May 1972 Page 41 BRITISH CAMPAIGNS AND MEDALS , ( Hints for Beginners, Part 2) By V. G. Potter In a previous article I described how t o start a collection of medals, and what pitfalls to avoid. In order to fully enjoy a medal collection, it is necessary to have as nuch information as possibl~ on the part- icular series of nedals or canpaigns in which you are interested. This brings forward the question of books; these are indispensible to any serious collector, whether of coins , stanps or modals. Unfortunately many collectors with hundreds of dollars worth of material have hardly any worthwhile I books on their hobby. For a collector of British medals, I would recommend the following excellent ' books: "British Battles and Medals" by Major L.L. Go~don, "RibSons and Medalstt by Dorling and Guille and "The Standard Catalogue of British Orders, Decor ations and Medalst1 by E. C. Joslin. For collec- tors of nedals to Canadians, I would highly recornend 'War Medals and Decorations of Canada1 by Ross id. Irwin. Major Gordonts book is the standard work for canpaign medals as it lists d.1 reginents which were entitled to any part- icular nedal or bar, plus type of official naming, and a resume of the cmpaign. Dorling Is books also g&ve Orders of Chivalry, Decorations, Long Service Medals and For- eign awards, For the collector of medals of a particular series, such as the Military General Service Medal 1733 - 1814 a medal roll is invaluable. This is a list contain- ing the name of every person awarded the medal and which bars he received. !€he list is made up by regiment, so that to check a medal, all that is required is to look up the regiment and check in the alphabetically arranged list for the name and ini.tials.

BRITISH CAMPAIGNS AND MEDALS , ( Hints fo r Beginners, Pa r t 2)

By V. G. Potter I n a previous a r t i c l e I described

how t o s tar t a co l lec t ion of medals, and what p i t f a l l s t o avoid.

I n order t o f u l l y enjoy a medal col lec t ion, i t i s necessary t o have as nuch information as p o s s i b l ~ on the part- i c u l a r s e r i e s of nedals o r canpaigns i n which you are in teres ted .

This brings forward the question of books; these are indispensible t o any ser ious co l lec tor , whether of coins , stanps o r modals. Unfortunately many co l l ec to r s with hundreds of d o l l a r s worth of mater ia l have hardly any worthwhile I books on t h e i r hobby.

For a co l lec tor of B r i t i s h medals, I would recommend the following exce l len t ' books: "Br i t i sh B a t t l e s and Medals" by Major L.L. Go~don, "RibSons and Medalstt by Dorling and Guil le and "The Standard Catalogue of B r i t i s h Orders, Decor a t ions and Medalst1 by E. C. Jos l in . For collec- t o r s of nedals t o Canadians, I would highly recornend ''War Medals and Decorations of Canada1 by Ross id. Irwin.

Major Gordonts book i s the standard work f o r canpaign medals as it l i s t s d.1 reginents which were e n t i t l e d t o any part- i c u l a r nedal or bar, plus type of o f f i c i a l naming, and a resume of the cmpaign. Dorling Is books a lso g&ve Orders of Chivalry, Decorations, Long Service Medals and For- e ign awards, For the co l lec tor of medals of a pa r t i cu l a r s e r i e s , such as the Mil i tary General Service Medal 1733 - 1814 a medal r o l l i s invaluable. T h i s i s a l i s t contain- ing the name of every person awarded the medal and which bars he received. !€he l i s t i s made up by regiment, so t h a t t o check a medal, a l l t h a t i s required i s t o look up the regiment and check i n the a lphabet ica l ly arranged l i s t fo r the name and in i . t ia ls .

Page 2: XI. 41 A. OFFICERS AND MEDALS · 2012. 3. 7. · icular nedal or bar, plus type of official naming, and a resume of the cmpaign. Dorling Is books also g&ve Orders of Chivalry, Decorations,

Page .42 Sone regiments have r o l l s containing n m e s of the nenbers who re- ceived raedals f o r any of the caupaigns the regiment served in, T h i s i s of g rea t value t o the person who co l l ec t s t o one regiment only,

For those who are i n t e r e s t ed i n the d e t a i l s of the cmpaigns and b a t t l e s , the re i s now available a r e p r i n t of !'War Medals of the B r i t i s h A r ~ y 16 50 - 183111 by T. Carter W. H. Long, Also of value are regimental h i s t o r i e s , m y l i s t s , orders and dispatches.

Once one has decided t o c o l l e c t nedals, i t i s inpor tan t t o have a r e l i a b l e source of supply; as there c e f a r fewer dea le rs I n nedals than there are f o r s t m p s and coins, I have added a l i s t of dea le rs t h a t I have d e a l t with and can recornend, (See Later on).

Another sor;r ce of supply i s a medal club, as members of ten have i t e n s fo r t rade or sa le . I n addit ion the beginner w i l l receive much help and advice on the hobby from raore experienced co l lec tors , Some col3ectors are only i n t e r e s t ed i n s ingle nedals, wh i l s t o thers prefer groups,

The advantages and disadvantages of the above are as follows: a s ing le nedal i s i d e a l i f the co l lec t ion i s the type where one example of each nedal or b m i s required and where the e x t r a ~ e d a l s i n a group are redundant. Few co l l ec to r s l i k e t o break up a group as this spo i l s the nan's record of service. To the co l lec tor who l i k e s t o study the person who won the awards the group i s nore in te res t ing .

Typical groups, i n my col lec t ion, which have i n t e r e s t i n g s t o r i e s are, 5 t o Captain E. Atkin, O.B.E., ROAD These are o f f i c e o f t t he Order of the B r i t i s h Ehpire, Queens South Africa with 6 bars CSgt.). B r i t i s h W a r & Victory raedals (Capt,) & Long Service & Good Conduct (C.S.M.) . E, Atkin joined the Royal Ar t i l l e ry a t . 14 years of age, Pronoted by Lord Kitchener from Corporal t o Sergeant f o r bravery i n 1901, promoted t o 2nd Lieutenant in-1915 and capta in i n 1917 a d awarded the 0.B.E. i n 1913 fo r his services i n World War 1.

Another group i s of 5 t o Colonel A.H.S. Goff, C.M,G., R,A. This cons i s t s of the Queens South Africa Medal with 3 bars , (Major), the 1914 Star and Bar (Lt. Col.), B r i t i s h War Medal & Victory nedal (Col.) and Queen Vic tor ia ' s Jubi lee nedal of 1897 apt,) . Col. Goff served with the llContenptible L i t t l e Array1! of 1914 and was under f i r e i n the ea r ly b a t t l e s of World War 1, He was the owner of StanderwichCourt and was e n t i t l e d t o bear the Coat of Arras of "Goff of H a l e Parkt Han t s lT . T>.sse arns were taken from the f ani ly i n 1660 and no t res to r - ed u n t i l 1820. Col. Goff was a d i r e c t descendent of Maj . Gen, W i l l i a n Goffe who served under Cromwell and was one of the trial judges of King Charles 1 and who signed his death warrant and i t w a s f o r this reason t h a t the Coat of Arns was f o r f e i t .

s ingly. T h i s i s because t h e nore cowmon medals a r e thrown i n by t h e d e a l e r as they would n o t s e l l so r e a d i l y by themselves. Therefore, when buying a group f o r a couple of i n t e r e s t i n g lredals i t i s neces- sa ry t o t ake comon medals which one nay already have,

Whenever I purchase a n e d d I always c lean (not pol i sh) it with soapy water o r s i l v e r d ip , and put a c lean rabbon on it. A d i r t y or t a rn i shed n e d d wi th an old r ibbon looks uns igh t ly and very few old s o l d i e r s would be seen dead v i t h t h e i r medals i n such condit ion,

When medals are mounted i n groups it i s important t o place -then i n t h e c o r r e c t sequence, Generally t h i s i s Orders, Decorations, Medals f o r Bravo:-7, Campaign medals i n d a t e order , c o m e ~ o r a t i v e neda l s (such as coronat ions) , long se rv ice nedals and f o r e i g n awards.
