Dear Visitors & Parishioners…
Your generous contributions to Project Advance
last year enabled us to upgrade some speakers
and processors in the Cathedral sound system.
More work is still needed on acoustic treatment
to dampen feedback.
Information on this will be coming soon.
Through Project Advance, the family of
Maria Shearon gave the Cathedral funds in her
memory to purchase and install a stair lift in
Rosary Hall. The stair lift is located at the
backdoor of the hall by the alley.
Please note
this stair lift is only
for those who have
difficulty going up
and down stairs –
people with arthritis,
with walkers or those
for whom climbing
stairs is simply too
tiring. It is not a
wheelchair lift which enables someone in a
wheelchair or scooter to be transported up and
down the stairs on a platform. Unfortunately the
dimensions of the hall staircase do not allow a
wheel chairlift.
Some of the Project Advance rebate money to our
Cathedral parish is being used to pay for
consultants as we endeavour to make plans to
renovate seismically and improve facilities at the
Cathedral. This involves a heritage agreement
with the City of Vancouver and a developer. More
information on this will be offered soon.

SOLEMNITY OF THE DEDICATION
H oly Rosary Cathedral was Dedicated on
October 3rd, by Archbishop Duke. Even though the church was completed in 1900, the church was only dedicated in 1953 because a church could not be dedicated until it was debt-free. Dedication means that it is something that is set apart for sacred use, in our case the church, set apart from secular use and given to God. For us as members of the Cathedral community it is a time to reflect on what it means to be a member of this parish. To reflect back on the heroic witness and hard work of those who labored to give us a beautiful church, but more importantly, who passed on the faith to us.
FEAST OF THE HOLY ROSARY
O n October 7, the Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Known for several
centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory,” the feast day takes place in honor of a 16th century naval victory which secured Europe against Turkish invasion. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. For us this is a special feast, since it is the patronal feast of the Cathedral, and thus also of the Archdiocese as the Cathedral is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Vancouver. Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “The rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known; it is the book of the simple, which initiates them into mysteries and knowledge more satisfying than the education of other men; it is the book of the aged, whose eyes close upon the shadow of this world, and open on the substance of the next. The power of the rosary is beyond description.”
