of the year. And after a best-on-ground perfor-mance last week, Mason DeWit would have undoubtedly put his hand up for back-to-back honours with another gritty performance from centre half-back.The only negative from the day is the toll it may have had on a couple of its key players. Tom DeKoning sustained a thumb injury in the third term, did not return to the eld and was sent to have scans.Hunter Clark was also managed throughout the nal stages of the game as a precaution after some soreness late in the match. But injury aside, stand-in coach Nathan Harris (who this week took the reigns to further develop his coaching skills) was pleased with the nal result.“In tricky conditions, like today with the wind blowing to one end, it was always going to be a challenge.“The Jets came at us, particularly in the second quarter. And so it was good to see how they responded – our sec-ond half, I thought, was fantastic.“We outscored them and we outworked them.”That was the theme for most of the day – the Rays burst out of the blocks early, with a 7-goal rst quarter to set the tone of the day.The Jets were made to look second-rate as the Stingrays swarmed the footy and benetted from cleaner disposal and better decision-making.

Debutant Jacob Boyle won’t forget the rst term for a while, booting his rst TAC Cup goal with his rst TAC Cup kick – even the Rays’ defenders scurried down to the forward line to rue his hair in congratulations. But to their credit, the Jets refused to give in. A majority of the second quarter was played on their terms, while a couple of the Stingrays could have been accused of tak-ing their foot o the accelerator marginally. That couldn’t be said about Dylan Atkins or Luke Paynter, however – both were escorted from the eld with blood pouring from their noses after hard attacks on the footy. It was eorts like those that ensured a 27-point lead at the main break. After half-time, the Stingrays lifted their game up an-other gear, leaving the Jets in their wake. Western simply couldn’t keep up with the ferocious Rays, who gave their opponents no mercy.By the time the nal siren rang, Dandenong had kicked away to a 62-point win – another timely reminder that the Stingrays are the genuine 2016 premiership threat. They will now enjoy a week o for a TAC Cup general bye, with the penultimate game of their home-and-away sea-son against the Murray Bushrangers on Saturday August 13 from Shepley Oval at 2pm.“These next two games are really important for us, for our nals preparation,” Harris admitted.“The wheels are in motion, we’ve been training hard, the boys have been doing their conditioning work, so we know that they’re going to run out games really well come nals time.”Dandenong Stingrays 7.5-47 9.8-62 13.15-93 17.17-119Western Jets 1.2-8 5.6-36 6.8-44 8.9-57Goal Kickers: Tom Murphy 2, Jacob Boyle 2, Sam Fowler 2, Chad Harris 2, Tom Jok 2, Tom Glen, Max Kleverkamp, Nathan Scagliarini, Hunter Clark, Kirk Dickson, Myles Po-holke, Dylan AtkinsBest Players: Mason DeWit, Hunter Clark, Chad Harris, Sam Fowler, Matthew La Fontaine, Myles Poholke

We Have Skills…Allegedly…Skills – something a lot of people claim to have but are clearly mistaken. Dierent between normal people and umpires – there is at least a remote possibility that a normal person has a skill. Umpires have absolutely no chance. Yes, please note that we are not including umpires in the realm of normal people.Well at least that’s what we all thought. But delve a little deeper and you’ll realise that eld umpires at least have one skill. Just one, but at least it’s one. Ask an umpire to bounce next time you decide to be charitable and chin wag with one. Even if it going 15 me-tres to their left and only one foot o the ground it still classies as a bounce and therefore…the umpire has a skill. The Bounce was introduced to league football all the way back in 1887. Initially just to start each quarter it only took 4 short years for eld umpires to be smacking the ball into the turf at every opportunity. And with a much poorer quality of grounds at the time they’d make spe-cialists in today’s game. An absolute bucket load of things then happened in the following 122 years; Coca-Cola produced its rst bottle, the rst modern Olympic Games in Athens, the Common-wealth of Australia was created (long overdue), Mr Booth invented the vacuum cleaner resulting in more reports of missing marbles than ever before, Crayola introduced crayons (at the cost of white walls all the world over), Hitler suered little man syndrome, a couple of guys took a quick holiday to the moon, the Wiggles succeeded in their attempt for World rule and a few other things oc-curred that are too deep for article. But all the while eld umpires continued to totter over to a pack, kindly re-quest access to the football and slam the footy into the deck hoping for just enough height to clear the hands of the 145cm ruckman who were enjoying a quiet chinwag while the poor umpire was looking down.122 years is a damn long time for the system to stay the same (unfortunately football reverted back to its original setup in 2013 and umpires only had 4 opportunities a game to show o their real skill). These days a rule strug-gles to last 12 months before someone nds an issue. Of course there’s been some changes in technique. Think back to the 1920s and 30s when the silly bugger would swing the ball single-handedly into the turf reminiscent of a Shaun Tait re bolt. Later on they even squatted and punched the ball into the ground. Naturally it didn’t work at all. Must’ve been wearing iron sts too.One day the bounce may be no more. And then we’ll evoke memories of the days when an umpire would break their own nose or send our oddly shaped ball into

oblivion hoping not to send it through the goals and bounce the winning score. But most of all, we’ll remem-ber the times when there was a lighter side to umpiring and the thing that allowed us our genuine 10 seconds of fame.Long live the bounce…SUA Mini OlympicsWith the Rio Olympics just around the corner and the facilities still struggling, sporting ocials could consider an eleventh hour adjustment to schedule and bring the 2016 Olympics down to the pristine facilities of Carlisle Park in Cranbourne North. Why you may ask would such a ludicrous idea be suggested by such intelligent soles? Well…Carlisle Park is the site of what many consider to be the “real” 2016 Olympics anyway…the SUA Mini Olym-pics. Pitting the Seaford crew against those extra from Foun-tain Gate, there promises to be high levels of intensity and passion as the two bases play o for the bragging rights and the trophy of Inaugural SUA Mini Olympic Champions. On Monday August 8th (this week) at 6pm get down to Carlisle Park in Cranbourne North to test the mettle of your training base and discipline group and prove once and for all who reigns supreme.Seaford or Fountain Gate? Fountain Gate or Seaford? Who will win? Disclaimer: The writer of this article does not apologise to any Fountain Gate umpire who leaves the venue in tears of despair once Seaford clinch an outright domi-nant victory.Stay in Touch Stay in touch with all information about Southern Um-pires Association (SUA) by following or adding us on social media. Bonbeach V Mt ElizaBonbeach had their second win of the season last round against Chelsea in a thriller! Mt Eliza took care of Langwarrin by 12 goals. This match will be played at Shark Park today. Mt Eliza’s performances have been

inconsistent this year due to injury but as the only team to have beaten Edi Asp in an A grade Peninsula FNL grand nal – we know what they are capable of! Frankston YCW V PinesFrankston YCW came up against Karingal last week at the Bullpit and couldn’t come away with a win. Pines on the other hand won proving the competition is becoming even, defeating nals hopefuls Mornington by 5 goals. This week will be another test for the Pythons against 5th placed YC. The Stonekittens are denitely a nals chance but the Pythons have a point to prove. Who will win this one? Langwarrin V ChelseaLangwarrin lost last week to Mt Eliza in a close one. Chelsea handed the Sharks their second win of the season by one goal in a victory that most probably should have been theirs! Chelsea now nd themselves at the bottom of the ladder. Langwarrin are 7th and not in nals contention but should win this match easily.

Mornington V Edi AspThis game is match of the round! Mornington suered a shock loss last week against on the up Pines and are clinging to their nals hopes. They are sitting in eighth spot. Edi Asp were scheduled to meet Seaford. season and are sitting in third spot on the ladder. The Doggies are denitely up to the challenge of nals netball – the small hurdle of the Eagles this week must be overcome before though. Can they redeem the loss of last week? Seaford V KaringalKaringal took a win last week at home against Frankston YCW while Seaford will meet ladder leaders Edi Asp during the week. Karingal seem to ring on all cylinders currently and when at full strength play excellent netball. Seaford recruited well in the o season and are sitting in third position and could really push the Bulls this week in a battle for the double chance.

Frankston YCW StoneKittensA tough day on the courts for YCW this week, taking on the Bulls. A grade was terric. All over the court, the girls gave everything in a very physical game.Whilst the girls lost, we were able to see their eort down the whole court. Everyone did the best they could. Jessica Tobin was best on this week for being an exemplary example. B grade came out with a strong win. There was some brilliant netball and our traction down the court as much smoother. Emma Barfuss was best on this week for making a massive dierence in the goal circle. C grade again suered a loss. The girls went out ring hard and played with maturity and determination. it was great to watch. Every girl pushed to chase down Karingal. Jesslyn Credlin was our best on with her immense pressure and intercepts. These were a game changer. D grade had a disapointing loss, however it was not ue to determination and eort. Unfortunately Karingal’s shooting accuracy kept them in front. The girls fought super hard in the last half to peg the Karingal lead back. Elise Catterick was best on with her versatility and giving it her all. Her defensive pressure in the attack end was amazing.

Mt Eliza Red LegsAfter a tough 3 weeks against quality top 4 opposition the Mounties were out to show that we can bounce back & are up there with the best. D GRADE started with a strong 19 goal win & were back to the team we have all come to know. Krystal played a fantastic game in goals while Bec L & Holly were hitting the circle like pros. C GRADE had a tough ght on their hands, shattered by injury & severely undermanned they did their best but just could not pull together for the entire match. Marcie was excellent in goals & Kate P should be commended for her eort in centre. Final score was 56-38 in favour of Langwarrin. B GRADE were ready to roll from the rst whistle & were determined to win the match. Their eort & team work was outstanding & every player played their role in ne form. Karen C was great in the mid court while Peta was dynamic in defence with lots of tips & intercepts. B grade ended up while a good win 45 - 39. A GRADE looked set for a good win as soon as they stepped on court, with a strong 18 goal rst quarter the scene was set. Langy made several changes at the break & took it up to the Mounties, however our short game was too strong. Chloe dominated in centre while Kate & Carly R complimented the mid court well. The girls ended up with a 12 goal win, a 24 goal turnaround from the last time we met (50-38). Next week we play Bonbeach, we will be looking to continue our form & walk away with 4 good wins. We will be celebrating Jess Anwyl’s 50th game also!

Netball NotesLangwarrin KangaroosIt gives me great pleasure to congratulate our fearless A grade captain Maddy Mac on 50 games today for our club. A real hunter on the court, she leads from the front and is queen of the intercept. She has the highest pitched squeal on the peninsula and I’mtold her favourite drink (pineapple juice) gives her super powers. Well done Maddy.Last week our C and D grades took down the redleg ladies with strong team work, great passing and amazing defense. The B grade game was at high pace for the entire duration and with our defender down the other end made for an entertaining match. Just going down to a team of experience and physical strength. Our A grade team turned up to play with a strong and clear mindset of how they wanted the game to be played. They stuck to the game plan and there were some amazing passages of play. Going down in the end but walking away with their chins up on what was a great tussle. This week Chelsea visits us at the Lloyd and we are denately out for 4 from 4 on the netty courts and 3 from 3 on the oval. Reminder that our annual Grand Final Day breakfast at Berrettas Langwarrin is just around the corner and tickets are selling fast. Special guests include Dusty Martin from Richmond and Sam Newman. Please contact the club for ticket details. A great day on the social calander. Go Roos.

Bonbeach SharkettesAs we took on Chelsea over the weekend, the girls went in with high hopes of getting a few points on the board. It was a great day of netball even with 100km winds blowing the ball every which way the girls played to the conditions and we had very close games. D & C grade were two great games to watch, being on the sidelines you can see these girls improvements from a mile o, Rheanna has done a great job this season coaching these girls the right way in our eyes we are winners. A & B grade, B grades game was a close one being only a goal down but Chelsea just had more control of the game in the end just wanted to mention our shooters Georgia, Emma and Bernzy shooting in that wind wouldn’t of been easy was a great eort. A grade what a game that was, the last minute of that game was probably the longest minute we on the side line had experienced, fantastic team work and seeing the control and calmness across the court is what won you the game another win on the Board for A grade!! This week we are up against Mt Eliza at home, good luck girls. Go Sharks, Fins up!!

Karingal BullettesLast week we welcomed Frankston YC to the Bullpit. D grade stepped on the court and ran away with the game. Our defence was unstoppable and Steph and Dani were as accurate as ever in the goal ring. C grade got o to an explosive start but errors let the opposition back into the game. The lead was pushed back out and at the nal siren the margin was 10. Peyt and Mel were solid in goals and Kiah stopped everything on the line. B grade had their rst loss in quite some time but to their credit - they did ght until the very end. Injuries to Tara & Sara during the game didn’t help. Well done to Peyton from C grade - stepping up and lling gaps all over the court. A grade had Sam Gooden in career best form - shooting like a boss. Tegan was also on re and had we been stat taking - I am tipping the shooting percentage would have been in the 90s! The defence end was missing Mardi and Matilda but that didn’t stop Jayde and Renee getting the job done convincingly. As always our mid court was amazing with KKO & Court leading the way! This week we travel to Linen House to take on the Tigers. Hoping for another great day of netball. #GOBULLS #REDWHITEBOOM

Mornington BulldogsA change in times saw C and D play on a Wednesday night. A ne shooting exhibition by Erica shooting 21 of our 22 goals under heavy defence by both Pines defenders. Lauren ran centre all game and Bec P showed terric defending skills for her rst game at GK.C’s were full strength with our captain nally back. Gabby enjoyed her run at C and it was wonderful to see her decision and precision passing again. Dee and Sophie were awesome again. Both Sophie and Ainslie deserve their promotions to C grade and have slotted in perfectly. After a strong 1st qtr we let our opponents back in during the 2nd. Gabby then showed her versatility @ GA with Riss showing o her juggling skills gave us a ne win.We took a while to warm up in B with a 10am start and an even rst quarter. Great defence in the 2nd had every player creating turnovers. Meg and Eliza were relentless in the defensive goal circle and the 2nd proved to be our winning quarter. The second half was only one goal dierence as Pines threw everything at us.Again a slow start in A as Pines put pressure on us. Alex put some booming passes from GD into the goalers but they couldn’t nish o. A couple of injuries meant we had to lift and we did, winning the third qtr. In a hard fought match the girls never gave up but the Pines ran out winners. We say Bon Voyage to Tessie Cooper as she goes overseas but this will then give an opportunity to another player to be promoted to A grade in time for nals.

Chelsea SeagullsA very winnable game lost for the As this weekend with too many missed opportunities. A good ght back from 6 goals down in the rst to only lose by one. Kattie was consistent all game ghting right till the end. Hayley C was strong in attack for us. Wishing char and Hayley L a speedy recovery, both who went down with ankle injuries. Back in the winner’s circle this week, the B ladies put on great game. With plenty of determination in the blistering wind, we were able to run out the game well. Our defence held up against Bonbeach attack, with fantastic running and pressure from Tess and Brigette down the court. Shannyn and Andrea dominated the centre and WA positions, constantly oering and working the ball in to our shooters. Maddy and Kayla (supported by Kiah) fought hard against dicult shooting conditions and were instrumental to our win.Another great win from our c grade team. We took court red up after last weeks win. It was windy which created some passing & shooting challenges. Georgia and kiah did well in shooting. Ally starred in defence with her intercepts. Mollie, tahlia & lauren worked well bringing the ball down court. Great win by our team.D’s are dominating, two wins in a row! We started o slow and worried in the rst half, we moved things around until we had it correct. Defence by Brodie was outstanding and gave us so many more opportunities to score and take the win from Bonny.

Seaford TigersThis year seems to be ying by which each Thursday training and Saturday creeping up on us every week. Thursday night out B grade girls took on the Eagles in the luxury and comfort of our indoor courts. However we almost wished we played outside to have something to blame our s#%^ passing on. The girls unfortunately struggled to convert with edi dominating for most part of the game. C and D were less fortunate playing in the outdoors Saturday morning. And lets just summarise the matches by saying the girls got a nice bout of exercise running around in the absolute clinic edi asp gals put on. At least we can say we all had fun.... Sunday saw our rst ever club day to support the Rettes (ladies football) with all three sides playing at home. Big thanks to all those who set up, manned the bbq tent and to the netty girls for making the eort to come on down. This week there is no rest for the wicked; A grade take on edi on Thursday night and have to back up their eorts on the Saturday against Karingal. Two thrilling matches involving the top 3 sides so bring your popcorn because it will be entertainment central with our tiges hoping to bag a couple of wins. #tigertime

Pines PythonettesThis week, we had our games ran over two days to accomodate ladies day which was an absolute success! Good work to Kelly and Ashlee for putting on such a wonderful day. And thank you to Mornington for moving the games around :) Wednesday night D and C played and D grade had a really strong game through the entire court, with defence really proving plenty of opportunity to get ahead and convert the goals. BOC was Sally C grade didn’t quite get there unfortunately but they were led by the captain and birthday girl Alana to maintain a strong game, which at times just lacked a bit of consistency. B grade played on Saturday morning, we started o really well, and it was goal for goal for most of the rst quarter but it fell away for us from there unfortunately. There are still a few issues for us getting the ball through the midcourt, but our defence absolutely killed it, with our BOC Tina having a eld day picking up plenty of intercepts. A grade kept the ow from last weeks game and came in and provided a really strong and consolidated game. The girls have really found there groove with each other and it is showing on the court. It was a really good win and we are hoping to nish the season o the same way. BOC was Bev! A few more games left and we want to nish it o strong :)
