Welcome to Wyberton Primary SchoolI would like to extend a warm welcome to you and your child. Wyberton Primary School is a caring community school striving for excellence in all that we do. Ofsted state ‘The quality of teaching is outstanding throughout the school.’  We aim to give every child the best possible primary school experience.  We believe in the education of the whole child and aim for high academic standards along with happy, confident individuals who know how to enjoy themselves and how to make good social relationships. We have 5 core values; aspiration to achieve from all children, staff and parents; consideration and respect; pride; trust and creativity and curiosity.

We aim to provide an exciting and creative curriculum based on the principles of Business and Enterprise, which is firmly rooted in the objectives of the National Curriculum and the Birth to Five curriculum. We believe in rigour and depth, encouraging personal fulfilment and understanding, self-motivation, resilience and commitment. We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities that support learning, encourage high self-esteem, participation, team work and healthy life choices.

In September 1999, as a result of government legislation, we became a Foundation school.

Parental support is valued highly as is the promotion of positive relationships and mutual understanding. Parents are welcome to come into school to discuss any concerns relating to the education of their children whilst respecting our professional standing and experience. Contact the school office for a mutually convenient appointment. As a school, we value parents’ views and make every effort to keep parents informed of the effect that their contributions have upon the school as a whole.

We hope that the following pages will help to answer some of the more immediate questions you may have and, later, prove useful as a quick reference.

We hope that you will be as impressed with our school as we are proud of it and that the years you and your child share with us will be remembered as happy and productive.

Aims of Wyberton School

We believe our school should be a place to which the children enjoy coming and feel safe and secure; where there is an atmosphere of happiness and mutual respect; where they are relaxed and confident in their relationships with people of all ages, cultures and religious backgrounds.

We expect each one of our children to work hard, and only be satisfied with their best.

We aim to see that each child receives their full National Curriculum entitlement or Birth to Five if in Reception and is well equipped with:-

The ability to use their own language effectively and imaginatively in reading, writing and speech;

The ability to question and argue rationally;

The ability to apply themselves to tasks and to develop a lively enquiring mind;

We seek to encourage regard for moral values, and to develop self-respect and respect for others.

We believe every child is an important and unique individual who must be helped and encouraged to explore, to think, and to learn for themselves. In addition to academic achievements, we hope that when your child leaves Wyberton School they will welcome the opportunity of making new friends and be prepared to tackle new types of learning, have concern for the welfare of others and for rules which control their own community and finally be a credit to themselves, their school and their parents.

We expect that all the staff and governors of the school will feel respected and valued by pupils, parents, other colleagues and the community for the contribution they make to the school and the lives of the young people they share.

School Classification

Wyberton Primary School is a co-educational primary day school that caters for the needs of approximately 210 children aged 4-11.

Admission Policy

Our admission policy for young children beginning at Wyberton is annual. We accept each September all children who will be 5 before 31 August of the following year.

All parents of new children are invited to school towards the end of the term before they start to meet the reception teachers and ask any questions they may have.

For the first week children beginning their schooling attend for mornings only. Our experience has taught us that this half day introduction to school is beneficial. Details may vary from year to year, but parents are informed in good time.

Children are entitled to receive full time education from the beginning of the next full term (in Lincolnshire, currently Terms 1, 3 and 5) after their fifth birthday. At the head teacher’s discretion, most children start in the September immediately preceding their fifth birthday.

Classroom Organisation

Classes are organised into Year Groupings from Reception to Year Six.

Transfer to Secondary School

Children at Wyberton usually transfer at 11 to the Thomas Middlecott Academy, Kirton, Boston Grammar School for boys or Boston High School for girls.

To attend a Grammar School your child must take two tests taken during the last year at school, the 11+. The tests used assess a child’s ability to reason and basic ability in Maths and English.Arrangements for taking the tests are made by the local Grammar Schools. Parents do have an option to withdraw their child from the testing procedure and to appeal against any decision made.

School Curriculum

Our curriculum has received national recognition for the work we do to raise standards and provide a high quality, holistic primary experience. The award was presented to children from the School Council at a national award ceremony held in London and recognises our truly ‘Enterprising Curriculum’ that is based on high expectations, sound values and skills needed to prepare our children for all aspects of life and work beyond school. Our curriculum is, of course, founded in the National Curriculum and delivered to your child at a level that is both appropriate and challenging for his or her needs and ability. We also adhere to the five Every Child Matters outcomes of Be Safe, Be Healthy, Enjoy and Achieve, Economic Wellbeing and Making a Positive Contribution. At Wyberton Primary School we aim to provide creativity, we insist that staff make learning fun, we expect high standards and support all learners to do their best.

The school years have been divided into three phases. The Foundation Stage is for children aged 3 to 5 and covers preschool education and Reception. Key Stage 1 is children in years 1 and 2. Key Stage 2 is children in years 3 to 6. English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology have been designated as ‘core’ subjects Technology, History, Geography, Art, Music and PE are classes as Foundation Subjects Religious Education, whilst not part of the National Curriculum, is required to be taught by law. If you would like more information about how we plan and how the curriculum is delivered in the classroom, please make an appointment to see your child’s class teacher, who will be happy to explain how it works.

At our school we use the expertise of the curriculum leaders and the class teachers to produce work, which ensures all areas of the curriculum, are covered and progress is made by matching work to children’s ability.

Children’s’ work is usually subject based but links are made between subjects where appropriate. Maths and English are taught in ability groups. We believe that an effective teacher is always learning and we constantly seek to improve the quality of our education through rigorous staff training.

Keeping Parents Informed

Parents are kept informed of their children’s progress throughout the year. In the autumn term there is a Parent’s Evening when an appointment is arranged for a confidential discussion about each child and his/her general progress. In the spring term another parent’s evening is held. In the summer term a detailed report is sent home. Parents of children who are on our Special Needs register will be invited to review their child’s Individual Education Plan termly. In addition, termly progress reports on your child are sent out in Terms 2, 4 and 5.Parents can see teachers at mutually convenient times by appointment. Sometimes parents may be invited to school to talk about their child if there is a problem. In addition to this we invite parents into school regularly for example, to take part in their child’s class assembly, to participate in our special curricular weeks (Expressive Arts Week), to join steering groups to help us make decisions that affect our children and to take part in workshops such as how to support your child in reading. We also host Open Days in school when parents are invited in to spend time in the classrooms while normal lessons take place.

Record Keeping, Profiling and AssessmentAt Wyberton School, staff have worked closely to ensure that curriculum planning addresses the statutory requirements, classroom delivery of the curriculum is efficient and effective and the assessment and reporting arrangements not only satisfy the law but provide parents with information they are likely to want to know about their children’s progress.

Each teacher keeps records of children’s individual progress through the planned curriculum on a daily basis.

The children undergo assessments in all areas throughout the year and take tests in reading and spelling to assess where they are and how they can be helped. The National Standard Assessments related to the National Curriculum are implemented during Year 2 and Year 6. These are partly standard tests and partly teacher assessments. The results of these are reported to parents and our latest school results are in the brochure. Children will also take non-statutory tests in years' 3, 4 & 5 in Maths and English so that we can more closely monitor their progress. Children’s progress is also monitored during the year through our target setting arrangements.Parents of any pupil at this school have the right of access to that pupil’s educational records.

Religious EducationWyberton is a foundation school which does not have affiliation to any religious denomination. The content of our RE is drawn largely from the study of Christianity in its many forms, this being the religious faith which has most influenced our culture. However, it is important that children be given some understanding of other religious beliefs and practices. This work has been planned to conform to the framework set up in the Lincolnshire County Council guidelines formulated in 1993.

Assemblies are a reflection of shared values. They are part of the preparation for life - an opportunity to explore and experience the spiritual and moral dimensions of life through the media of stories, drama, singing hymns and songs, music and quiet reflection.

An assembly is an act of worship because it is an expression of the life of the school and wider community and what is of worth in those communities. Other members of the community e.g. parents and the local policeman share assemblies. The local Rector attends regularly, introducing simple experiences of prayer and teaching from the Bible and of the Christian year from a believer’s point of view.

We believe that this broadly-based approach fairly reflects the Christian basis of our culture and society, giving the children sufficient information and experience to determine their own philosophy of life.

Parents have a right to withdraw their children from assemblies on religious grounds if they so wish.

Children with Special Needs

All children at some time have ‘special needs’ which may cause action to be taken which is solely appropriate for that child. It may be of an academic nature, related to a child’s studies, or it may be related to matters which are affecting a child’s performance in school (e.g. a separation or family bereavement). Parents play an important part in these circumstances and are relied upon to work with the school in a partnership which most benefits the child. Sometimes, for example when children appear regularly to be struggling when their peers are coping well, parents will be invited into school to discuss these concerns with their child’s class teacher. Usually, parents are well aware when their children have problems and are only too pleased to help. A course of action or scheme of work supported by the parents is often all that is required, but occasionally, the school is unable to deal satisfactorily with a particular child’s needs. If this happens, parents are further consulted and with their consent the child is ‘referred’. This means that a multi-disciplinary process begins which involves the child, the parents, the school, maybe an educational psychologist and medical authorities. At the end of this process and for significant cases, a ‘statement’ is sometimes issued which identifies the child’s needs. When such a statement is prepared, the LEA has a legal obligation to comply with it. Such statements are reviewed annually.

Gifted and Able Children

There are many definitions of a ‘gifted’ child, which are valid and none of which is exclusive. We endeavour to identify such children and to give them help to achieve their goals. Much of the work done in the classroom is differentiated, in order for each child to achieve at his or her own level, to present them with challenges and to ensure that they are ‘stretched’ academically.

Our aim is to ensure that all of our pupils are given the opportunity to achieve the highest levels of which they are capable.

13

HomeworkAt Key Stage 2 children are given regular homework in Maths and English as well as taking home their current reading book. Sometimes the work given will be project work. At Key Stage 1 all children take home their reading books and words to learn. We would like your co-operation in ensuring your children learn these. They will also receive homework in Literacy and Numeracy.

All children take their reading book home regularly. It is certainly an advantage if you can listen to your child read one or two pages and then discuss the story with them. Try to make this a pleasurable occasion rather than a chore. Children who are absent from school convalescing can be supplied with activities if parents make a request.

Provision for Sport

Each class has PE twice, with an average time of 2 hours per week. The focus of each lesson will vary but each child will cover gymnastics, dance, games, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. The only exceptions to this are the reception children as they have PE every day and cover gymnastics, games and dance. Swimming is taught at The Geoff Moulder Swimming Pool for children in Yrs 3, 4, 5 and 6.

As well as PE, we also offer a variety of sporting extra-curricular activities. This year we have clubs for tag rugby, football, gymnastics, rounders and netball. Our YR6 children have the chance to attend an outdoor sports and adventure residential.

Sporting Aims

The school aims are for all children to develop skill, coordination and stamina in a variety of different sporting activities. For those children who want to and are able, there is the opportunity of being involved in competitive sport with other schools.

Sex Education

Sex Education is not currently taught at Wyberton Primary. Children in YR6 of their education take part in a session, usually with our School Nurse, which covers growth and puberty. This talk usually happens during the Summer Term but may take place at any time in the academic year. They may be shown an age appropriate film as part of this session. Parents are invited to view the film first when they will have the opportunity to discuss the contents and ask questions about our approach. All material will be sensitively presented.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from this session if they so wish.

School Discipline

From the very early stage the teachers encourage and praise your children for their efforts. Children thrive on success and enjoy hearing and seeing comments made by their teacher about their work. Careful display of children’s work on walls of classrooms and other prominent places about the school encourages children to produce work of quality.

Parents are expected to play a significant role in developing their child’s positive attitude towards school and his/her work. Please seek to praise work you see at school when you visit. Talk about what is happening at school. We believe that when home and school co-operate fully then children can make the most of their education.

We appreciate that children do not develop at a constant rate and accept short term variations in the quality of work and performance level. Our concern is only when there is a prolonged deterioration. If this occurs then teachers express their disappointment and seek ways to encourage the child to improve. Most children respond as they like to be held high in their teacher’s esteem. Should unsatisfactory work continue we would contact parents.

Our attitude towards behavioural problems is similar. There is in place a detailed behaviour policy which sets out procedures, rewards and sanctions and this is applied consistently by all staff. Most children follow the examples of acceptable behaviour they see from others including the adults in the school. The School Council is working to involve the children in the decisions that may affect them and encouraging them to make suggestions of their own.

Children with persistently naughty behaviour will be denied privileges such as going out to play but it depends very much on our knowledge of the child. In the rare and unlikely event of severe cases of bad behaviour the Head Teacher would seek the co-operation of the parents and more serious action could occur.

We are proud of the behaviour of our children and receive many comments about their good behaviour. Our last OFSTED report said “Wyberton School children behave well, and the ethos and philosophy provide a consistent framework for learning, which is supported by staff, parents and governors”. We wish to maintain this reputation.

Exclusion of Pupils

Exclusion is a very serious step to take. No Head Teacher likes to exclude a pupil, but sometimes this is necessary if the pupil has been involved in a serious incident. In the unlikely event of your child being excluded you would be given a letter clearly explaining what had happened and why, and also a leaflet setting out your rights in the matter. (Circ 65/89)

The reasons for their exclusion and agreed conditions for their return would be discussed in a Return to School Interview with the Head Teacher, parents and child.

Health and Medicine

There is a very full system of care for your children both in health and personal terms. The care and wellbeing of your child are equally important to us as their academic achievement, as one cannot exist without the other. We involve many outside agencies to help us achieve our goal, for example, the School Nurse is involved when necessary. Whilst we can also call on specialists like Speech Therapists, Medical Staff, Educational Psychology Service etc.

The School Health Service exists for the benefit of you and your child and its aim is to ensure that every child is helped to reach his or her educational potential.

Administration of drugs/medicines in school

There are two types of cases as follows:

i) Where the child has some form of chronic illness such as diabetes, epilepsy, and asthma. We will always work with parents and medical staff to ensure safe access to medicines and ensure that children can take a full part in school life.

ii) Those where the child has a short term illness such as tonsillitis, chesty colds and earache.

With regard to (ii) children suffering from infections requiring treatment should not normally be in school until the course of treatment has been completed. Children are not permitted to bring medicine into school or self medicate and members of staff will not administer medicines in such cases. However, Head Teachers are encouraged to make facilities available for any parents who wish to come into school to treat their children and we shall be pleased to do so in cases where the family doctor has declared your child fit to attend school.

Occasionally children feel unwell at school and need to go home. Should anyone feel poorly, then we would contact parents to come and collect their child from school. Please ensure that our school office always has your most up to date contact details.

Attendance

Our school is committed to providing a quality education for all pupils. We believe that pupils can only benefit from the good education in our school through regular school attendance. We will, therefore, strive to achieve the maximum possible attendance for all pupils and we will make sure that any problems are identified and resolved quickly. This will be achieved by school staff, pupils, parents, carers and external agencies all working together in a team approach.

How parents can help give their child a good education:

Ensure that their children attend school regularly and that they arrive on time as is the parent’s legal responsibility.

Keep all medical appointments outside of school times. We accept that for hospital appointments this may not always be possible.

Take family holidays in times set aside for holidays i.e. 13 weeks each year which are outside term time.

Contact the school by 9:15am whenever their child is absent, giving details of the reason for the absence and the length of time the child will be away. The school telephone number is 01205 364797

Help their child prepare for the school day by ensuring that homework has been done and the child has everything he/she needs for the day ahead.

Attend Parents’ Consultation Evenings to discuss progress or problems and talk to the staff if there are any problems or changes in family circumstances which may affect the child.

Contact the school if problems arise which may keep their child away from school, so that the school can help.

Our attendance figures for 2016/2017 (latest available) were as follows:% of pupil sessions missed through absence 3.5% (‘Session' means half a day)

The national average for school attendance is 5% absence and this is the figure accepted by the government. Individual children who have an absence rate over 5% will be investigated by the our Attendance and Welfare Officer and information is passed to the local authority on a termly basis.

Children’s Absence from School

There are occasions in a child’s school life when it may be necessary to keep them at home as they are too ill to attend school. In the case of illness please notify the school by 9.15 a.m. of the morning they are ill and the likely length of absence. If a child does not arrive at school and we have not heard why that might be, office staff will ring you to make sure that your child has not gone missing. Other acceptable reasons for absence include visits to medical clinics, although the school ask that these are booked out of school hours where possible. The class teacher or school office should be notified in advance along with expected time of return after the appointment.

Legally it is for the Head Teacher to decide if an absence is authorised or unauthorised, and records have to be kept of each category for inspection purposes. Examples of unauthorised absences are: days out, birthdays, long weekends, looking after brothers and sisters and accompanying a parent or sibling to appointments.

Holidays

From the 1st September 2013 changes were made to the law which relates to parents/carers taking their children on holiday during term time. The change in legislation indicates that Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless they consider there to be exceptional circumstances. The amendment in the law removed all references to family holidays.

We know that Government research shows that there is a very strong link between regular school attendance and academic achievement. The Government advise that an attendance rate of less than 95%, in any one academic year, will have a detrimental effect on a child’s education.

Due to the above the Federation will no longer be granting parents/carers time off to take their children on holiday.

If you consider there are exceptional circumstances to support taking your child out of school a Request for Leave form should be completed and handed in at the school office. This must be supported by documentary evidence for our Attendance Officer to consider.

Absences during SAT’s and examination periods will not be authorised and all unauthorised absences will be reported to the Attendance and Welfare Officer.

If the school are concerned about your child’s attendance rate you will be notified and the appropriate actions taken to improve this. Ultimately the school reserves the right to contact Lincolnshire County Council who hold the powers to issues penalty notices (fines) and/or prosecute parents for failing to ensure their child’s regular attendance at school.

The Requests for Leave must be completed and returned to the school office prior to the period of absence; please give the school as much notice as possible of your request. The application will be considered carefully and we will notify you of the school’s decision within 10 working days. We strongly advise that no leave of absence is booked prior to receiving a decision from the school.

Charging Policy

School Trips and Visits

As a result of the Education Act, it is now not legal to charge for certain activities as they are part of the curriculum. It is, however, in order to ask parents for a voluntary contribution. The school reserves the right to cancel any trip or visit if insufficient funds are raised to cover costs.

If an activity takes place, all children are eligible to take part whether the parents have made a voluntary contribution or not. Those children whose parents have not made a voluntary contribution must not be treated differently in any way from those whose parents have.

A charge may be levied for optional extras (e.g. an activity outside school hours). Participation will be on the basis of parental choice and a willingness to meet such charges as are made.

Parents can be charged for board and lodging on residential visits, except in the cases of statutory remission where families receive family credit or income support. There will be no other remissions.

The school reserves the right to prevent a child taking part in an educational visit due to inappropriate behaviour as outlined in the Behaviour Policy. If there was a cost for the trip, parents will not necessarily receive a refund if the costs can’t be recovered by the school.

Design and Technology Materials

Where a child has used school purchased materials e.g. an electric motor or light bulb, to make a model and wishes to take the finished item home, a voluntary contribution to cover the cost of replacing the item may be requested in order that other children will have the opportunity to use the same sort of materials.

Out of School Activities

There are various out-of-school activities in which your child may wish to participate. Obviously these activities vary from time to time as they are dependent upon the voluntary help of the teachers or parents, and the season. A regular day and time is fixed for each activity so that parents are aware of the time that their child will leave school on that day. If it is after school a permission slip will need to be completed by parents. We will only cancel a club if absolutely necessary and with at least 24 hours notice. Exceptions to this would be due to Health and Safety reasons such as extreme weather conditions or a problem with the school buildings, when a club may be cancelled on that day due to possible school closure.

At the time of going to press the following clubs are offered:

Football

Traditional Board Games Club

Multi Sports Club

Taekwondo Club

French Club

Bee Club

Film Club

Story Time Club

Choir

Tag Rugby Club

These activities are occasions when children have the opportunity to develop interests and to mix with friends from other classes.

Road Safety

We consider road safety to be an important part of all children’s general education and they need to be aware of good practice in order to avoid potentially dangerous situations.

Children who walk to and from school will want to know where it is safe to cross the road. We have a Crossing Patrol situated on Saundergate Lane, to ensure children cross the road safely.

In order to reduce the risk of accidents to children at busy times (i.e. before and after school), we would appreciate that parents take note of the following.

Please DO:

- Meet your child by the school gate in front of the school if you wish to collect him/her after school.Children in Key Stage One will only be released to a known adult at the end of the school day.It is up to parents to decide if their child, once in Key Stage Two, is able to walk home from school themselves, or meet you outside of school premises. Teachers in Key Stage Two will see children safely out of the school building. To help keep our children safe, all children are asked to return immediately to the school building if they have arranged to meet you and you are not where your child expects you to be.

- Stay well away from the yellow zigzag lines if you deliver or collect your child in a car.

Please DO NOT:

- Park on the yellow zigzag lines in front of the school or in the school gate way.

- Park in front of the drives on Saundergate Lane.- Park on the double yellow lines.

Parental Involvement

There are many opportunities for parents to become involved in their children’s education. For most parents this will take the form of showing an interest in and providing support for their own children’s development as they progress thorough the school. Some parents feel that they wish to become more actively involved in school matters and there are several ways in which this can be accomplished:

School EventsThe school offers a varied range of activities to involve parents and these may change from year to year in order to fit in with the school plans. The kinds of events offered are Open Sessions, Curriculum Workshops such as those that take place in our special curriculum weeks i.e. Maths Week, Class assemblies, plays and performances, Sport Morning, Parent/Teacher Consultation Evenings and Coffee Mornings. This list is not exhaustive and merely a small sample of the ways we work with our parents.

Parent HelpersParental help is most welcome at school and is offered in many guises. Parents may assist when extra supervision is required (e.g. in the case of school trips or swimming). They may collaborate with the class teacher if they possess certain items, skills or specialist knowledge which is relevant to the children’s studies. Some parents enjoy helping small groups of children in the classroom in the course of their studies, while others might assist with the mounting and displaying of children’s work. In addition, parents who no longer have children in the school but who feel that they have a desire to work with children on a voluntary basis are also made very welcome. Some parent helpers come regularly; others volunteer their services as the need arises. Still others wait to be asked. If you fall into any of these categories, please let us know your strengths, skills and/or interests so that our children can further benefit from your interest and support. All volunteers will have CRB clearance before joining us in school. Helping in school is a wonderful way to find out about the education we offer your child and how you can further support your child at home.

‘Open Door’ Policy/Appointments

Parents are welcome to come into school to discuss their concerns as they relate to the education of their children. In order to avoid disappointment, please telephone the school in advance to make an appointment which is mutually convenient. As a school we value parents’ views and make every effort to keep parents informed of the effect that their contributions have upon the school as a whole.

Complaints Procedure

Wherever possible, concerns expressed by parents and others about the school curriculum or related matters will be dealt with in the first instance by informal discussion with teachers or the Head. However, there will be occasions when such concerns cannot be resolved informally and, under the terms of the 1988 Education Reform Act, the Governors have set up a formal complaints procedure which offers a readily accessible and clearly understood route through which complaints of this nature may be pursued further. A document setting out this procedure is available for inspection at the school and a copy can be given, if desired, to any person wishing to make a complaint under these arrangements.
