April 1, 2018 - Easter Sunday of the Resurrec on of the Lord - Page 3

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Easter morning throughout the world, we join the Church as it announces the most important message of our Christian-Catholic faith: “Jesus is Risen! – He is Truly Risen as he said!” With these words we enter into the Easter Season celebration when we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection and the great joy that Jesus has risen from the dead and has conquered sin and death. This action of love gains for us the promise of eternal life. In this year’s Gospel from Mark we hear about how the women went to the tomb early in the morning and found the stone rolled away from the entrance of where Jesus’ body was laid. The moving of the stone may have been a big worry of the women as they prepared to go and anoint the body of their Master and Lord. When they found the tomb opened, they only had to enter the tomb to see what had happened. They had to “enter into the tomb” in order to be told of the great event of the Resurrection and to experience it by seeing the empty tomb. In order for each of us to experience the Mystery of Easter in our lives today, we also have to “enter in”, in order to “see” what Jesus has accomplished for our lives. To enter into the mystery of the Resurrection, we need to allow ourselves to be transformed into true disciples of Jesus so that we are able to fulfill the Lord’s command to tell others about this truth and how we experience God’s love each day. Let us each Rejoice in the Resurrection of Christ and spread it to others as modeled by the women who went to the tomb, found it empty, enter in, and ran “overjoyed” to tell His disciples that He Is Risen from the dead! May each of us be filled with the power of this Easter, be transformed by it, and spread this Good News to others! I wish a Blessed Easter to you and your family. In Christ, Fr. Ernesto M. Orci Pastor

April 1, 2018 - Easter Sunday of the Resurrec on of the Lord - Page 5

All creation is reborn with the new Adam who rises from the tomb. During the next fifty days as we move toward Pentecost, we will contemplate the post-Easter manifestations of Jesus, the meaning of his Death and Resurrection in our own lives, and our call to be Christ’s body through which he continues to touch human pain and heal broken hearts. A more confident and articulate Peter than we are used to weaves all these themes into the address he delivers to the household of the new convert Cornelius. Peter’s confidence is rooted in what he later asserts: he has witnessed everything he describes. What he preaches is a basic catechism of early Christian faith that begins with a review of Jesus’ earthly ministry. First, he recalls the baptism and Jesus’ anointing with the “the Holy Spirit and power.” Second he clarifies why power was given to Jesus-not to lord it over anyone, but to concretely manifest God’s love by doing good, by healing, and by driving out demons. Peter knows this is true. He saw it! The fact that Peter and the apostles “are witnesses” to the healing ministry of Jesus assures Luke’s audience that what they hear proclaimed accurately reflects what Jesus himself preached. This is no minor issue for the infant Church (or for us who follow them). Then Peter directly takes on the scandal of Jesus’ ignominious Death, speaking without melancholy or embarrassment. And he can do that because he knows how the story ends: God raised the Man, Jesus from the dead! This, too, he knows from experience. Without pride, Peter asserts his credibility by claiming to be among the few privileged to see the risen Christ, a claim he concretizes by insisting the “ate and drank with him” after the Resurrection. Finally, Peter claims he and the others were commissioned by Jesus to “preach the gospel.” Though he stresses future divine judgment (an important aspect o f ear ly preaching to pagans), Peter ends with his most hopeful message by recalling the words of the prophets that promise forgiveness of sins to everyone “who believes in him.”

community for your generous donations of time, food and money to feed the homeless at the Sunnyvale Cold Weather shelter on March 10th. We provided enough food for 140 people and presented the shelter a check for $500. All the shelter clients (including children) and staff were very appreciative. Many thanks from Social Concerns and the poor of Santa Clara Valley.

Winter Toiletries Collection a Colossal Success

Once again the overwhelming generosity of St. Lawrence parishioners was demonstrated with our largest EVER collection of items to be distributed by the Valley Homeless Health Care Van’s personnel at homeless encampments and shelters and migrant camps. You donated socks to warm feet, toiletries for cleansing and comfort, umbrellas as a shield to the rain and sun, and sunglasses to protect sensitive eyes from glare and dust. A huge Thank You from the staff on the van, their clients and the Social Concerns Committee. Please continue to save items for future collections.

Pbro. Santiago Martin.
