Before the wheel bearings are installed and adjusted using the wheel bearing setup tool, the old wheel bearing races must be removed and the new wheel bearing races must be pressed into the spindle support. These new races come along with kit #2420, which also includes your new bearings and end seals. Each kit #2420 is enough to do one wheel.
Here’s how to differentiate between the inner and outer bearing within KIT #2420.Outer Bearing Inside Diameter: 1.375”Inner Bearing Inside Diameter: 1.186”
The purpose of this Wheel Bearing Setup Tool is to set up the end play of the spindle in the spindle support housing before final installation.

Proper installation requires kit #X2476. This kit includes: one (1) Tubular Spacer, and nine (9) Shims measuring from .097” - .145” in increments of .006”. One kit #X2476 is enough to do one wheel.
1. 0-150 ft/lb Torque Wrench
2. 3/4” Open End Wrench
3. 1 1/8” Socket

6. Measure the end play with a dial indicator. With the .145” shim from kit #X2476 installed as a starting point, end play should exceed the .007” upper limit. See the example below on how to select a thinner shim.
Disassemble the setup tool and install the calculated thinner shim size. Reassemble the unit and measure end play. Repeat this process until you achieve the specified end play tolerance.
7. After you have achieved the correct end play tolerance, remove bearings, tubular spacer & shim from the tool. use this tubular spacer and shim combination on the spindle to achieve the correct tolerances for spindle installation.

Bearing shim in use is = .145”
Bearing End Play = .011” which is .004” over the limit
New shim installed is = .139” which is .006” smaller
New Bearing End Play = .005” which is within the limit
End play was reduced by .006” by using the smaller shim, and is now .005” which is within the .001” - .007” limit.
Starting with the largest shim and working down is the best way to avoid crushing the bearings against the races. If you are not seeing any end play with the .145” shim in place, check to make sure that the bearing races were pressed in properly, as this is the likely cause.
This photo is used simply to demonstrate proper placement of the dial indicator. When the spindle housing is on the car, you would use the inside of the trailing arm to attach the indicator’s magnetic base. This will hold the indicator firmly in place. With the indicator in this position, push and pull on the setup tool. The difference in the two readings is the end play.

1. Place the outer bearing onto the large shoulder of the set up tool with the taper facing inward.
2. Next, add the tubular spacer with the large end against the outer bearing.
3. Add a .145” shim next to the tubular spacer. This shim will be found in kit #X2476 detailed above.
4. Place the tool into the spindle support & install the inner bearing, spacer, large washer & nut.
5. Torque the nut to 100 ft/lbs. The assembly should rotate freely in the support housing. There should also be noticeable play when you push and pull on the setup tool.
