Istanbul has a deep, layered history. From its beginnings as a fishing village to one of the pillars of the Roman world. The final stop on the Silk Road. The centre of the Ottoman Empire as the Turks spread their huge net across the Middle East. Across the centuries the city drew in cultures and blended them. Growing up there, singer-songwriter Gaye Su Akyol breathed all that in every day, along with her family’s ancient roots in Anatolia. Those rich traditions combine to form part of the sound she’s developed on her album Hologram Ĭmparatorluğu (Hologram Empire), where sultry Turkish melodies twine around spiky, twanging guitars and insistent rhythms. Some roots can be knotty. One of those is certainly Pixvae. As the hybrid peach palm from which it borrows its name, this unusual group is the result of cross origins, a space where the warm melodies of the Afro-Colombian music meet the energy of rock and eclectic jazz culture. Confronting the worlds, merging traditions, Pixvae embodies an unsuspected alchemy between jazzcore and currulao: a direction that shakes the perception, upsets the entrails and awakens the imagination. The artistic concept put forward by this group of young virtuoso Colombian percussionists and singers is exceptionally strong. For them, tradition is more than a body of infinitely replicable precepts. A tradition is not a dogma, rather it is an invitation made by older generations to the generation of today to ‘make music’, by inventively appropriating the repertoires with which they grew up. Also, the approach of these musicians involves careful reflection, as inventiveness does not mean that everything is permitted. This is where the strength of the recordings that are now offered to us lies: these musicians take care to ensure that the delicate soundscape of the world does not turn into cacophony. Listen here.

PONK is an innovative new trio from Moravia (CZ). Moravia, and especially the Czech/Slovak border region, has one of the richest living folklore traditions in Europe, with diverse dialects, dances and musical styles that vary greatly from village to village. ‘Postfolklor’, PONK’s debut album, draws heavily on these traditional musical motifs, yet the band manage to give these traditional sounds exciting new life with their unconventional modern treatment. The unique texture is largely down to the unusual and innovative use of the traditional folk instruments they use: cimbalom, violin and double bass, resulting in a unique and distinctly post-folklore sound grounded in pop, rock, blues, metal, hiphop, and RnB that breaks all boundaries of the genre. Incredibly, just two musicians have created this masterpiece of subtlety and radical minimalism combining their thoughts to produce a thousand hypnotic sounds. Érik Aliana has experienced the music scene of the world on leaving his native Cameroon, emerging on the other side armed with a new solidity, absolutely sure about where he was going. He says what needs to be said, he says it eloquently, serenely, but with a potent truthfulness. Picket, Erik’s long-standing friend and colleague, feeds their story, nourishing it with his own creativity. A new album by Tao Ravao, well known guitarist and singer from Madagascar, here playing with Thomas Laurent (harmonica). Evocation of blues, Malagasy folksongs, Cape Verde saudade, Brazilian forro, calypso from Trinidad and French creole. The artists empathy with their heritage is matched by the vocal/ instrumental virtuosity of the performers of this inspired tribute to the musics of the black diaspora. Listen.

Radical Ethno: no one has managed to devise a more appropiate label for Banda Nella Nebbia, which skilfully marries wild, primal energy with technical virtuosity. While formally sophisticated in style, their music is performed with fluency and ease, making it both transparent and readily appealing. Their music borrow heavily from a wide range of popular music, including Frank Zappa, Les Claypool and Primus, John Zorn, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, but traditional Lithuanian, klezmer, and Polish themes are equally important inspirations for them. While rooting their sound in diverse sources of traditional music, Banda Nella Nebbia shape their original style by intentionally deconstructing pop-culture clichés, taking us on an unexpected, uncanny, and breathtaking rollercoaster ride. Marcin Ciupidro is a vibraphonist, composer and musician active in the Wrocław alternative scene. He has recorded with many bands across various styles – traditional music, improvised jazz and alternative rock (Robotobibok, Metamuzyka, Neurasja, Coldair). Ciupidro first solo album defies categorization. The point of departure is the contrast between the sound of acoustic instruments and electronic synthesizers. But it is not a mere sound experiment – the compositions are based on subtle melodic themes, inspired by the minimal repetitive and superimposed rhythmic structures, creating sound spaces with the slowed down flow of time. All this, sometimes cut by a sharp free jazz explosion, creates an unusual, magical landscape. Check it out!

Enriched with their musical experience with Enono Anya (Musical Fusion Between Morocco and Caledonia) and their tour in Morocco, Sumaele releases his third album. The vocal harmonies borrowed from the taperas continue to form the DNA of a musical proposal enriched by the suggestions and arrangements of Camel Zekri, an Algerian musician now well known on the Kaneka scene. Born in South Africa, Katia Guerreiro grew up in the Azores and discovered herself in Lisbon. She wanted to be a teacher, a veterinarian and then she became a doctor. But fate found her. And she found fado. Her faith kept her waiting for the right moment. The themes were collected over the years. From inside the drawer that is her heart, they came to be sung with the emotion that characterizes her. There were many choices, the decision was difficult, but the 12 songs that were elected represent the new Katia Guerreiro, who has been preparing us, over the years, for this moment. "Don't do what I've already done" Fela Kuti used to say to his artist followers. And this is the advice Fanga has tried to follow since they started up in 1998. Their afrobeat that marries their political calling, is the fruit of multiple interbreeding, from hip-hop to funk via jazz to mandinka. Structured around Korbo, their singer, the band is inspired by multiple influences and it is not without reason that their new album is entitled ‘Kaleidoscope’. ‘Kaleidoscope’ re-establishes the energy of the early days; less jazzy and more funky, from here on they are blending afrobeat with traditional African music from Togo, Benin, Ethiopia, Niger, Mali, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, on top of lyrics which continue to question the notions of justice, freedom and the right to happiness, in a world which is so cruelly lacking in it.
