Message from WAHPERD President, Shawna McIlnay

Greetings!

I hope your school year is off to a fantastic start! I want to express how blessed I have been to have the opportunity to serve the health and physical education community as your Board President the last year. The WAHPERD Leadership Council has worked very hard to bring you a fun, highly engaging, and quality convention this year, “Charting the Future.”

Our annual convention will be held November 10-12, 2019, in Casper, WY, and will include professional development sessions that support health, physical education, and dance. The convention offers you the opportunity to further develop best practices, gather new ideas, and build your professional network.

The convention begins with a two-great session’s at 1:00 pm on Sunday, November 10, 2019, from National Health Teacher of the Year, Melanie Lynch with “Let’s Have Fun in Health Class,” and Deb Stephenson, Mike Bradley, and Lois Mauch in a technology infused session called “Using Technology to Promote Social Emotional Learning in Physical Education.” Following these sessions, there will be a jam-packed session with OPEN National Trainers Aaron Hart and Brian Devore from OPEN who will present content from OPEN’s Ultimate Disc and Plug and Play Fitness modules. Finally, the night will conclude with our Cowboy Hero’s Social with food, fun, backyard games, and networking. Sessions start again on Monday, November 11 at 7:30 am.

We all know how important our future professionals are for the profession of health and physical education. Again, this year we are focusing on giving them the opportunity to present in a dedicated session time. The University of Wyoming students will be presenting a variety of physical activities on Tuesday morning to all convention attendees. Participants will have the opportunity to see seven presentations from our future professionals. Be a part of this exciting look into our future professionals and learn cutting edge ideas to use in your classroom.

We are pleased to announce that US Games, BSN Sports, and OPEN will be sponsoring our Teacher of the Year. Each WAHPERD Teacher of the Year will receive a complimentary TOY ¼ zip pullover, a $200 gift certificate, and a banner to commemorate their achievements with their name and the award received to hang in their gym. We are very excited for this sponsorship opportunity to recognize our TOY recipients.

Message from WAHPERD President Elect, Jeff Wordeman

Dear WAHPERD Members,

As quality physical educators, we teach our kids and staff how important our wellness (mental, physical, and spiritual) is. We stress staying active, eating right, taking mindful moments, tactics to destress, and getting enough sleep each night, but how many of us actually practice what we teach? I know I struggle with all these areas throughout the school year, especially during coaching seasons. I always need to be doing something, so I have the tendency to pile so many things on my plate that I stretch myself very thin throughout the school year, which ends up causing a lot of stress.

We all know the results of stress; a weakened immune system, increased risk for chronic fatigue, heart disease, decreased mental stamina, mood swings, exhaustion, and even impacting our job performance. These results of stress reduce our quality of life and can have an impact on our family lives as well.

I read something on Facebook that caught my attention so much so that I have created a little reminder note on my desk for me to read every day. It said, “If you don’t take time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.” But how do we do this? How do we take time for our wellness in the business of life and work?

A quick Google search on “ways for teachers to reduce stress” produced well over 10 pages of ways to reduce stress, and each of these had at least five, and up to 15 suggestions. A few ideas are, take some time to get out of the building during planning time or lunch to get some fresh air, get away for a day on the weekend to take in different sites and sounds, take a personal day during the week, have an accountability partner, make personal goals and share them with your accountability partner, and get in little bouts of exercise each day. Take some time to research what would work best for you, and then take time for your wellness. It is better than taking time for your illness.

Message from WAHPERD Past President, Deb Stephenson

Dear WAHPERD Members,

As the year comes to a close, I want to thank all of my WAHPERD family for the opportunity to have served you these past years. It has been a pleasure and an honor to be a part of the leadership for our organization. WAHPERD is an organization of strong and passionate people and as we move forward, we will use that passion and continue to become even stronger. Last year, I chose the theme of “Cowboy Strong” because I believed we were one of the best kept secrets in our profession. Today I still wish to challenge you to continue to shine and share who we are here in Wyoming, share the great things our members have done and are continuing to do.

John Maxwell says, “leaders don’t become great because of their power but because of their ability to empower others.” Two years ago, we passed a vote to operate under a new structure and set of op codes. This structure is developing and growing stronger empowering our members to leadership not just on the board but in the committees. I encourage all of you to take a role in that leadership in whatever aspect feels right for you.

So many new things are on the horizon for Wyoming. Mike Bradley and I continue to train and promote the IHT heart rate monitors while growing the data from the Wyoming State Solutions project. “Health. Moves. Minds” is a great new service-learning program by SHAPE America, and we encourage you to register and get your schools on board. This program will benefit not only your school, but also 15% of the funds raised goes back to WAHPERD. Not the least of the exciting upcoming events is the convention in Casper on November 10-12, 2019. It is packed with amazing presenters to educate all of us with new and exciting ideas for our students.

Whatever your passion drives you to do, plot your direction and continue to make Wyoming WAHPERD “Cowboy Strong.”

In Memory of Nancy Raso Eklund

Nancy’s accomplishments were varied and many, not the least of which was serving WAHPERD as the Executive Director from 1996 to 2019. No matter how long she knew you she considered you part of the family. She was a passionate advocate for physical activity and healthy active lifestyles for everyone but especially children. She whole heartedly believed in the mission of WAHPERD and spearheaded many activities, events and conferences empowering our members to follow best practices, teach with passion, advocate for growth and walk the talk as a professional. Nancy worked tirelessly to advocate for our state and the children we serve.

Our WAHPERD family wishes to offer our condolences to Nancy’s husband Byron, daughter Lauren, son Chip, daughter in law Sara, and grandsons Boston and Bo. We love you Nancy and thank you for all of your years of friendship, mentorship, and service to Wyoming AHPERD. While we will never be able to fill your shoes, we vow to continue the mission to empower our membership to educate the public about healthy active lifestyles. We will continue to fulfill our destiny making Wyoming AHPERD “Cowboy Strong.” You are no longer here with us, but your legacy will live on. Rest in Peace our dear friend.

Wyoming AHPERD Family.

Accessible Resources for a Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program

Submitted by Kim S. Hunt, WAHPERD Leadership Council Member – Physical education Teacher, Wilson Elementary School

Comprehensive School Physical Activity programs, better known as CSPAP, have been building steam over the last decade. Physical Educators around the world are leading the charge to ensure all kids are getting the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity daily. CSPAP can happen in a multitude of ways! As physical educators and physical activity leaders, it is critical to understand the challenges faced to increase daily activity. It can also be challenging to sift through the overwhelming amount of information available regarding CSPAP. This article will help provide a simplified variety of quality resources to continue the ongoing pursuit of ensuring 60 minutes of physical activity (PA) for every child.

According to SHAPE America, “A CSPAP is a multi-component approach by which school districts and schools use all opportunities for students to be physically active, meet the nationally-recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, and develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be physically active for a lifetime.” CSPAP has five components for increasing PA to a minimum of 60 minutes each day. Physical Education is the foundation of a quality CSPAP, Before and Afterschool programming, Physical Activity within the school setting, Staff Involvement and Community and Family engagement. According to the CDC, “The national recommendation for schools is to have a comprehensive approach for addressing physical Education and physical activity in schools. Physically active students tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance (e.g., memory), and classroom behaviors (e.g., on-task behavior).” The 2018 United States Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth reports that only 24% of children 6-17 years old participate in 60 minutes of PA. The link below is the full report: http://physicalactivityplan.org/projects/PA/2018/2018%20US%20Report%20Card%20Full%20Version_WEB.PDF?pdf=page-link

CSPAP recognizes the individual approach needed for every school and age group. The program begins with a quality Physical Education program. The CDC recommends the Physical Education Curriculum Analysis Tool (PECAT ) and the School Health Index. https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/pdf/18_300595-A_PECAT_042619_508tagged.pdfhttps://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/shi/index.htm

SHAPE America recommends The essential components of Physical Education https://www.shapeamerica.org/standards/guidelines/upload/Physical-Education-Program-Checklist.pdf

There are several resources to help Physical Educators, Administrators, and all educators to understand, and implement CSPAP for improving student wellbeing. Below is a simplified list of resources for reference.

Defining CSPAP:

● “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the leading national public health institute of the United States. The CDC is a United States federal agency under the Department of Health and Human Services and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.”https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/physicalactivity/index.htm

● “SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators is the national organization that serves as the voice for 200,000+ health and physical education professionals across the nation. Since its founding in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in physical education, and our National Standards for K-12 Physical Education serve as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country. We provide programs, resources and advocacy that support an inclusive, active, kinder, and healthier school culture and champion health and physical educators at every level, from preschool to university graduate programs. Our extensive community includes members, advocates and supporters, as well as 51 state affiliate organizations (including the District of Columbia). Together we are working, in and out of schools to prepare every child to lead a healthy, physically active life.”https://www.shapeamerica.org/cspap/what.aspxhttps://www.shapeamerica.org/cspap/resources.aspx
