Click button “Write” on the corresponding probe rod, press “Up” and “Down” keys on the probe rod with new main board at the same time to finish WRITE operation of the calibration values for the new main-board. The benefit of this operation is to read out the calibration values from the probe rod via probe rod update in case of the computer is damaged in the later operation. E. How to handle it when camber has larger error? When camber of some probe rod has larger error (Its clinometer is not damaged), and the cambers of other probe rods are all correct, you can use the following methods to modify the calibration file (Check.ini) to solve the problem. Now let us take FR probe rod as an example: 1. Run X-631 main program, System Management F5 –〉Maintenance for Probe Rod F9 -〉Detailed information for probe rod F2. 2. Respectively install FR probe rod and one of FL, RL and RR probe rods with correct camber on the same wheel clamp to perform the test, the screen will display the interfaces as shown in the following:

Normal probe rod (FL) camber tested value: A1 = -0.534°

Abnormal probe rod (FR) camber tested value: A2 = 0.176°

3. Modify calibration file (Check.ini) Original calibration value of the abnormal probe rod (FR):

After modification, the camber tested value of the abnormal probe rod (FR): A2 = -0.528°

5. Write the modified calibration value in the probe rod

Exit main program, Run: installation directory \ ProbeUpdate.exe, and write FR calibrated value in the probe rod for later update.

F. How to handle it if steering wheel cannot be centered? Steering wheel cannot be centered and vehicle side pull are of two different issues, please distinguish them.

For the issue of Steering wheel cannot be centered: when the vehicle

is driven straight-ahead, the steering wheel is not centered (has deviation to left or right). It is mainly caused by toe-in angle, but if the factors described in the following, which cause the vehicle pull aside, have not been eliminated completely, it can also cause that the steering wheel cannot be centered. If the wheel aligner is normal, and the adjustment method is correct, and then the steering wheel should be centered in theory; but in many cases, due to the

Page 68: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

LAUNCH X-631 Wheel Aligner Product Service Manual Appendix 4

8-11

existence of intermittent or non-adjustable factors, the steering wheel may be at the position within the range of ±5°from the centered position…it is still normal. In special case, for some individual vehicles, the steering wheel may be deviated more than 10°after normal adjustment. In this case, please do not think that the wheel aligner is not accurate at first. Now you should perform the following procedures: 1. Check for light interference. 2. Check if the following factors causing the vehicle pull aside exist or not. 3. If you cannot find the existing factors mentioned above (It doesn’t indicates that there are not problems), please test

more than 3 vehicles to see if the steering wheel has the same problem…deviating to the same direction. 4. If it does, it is required to check the wheel aligner for some problem. 5. If it doesn’t, it indicates that the wheel aligner has no problem, please check for other problems. For some parameters

which cannot be adjusted, you can combine camber and toe angle to solve the problem according to your experience.

For the issue of vehicle side pull: when the vehicle is driven straight-ahead, if the driver

leaves his hands off the steering wheel, the vehicle will pull to left or right side.

a. Vehicle side pull is caused by:

1. The difference between left and right casters of the front wheels is more than 0.5°, and the vehicle will pull to the side with smaller caster.

2. The difference between left and right cambers of the front wheels is more than 0.5°, and the vehicle will pull to the side with maximum positive camber.

3. The difference between left and right cambers of the rear wheels is more than 0.5°, and the vehicle will pull to the side with minimum camber.

4. You can observe the change of the vehicle wheelbase according to the setbacks of front and rear axles. If the sum of front and rear setbacks is more than 0.2°, the vehicle side pull can be felt, and it is to the side with smaller wheelbase.

5. Sideslip, mostly caused by the tire

6. Tire pressure is not even.

7. The brake to the vehicle is asymmetric, and the vehicle skid.

8. Unbalanced power steering.

9. Suspension parts are worn and work abnormal. Due to wheel aligner cannot detect all the factors causing the vehicle pull aside, sometimes it is all normal according to the wheel aligner, but the vehicle still pulls aside during driving, and you should shoot troubles one by one in this kind of condition.

b. Tire wear, it is mainly caused by the following three factors:

1. Front tire wear on two outsides or insides simultaneously ——front toe-in angles are not correct.

2. Front tire wear on the single wheel, camber is not correct.

Page 69: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

LAUNCH X-631 Wheel Aligner Product Service Manual Appendix 4

8-12

3. Rear tire wear, camber and toe angle are not correct.

In addition, other tire wear factors which wheel aligner cannot detect are as follows:

4. Bad driving habits.

5. Tire pressure is too high: tire wear will occur along the centerline of the tire tread.

6. Tire pressure is too low; and meanwhile two-side wear occur on the tire.

7 Chassis parts are abnormal.

8. Vehicle floating

The Caster angle approaches to 0 or it is negative.

3. The suspension parts are distorted lightly and not smooth after the vehicle encounters heavy bump.

d. The centering ability for the steering wheel is not good

1. Caster is too small.

2. Steering mechanism is abnormal.

3. The other angles are not correct, which cause the system is not smooth.

4. The tire is abnormal.

The tail part of the vehicle body will pull aside when it encounters light bump or when it speeds up. It is mainly caused by incorrect rear toe angle.

Appendix 6 Calibration Operation Guide (Using the calibration frame of X-712 wheel aligner to calibrate the probe rods of X-631 wheel aligner)

Importance! This Guide is only suited to the calibration frame with good working conditions.

Assembling the Calibration frame Please assemble the calibration frame on the smooth ground according to the figure shown in the following:

Calibration frame

Notice:

First, please adjust the adjusting screws respectively and keep their extended length be approximately same; And then place the calibration shafts on the brackets respectively. Note that the corresponding surfaces should be

firmly contacted each other when placing the holder block on the calibration shaft; Keep the difference between two diagonals less than 1mm (The length of each diagonal is about 3025mm); If the length of one of the diagonal is far from 3025mm, please pat the calibration frame along the direction of the

calibration shaft; And then confirm the length of another diagonal. It should be 3025mm approximately. Repeat the operations

mentioned above to ensure the length difference between two diagonals less than 1mm.

Page 83: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

LAUNCH X-631 Wheel Aligner Product Service Manual Appendix 6

10-2

The length of each diagonal is about 3025mm

One end of the tape measure is attached on the measurement terminal

10-3

The length of the diagonal is 3035mm displayed on above example figure, and it is required to pat the calibration bracket until the length data is about 3025mm displayed

Adjusting the Calibration Shaft Level We can use any one (the new one is preferred) of the probe rods of X-631+ wheel aligner for adjusting the calibration

shaft level. The two calibration shafts of the calibration frame can be adjusted level independently, now we take one of them as an

example to explain the level adjustment operation procedures. 1. Install the probe rod on one end of the calibration shaft, and adjust the probe rod level according to the indication

of the mechanical level bubble of the probe rod, and then lock the probe rod well. Record the value of Camber 1 displayed on the screen of the probe rod;

Page 85: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

LAUNCH X-631 Wheel Aligner Product Service Manual Appendix 6

10-4

Camber 1 is displayed on the screen of the probe rod

2. Remove the probe rod and install it on another end of the same calibration shaft. Adjust the probe rod level

according to the indication of the mechanical level bubble of the probe rod, and then lock the probe rod well. Record the value of Camber 2 displayed on the screen of the probe rod; keep the probe rod still and evenly adjust the two adjusting screws under the bracket while observing the change of Camber 2; Stop adjustment operation when the value of Camber 2 is coming to (Camber 1 + Camber 2)/2.

Page 86: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

LAUNCH X-631 Wheel Aligner Product Service Manual Appendix 6

10-5

Record the value of Camber 2 and adjust it to (Camber 1 + Camber 2)/2

3. And then remove the probe rod and install it on another end of the same calibration shaft. Adjust the probe rod

level according to the indication of the mechanical level bubble of the probe rod, and then lock the probe rod well. Record the value of Camber 1 displayed on the screen of the probe rod once more; now the value of Camber 1 should be changed to (Camber 1 + Camber 2)/2, too.

4. That is to say that the value of Camber 1 should be equal to that of Camber 2 at last after adjustment. Otherwise, please perform the adjustment operation again until the value of Camber 1 is equal to that of Camber 2. Of course absolute equal is preferred (keep the difference between Camber 1 and Camber 2 within 2″ at least).

Calibration 5. Suppose that these 2 calibration shafts are of the 2 axles of vehicle (one is the front axle, and another is the rear

axle). Install four probe rods on the calibration frame in turn;

Page 87: X-631 Wheel aligner after-sales service manualEN

10-6

Install four probe rods on the calibration frame in turn

6. Adjust four probe rods level according to the indications of the mechanical level bubbles, and lock the probe rods well and then switch on them;

7. Enter X-631+ Calibration Program to perform the calibration operation. Click [NEXT] button in turn without paying attention to the prompts on each interface (about 10 interfaces in total), but when the system performs data acquisition operation, please wait for 3 seconds at least before you clicking [NEXT] button.
