The Xavier Foundation will kick-off this year’s Parish Appeal on September 22 and 23. Campaign Chairs John and Dana Miller of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Associate Chairs Dave and Maureen McGraw of St. Pius X Parish will lead the com-munity-wide effort to raise $415,000 for Xavier High School. Pledge cards will be available before and after all Masses the weekends of September 22, 23, 29 and 30. The gift of a Catho-lic education would not be possible without your prayers and generous gifts.

The Annual Parish Appeal is an opportunity for parishioners, current parents, past parents, alumni and friends to make a fi-nancial contribution to the Xavier Foundation to support Xavier High School. The Appeal raises money to pay down the mort-gage on our facility and helps to make certain a Catholic sec-ondary education is affordable for everyone. We are extremely grateful for your gifts and want you to know that we welcome and appreciate every gift, no matter how large or how small. All supporting parishes have recruited volunteer chairs to orga-nize the campaign. 2012 Pastors Appreciation Dinner

On June 16, the Xavier Foundation Board of Directors and staff welcomed our metro-area pastors to Xavier High School for the annual Pastors Appreciation Dinner.

We are blessed and thankful to have the leadership and support of our pastors for the annual Xavier Foundation Parish Appeal.

On Wednesday, August 15, Xavier High School opened their doors for the 15th academic year. Anniversary celebrations, including com-munity service projects with Four Oaks and Habitat for Humanity have been planned throughout the year. To celebrate the anniversary, LaSalle alumna Connie Collins (L76) designed a special anniversary edition of the Xavier High School and the Xavier Foundation logo.

The Xavier High School ground breaking took place on June 22, 1997, at which Archbishop Jerome Hanus expressed his pride in the hard work and accomplishments that were making Xavier a reality. He stated, “This new Catholic high school is the result of the united effort of many in the wider community who are committed to the future of our children.” Fifteen years later, the two-story air-conditioned build-ing, covering 146,500 square feet welcomes more than 750 students each day. Xavier’s first 15 years have yielded a long and impressive resume of accomplishments from students and faculty alike, including academic prowess, athletic success, fine arts excellence, continued physical and spiritual growth, and responsibility to our community. The driv-ing force behind this success is faith in action. The teachings of the Roman Catholic Church are foremost in Xavier’s mission of “Learning today. Leading tomorrow. Serving forever.”

Clancy to Chair Board of Directors

The Xavier Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Brenda Clancy as Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors. Brenda is the Executive Vice Presi-dent, Chief Operating Officer of Transamerica.

Brenda and her husband Jim have two children: Michael and Sara (X06) and belong to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish.

Clancy replaces Bill McCartan (R83) who served as the Founda-tion Chair for five years. McCartan continues to serve on the board as past president.

Ellen Bouchard, a Foundation board member since 2010, will

assume the role of Vice-Chair. Ellen and her husband Mike have four children: Colleen (X10), Tim (X11), and Claire (X15) and Jeanne (X15). Ellen is employed at Frontier Natural Products Co-op as the Brand Manager for Bulk Herbs & Spices.The Bouchard family belongs to John XXIII parish.

September 2011 • The Xavier High School Theatre Department presented “Nunsense.”

• Xavier students Kate Gal-lagher and Megan Reiman announced as National Merit Semi-Finalists.

• The Foundation Parish Appeal kicked off. The appeal raised nearly $407,000 in support of Xavier High School.

October 2011• International Round Table event brought more than 67 foreign exchange students from 35 foreign countries and 12 stu-dent journalists to Xavier High School for a day long informa-tion sharing session.

• Xavier students participated in the school’s ninth Kairos retreat.

• Respect Life Week was recog-nized with a variety of events including nationally known speaker Christopher Stefanick who address students and faculty with his talk “No Imita-tions,” and a baby shower for Aid to Women and Birthright.

• The Xavier Marching Band earned the highest score ever in the history of Xavier March-ing Band at the Iowa City High Invitational. The Marching Band also earned a Division I Rat-ing at the State Festival for the second year in a row and third time in school history.

• The annual Memorial Mass was held to remember and honor alumni, teachers and faculty and friends of Xavier High School.

November 2011• Xavier hosted “Teens Encoun-ter Christ” weekend (TEC).

• The Xavier High School community participated in an annual Service Day, helping throughout the community and in our supporting parishes.

• The Pom Squad performed in the “Stack the Stands” Compe-tition hosted by CR Prairie and won the 4A Pom Division.

December 2011 • Xavier students donated 150 units of blood, helping save 450 lives, during the “Battle of 42nd Street Blood Drive.”

• Xavier students, faculty and staff provided Christmas gifts to area needy families through the Angel Tree project.

• The Xavier Music Department presented the 14th Annual “Christmas with Xavier.” The 2011 event was sponsored by Dave Wright Subaru.

January 2012• Seventh Annual “Discover Xavier Night” was hosted for 8th graders and their parent. The evening is designed to pro-vide prospective students and their parents an opportunity to learn about the Xavier experi-ence.

• Xavier students raised more than $7,000 at the Fifth Annual Mini Dance Marathon. Pro-ceeds were sent to the Univer-sity of Iowa Dance Marathon which supports the children being treated for cancer at the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital.

• Thirteen Xavier students trav-eled to Washington D.C. to par-ticipate in the March for Life to show their support for respect for all life and for human rights.

• Thirteen Xavier groups earned a Division I Rating in the Large Group District Speech Contest.

• A 50th Anniversary celebra-tion was held for coaches and players of the Regis 1962 cham-pionship basketball team.

February 2012• Three alumni, Sean Greenwalt (L90), Carol Ann Riha (L75), and Adam Spanich (R95) were in-ducted into the LaSalle – Regis – Xavier Alumni Hall of Fame.

• The Fourth Annual LaSalle - Regis - Xavier Alumni Basketball Tournament took place. More than 75 alumni returned to Xavier for the festivities.

• The Foundation Business Appeal kicked off. By the end of the appeal, more than $122,000 was raised in support of Xavier High School.

• Xavier students participated in “Souls for Soles,” a shoe col-lection program for those with-out access to shoes. Students and faculty gathered more than 500 pairs of shoes.

• Xavier High School’s Drama Department presented “Cinder-ella.”

• Eighteen Xavier Business Pro-fessionals of America partici-pated in the BPA State Confer-ence. Twelve of these students qualified to compete at the 2012 BPA National Conference held in Chicago, IL March 2012

• Five Xavier students began a year long commitment with Habitat for Humanity and Youth United to build a house for an underprivileged family.

April 2011• Grandparents of Xavier High School students were honored with a light breakfast and social followed by a visit with Xavier Principal, Tom Keating before uniting with their grandchildren for Mass.

• The Junior class participated in a day of community service and faith sharing.

• Holy Thursday was observed with a presentation of the Sta-tions of the Cross. This tradition has become a truly powerful time of prayer and reflection for XHS students.

•Xavier, as State Champion, represented Iowa in the Nation-al Semi-Finals of the Economics Challenge, finishing in 12th place nationally. The team combined members of Xavier’s 1st and 2nd place state teams.

•The Foundation Alumni Phon-athon ended. The appeal raised more than $77,000 in support of Xavier High School.

May 2012• Two Xavier students received perfect scores on the National Latin Exam. Xavier is one of two Iowa school still teaching Latin.

• The senior class enjoyed a day of spiritual retreat.

• One hundred and fifty seven seniors celebrated with a Bac-calaureate Mass before becom-ing official graduates of Xavier High School.

• Eleven Xavier students at-tended the Business Profes-sionals of America National Leadership Conference held in Chicago, IL. Six students brought home finalist awards.

June 2012 • Seventeen students and three adult leaders traveled to the Catholic Heart Worker Camp in Memphis, TN and 30 students and chaparones traveled to Guatemala to take part in Xavier’s annual service trips.

• The Girls Soccer team won their seventh straight state championship, setting a state record!

July 2012 • In July Xavier hosted its first annual week long Summer Academy for students grades 1-4.

On August 10, 2012 the Xavier Founda-tion hosted a donor recognition reception to honor members of the Archbishop Circle, Heritage Society and Endowed Scholarship Circle. Archbishop Jerome Hanus, esteemed guest and member of the Xavier Foundation Board of Direc-tors, personally recognized the donors for their commitment to Catholic Education.

During the reception, three new mem-bers were inducted into the Heritage Society. 2012 inductees include Lumear “Bud” Netolicky (1918-2010), Marga-ret Netolicky, and Rev. Msgr. Joseph O’Brien (1931-2011). Leonard and Evelyn Dolezal, John and Anne Cun-ningham, and the Robert and Mariella Schmitz were also welcomed as members of the Endowed Scholarship Circle.The Xavier Foundation is committed to ensuring future generations of students

will continue to receive a quality Catholic secondary education. The Heritage Soci-ety was established to recognize donors

who share this commitment by including the Xavier Foundation in their estate or deferred giving plans through a bequest in their will, as a beneficiary in an insur-

ance policy or retirement plan, or through a trust or charitable gift annuity.

The Archbishop’s Circle was initiated to recognize donors who have demonstrated their commitment to Xavier High School by supporting the Foundation with gener-ous unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more during the Foundation’s fiscal year. Gifts at this level help support the Founda-tion’s mission and help Xavier plan for the future. Each year the Foundation acknowledges the honor roll of Arch-bishop’s Circle members based on gifts and payments given to the annual appeals during the fiscal year.

Members of the Endowed Scholarship Circle have created an endowed scholar-ship with a minimum gift of $10,000 to help provide students with tuition assis-tance for generations to come.

Alumni AddressXavier alumnus Kyle Tietz (X11) addressed the attendees of the Donor Reception and thanked them for their contributions, not-ing it was their support that makes strong academic, spiritual, and extra curricular experiences, like the one he had, possible.

Kyle stressed the impact his time at Xavier had on his faith, even after he graduated and moved onto college: “Transitioning from Xavier to a public university has been an interesting experience. The comfort that comes from a faith-focused community is no longer present and an array of other views are pushing in from all sides. But my time at Xavier helped me realize how im-portant my faith is to me and encouraged me to seek out a community that shared in my beliefs. The annual Booster Club golf outing was a smashing success! On Monday, June 11, 168 Xavier High School Booster Club supporters and golf enthusiasts, including nearly 60 LaSalle and Regis alumni, enjoyed a day of fun, sun and golf at Elmcrest Country Club. Alumni Hit the Links for Xavier Booster Club

Barb Miltner, a Regis 1984 alumna and math teacher at Xavier High School, spent her sum-mer “vacation” working in the the Environ-ment, Safety and Health department at Rock-well Collins this summer, where she performed statistical analysis to model energy consump-tion.

According to Jenny Becker, manager of Com-munity Relations for Rockwell Collins, the company for a fourth year partnered with the Iowa Mathematics and Science Education Partnership (IMSEP) to provide “real world externships” to Iowa teachers. For Miltner, the integration of “soft skills” – communication and teamwork – into her lesson plans, and the importance of self-initiated ap-proaches to problem-solving, are examples she plans to share with her high school students.

“Students are given a textbook that tells them how to solve a problem step by step. That’s not real life, and not what I experienced at Rockwell Collins,” said Miltner, “I want students to approach problem solving authentically, discovering approaches on their own, rather than following a prescribed method. This leaves more room for innovation.”

Barb is a native of Cedar Rapids, a lifelong member of St. Pius X church, and a 1984 graduate of Regis High School. She gradu-ated from Iowa State University with a BSME, then met and married her husband Mark after moving back to Cedar Rapids. They own a local business, The Sled Shed, and have two children: Max, a sophomore at Xavier, and Alicia, an 8th grader at Regis Middle School. Barb worked as an engineer in the utility industry, most recently as a Project Manager, before going back to school to obtain her Masters degree in education. This is her 8th year teaching Mathematics at Xavier. In addition to coaching Xavier’s robotics team and serving as the moderator of the math club, her hobbies include reading, walking, and chauffeuring.This article has been adapted and portions of this article have been reprinted with permission from Rockwell Collins.

Susan (Edwards) Dietz (R59) of Cedar Rapids died May 27, 2012. Susan is survived by her husband, Virgil; son, Jerry; daughter, Debra; and a sister, Joan Lehner.

Richard Thoennes (R59) of Cedar Rapids, died March 23 2012. Richard is survived by three children, Adam, Sarah Schloss, and Vicki Airy.

Arlene (Fuller) Raker (R60) died November 27, 2011. Arlene is survived by her husband, Harry; four children, John, Philip, Amy (Raker) Clemons, and Andrew; and a sister, Norma Kenyon.

William “Mike” Cramer (R62) of Floos-moor, Ill died May 7, 2012. Mike is survived by his wife, Charlene Cramer; daughter Jennifer Stork, Kristin Belmonte and Scott; eight grandchildren; siblings Barbara Stemlar, Douglas, Patrick (R61), the late Sister Mary Carol and the late Steven Cramer (R66).

Carolyn “Rene” Anderson (R68) of Ce-dar Rapids, died July 21, 2012. Carolyn

is survived by her son, Andy Anderson; Andy’s father, Gary Anerson; three brothers, Terry Leidigh (R64), Jim Leidigh, and Rick Leigdigh; and several nieces and nephews.

James Harris (L69) died May 1, 2012 after a 15 month battle with pancreatic cancer. James is survived by his wife, Diane; three children, Jim, Jyl Morgan, and John; eight grandchil-dren; mother, Kathryn; and a sister, Linda (Harris) McVay (L65).

Margaret (Molly) Quetsch-Bales (R73) died July 15, 2012. Molly is survived by her husband, Brian; two sons, Shaun and Joe; daughter, Heather; granddaughter Zoe Bales-Ramos; father, Dr. Richard Quetsch; two brothers, John (R80) and Joe (R72) Quetsch; and two sisteres, Mary Hansen (R68), and Kathy Edwards.

Michael Flanders (R78) of Arlington Heights, Ill, died March 31, 2012 after a courageous journey with pancreatic cancer. Michael is survived by his wife, Mary Beth; children of Kelsey, Adam and Paul; his

mother, Mary; and brothers Thomas, David, Robert, Susan and James.

Mark Roman (R79) of St. Charles, MO, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died July 11, 2012. Mark is survived by his wife, Sandra (Snead) Roman; his father, Anthony Roman; his brother, Tim Roman; and half sister, Patty Eckman.

Emily Kerper (R96) died April 27, 2012. Emily is survived by her mother, Rose Han-son; father, Richard Kerper; brother, Justin Kerper (R98) and sister, Courtney Hanson (X06).

The Rev. Everett B. Hemann of Cedar Falls died April 24, 2012. Fr. Hemann was an as-sociate pastor of All Saints in Cedar Rapids while on faculty at Regis High School. He is survived by four brothers, The Rev. Melvin Hemann, James Hemann, The Reverand John W. Hemann and Matthew Hemann; three sisters, Kathleen (Clemens) Full, Sister Camilla Hemann, and Lucille Mueller.

Steve Herring (R67) completed a one year assignment as Technical Advisor to the As-sistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy at the Department of Energy in Washington DC. In that capacity he has worked on the US response to the Fukushima Daiichi accident, the development of small modular reac-tors and the recommendations of the Blue Ribbon Commission on the management of used nuclear fuel. He will return to the Idaho National Laboratory where he is a Laboratory Fellow and has been active in the develop-ment of nuclear energy since graduating from MIT in 1979.

Norman Lehner (L78) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Saint Leo Unversity.

Jason Boyd (R91) and wife Deanna wel-comed a son, William Douglas, on December 3, 2011. The family resides in Dallas, TX.

Matt Cullen (R93) and wife Lori welcomed twin sons, Evan Joseph and Sean Thomas on April 9, 2012. The family resides in St. Petersburg, Fl. Matthew Williams (L96) and Abigale Rohrer were united in marriage on August 26, 2011. The couple reside in Sioux Falls, SD.

Nicole O’Neil (X99) and Dave Venouziou were united in marriage on August 20, 2011. The couple resides in Chicago, IL.

Elizabeth Negro (X00) and Michael Gabri-else were united in marriage on February 18, 2012 in Elkhart Lake, WI. Elizabeth is em-ployed with the Kohler Company as a Senior Project Analyst for the Engine Division and Michael is the owner and operator of Show-case Painting and Drywall. The couple reside in Sheboygan, WI.

Krystal (Detweiler) Parker (X00) and hus-band Michael welcomed son Everett Michael into their family on April 19, 2012. The Parker family resides in Iowa City, IA.

Beth Siegel (X08) graduated with honors in psychology receiving a bachelor of arts degree at UNI. Beth will now attend graduate school at the Universitiy of St. Mary’s in Minneapo-lis.

Christina Miller (X09) was accepted to the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Class of 2016.
