120 STUDENTS ATTEND THE COURSE ON THE HISTORy Of VALENCIA Cf AT THE UNIVERSITyThe rector of the University and the President of the Valencia CF Foundation inaugurated this third edition

The third edition of the course History of Valencia CF, organized by the Centro de Formación Fun-dación Valencia Club de Fútbol and the University of Valencia began on Monday, 20 February, with the offi-cial opening in the Philology Faculty, Blasco Ibáñez campus, venue of the sessions until the end of the course on 6th March.

About 120 students enrolled in this edition, in which it was necessary to expand the number of places due to the high demand from students.

The event had the interventions of the rector of the University of Valencia, Esteban Morcillo; the Pre-sident of the Fundació VCF, Társilo Piles; the director of the Physical Education and Sport Service, José Campos, the director of external and institutional relations of the Valencia CF, Jordi Bruixola, and the director of the course, Alfonso Gil, also Profes-sor of Journalism at the University.

Next 18th March Valencia CF will be 93 years since its foundation and 89 years for Mestalla pitch (May 20th), two anniversaries that symbo-lize the importance of the Valencia CF in a sportive, social, economic, fi-nancial and cultural level both in the national and international football. In this sense both Esteban Mor-cillo and Társilo Piles pointed out that both entities “share the city” in which they have a great tradition and prioritize a common objective: to address to the society.

The rector also added that among the pur-

poses of the University not only the provision of services to society

is included but also re-search, and the institu-

tion develops all kinds of sports studies, some of them collaborating with

Valencia CF. Then, Jordi Bruixola stressed the

possibility, which not all the clubs

have, “of studying our history”. For his part, José Campos mentioned also the rise of the female presence in the football world.

For his part, Alfonso Gil referred to the

“footballized society and the need to study the Club and its role in society in order to un-derstand that process”To achieve this goal, the 120 stu-

dents will participate in ten three-hour sessions, under an interdisci-plinary group of teachers made up of university professors, journalists, authors of different essays and pu-blications on the entity, responsible persons in the Club and players.

It is also planned, for those enro-lled, to visit Mestalla and the exhi-bition “Science and sport with Va-lencia FC” hosted by the Sciences Museum of Valencia.

INTERVIEWREACHING THE SUMMIT AT 20Arantxa Martí nez is Spain’s fi rst runner-up of aerobic gymnasti cs and is part of the group of University students who parti cipated in the China Universiade

Arantxa stu-dies 3rd year of journalism at the University of Valencia. In his fi nal season, she was fi rst runner-up of Spain sin-gles and twelft h in the European Championship in additi on to ha-

ving parti cipated in the World Cup in Italy, Bulgaria and Portugal.

Questi on: How and when did you begin to compete?

Answer: I started when I was 8, when I enrolled in aerobics as extracurricular ac-ti vity at school, and my coach took me to some school competi ti ons. Later I started to train outside the school and compete at regional and nati onal levels. At age 14, I did my fi rst competi ti on as part of the Spanish selecti on in child category.

Q: what is your dream as a sportswoman?A: my dream is to take the most of

all my possibiliti es, and not to have the feeling that I could have arrived further. I decided not to consider any concrete ob-jecti ve because I noti ced that in this world it is very diffi cult. I look forward to conti -nue working hard and willingly and sooner or later the reward will appear.

Q: there are many university students who do not practi ce any sport, what I would say to encourage them to practi ce aerobics?

A: they should fancy to play any sport, I believe that University life is very easy to combine with other acti viti es. Perhaps Aerobics is not the most suitable sport to practi ce at University, because it should begin very early, but students should dare to play any sport, and to take advantage of all the opti ons that UV off ers in the sports fi eld, I think there are many and varied.

Q: what are the values in a sport such as aerobic gymnasti cs?

A: I think that aerobic gymnasti cs is a very complete sport where strength, fl e-xibility, and great technique is needed. It is also a very arti sti c and colorful sport.

Q: which was the most emoti onal day of your career?

A: I think that the 1st ti me I was Spain champion at 13, and when I got the fi ft h place as individual in the world Champion-ship in Germany 2008.

Q: can you tell us an anecdote about those days in the Universiade?

A: It has been a great experience in ge-neral, since aerobic gymnasti cs is not an Olympic sport, this has been just as living a “miniolimpiada”. Everything has been very exciti ng, sleeping in the Olympic vi-llage, the incredible faciliti es, the fact that it was in China, etc. Something that caught my att enti on was the market on the last days of the competi ti on in the village ex-changing the clothes from diff erent se-lecti ons. In there one can exchange from training suits to backpacks or shoes.

Q: as a member of the Elite program for athletes of the UV, what advantages do you have in your case?

A: in my case I count on a one-year scholarship of € 600, full payment of tui-ti on and free access to the sports facili-ti es, the physiotherapist and sports psy-chologist. I also have the ease of changing exams when I compete in offi cial compe-ti ti ons.

Q: aft er parti cipati ng in the China Uni-versiade what are your expectati ons for this season?

A: in the Universiade we focus in the group category, this year we are prepa-ring the world championship to be held in June in Bulgaria and where I train for the individual category and trio.

Q: the course started with the welcome of the rector, Esteban Morcillo, together with the delegati on of nine stu-dents of the University of Valencia who this summer parti cipa- ted in the Uni-versity Olympics. How did the meeti ng go?

A: it was very nice and exciti ng that the University made a small recogniti on to all of us. I think we all feel confortable and happy to be there, and also for our Univer-sity

to thank us for this.

Q: it is the maximum par-ti cipati on of students of the University of Va-lencia in the most important world competi ti on, the Universiade. All indicati ons are that the students of the University of Valencia have an enviable level.

A: well I think so, I believe that all stu-dents who we have att ended this com-peti ti on is part of the respecti ve Spanish selecti ons, so the level is very high.

Q: what is the key for an academic ins-ti tuti on to have this level?, what contribu-tes in these excellent results?

A: I think that to support and help athletes contributes a lot, and in this case I think that the University off ers many fa-ciliti es, from fi nancial aid, which in mino-rity sports such as mine is necessary, aid for physio or psychologists. Give faciliti es when making exams is also very important for us, because we have many internati o-nal competi ti ons and have to miss quite a lot.

Q: is it diffi cult to combine journalism with competi ti ve sport?

A: the truth is that I have not had any problem to combine journalism with my training sessions, I feel much more comfortable than in my years at High School. Maybe in practi cal degrees there is litt le more complicati ons but nothing to be fail to sett le.

Q: does it involve many sacrifi ces to combine both careers? is it worth it?

A: yes, it entails sacrifi ces, but I am already used to it, I cannot say that I live

University life to the limit, but I sha-re the same ‘day by day’ whith my colleagues wherever I can. The only thing is that I do not have much free ti me, but I believe that with a bit of organizati on, sacrifi ce and desire you can do everything what you want to.
