An article in the Miami Daily News on May 18th, 1928 profiling the Miami American Bakeries Plant in the Wynwood neighborhood. American Bakeries was the proud bakery of Merita Bread.

The Wynwood plant had the capacity to produce 80,000 loaves of bread per day.

The Miami plant was located at 561 NW 32nd Street in Wynwood.

An article in the Miami News on February 13th, 1927 announcing that graduation was postponed because the auditorium was not complete.

Robert E Lee Middle School was built in 1924. A new auditorium was built in 1927, but was not completed in time for the graduation ceremonies for the ninth grade class in 1927.

My great uncle, Stanley Combs, was a part of the 1927 ninth grade graduation class and is listed in this article.

The former American Bakeries Company building was converted to an artist’s space in 1986 called the Bakehouse.

The Bakehouse logo is shown on the building next to the exhaust stacks.

By the late 1950s, the Wynwood neighborhood demographics began to change. The large influx of Puerto Ricans into the neighborhood gave Wynwood the nickname of “Little San Juan”.

By the late 1950s, the Wynwood neighborhood demographics began to change. The large influx of Puerto Ricans into the neighborhood gave Wynwood the nickname of “Little San Juan”.

Eugenio Maria De Hostos Wynwood Neighborhood service center.

This center is located at 2902 NW 2nd Avenue.

The service center is named after Eugenio Maria De Hostos, who was a Puerto Rican patriot and writer.

Roberto Clemente Park 22

Roberto Clemente Park was dedicated in July of 1974. It was named after the Puerto Rican Baseball Player that died in a plane crash on December 31st in 1972.

The park was named Wynwood Park prior to the change of name in 1972.

Within the park is the Dorothy Quintana Community Center.

The community center within the park was named after community activist, Dottie Quintana.

The picture below is common housing stock in the Wynwood neighborhood north of 29th Street along NW 2nd Avenue. The housing stock dates back to the late 1920s and the early 1930s.

Roberto Clemente Coffee Shop 24

Across the street from the park was the Roberto Clemente Coffee Shop.

The coffee shop is now a grocery store called La Familia. It resides at the same location as the former Roberto Clemente Coffee Shop.
