Al~ trae t --A nov el method of opt imum synthesis of planar R R R R l inkages for path generation is
presented here. The method allows the formulation of the problem as one of unconstrained nonlinear
least-square optimization. T his is achieved by (i) com puting the values of the input angle at the v arious
configurations, assoc iated with the given discrete set of trajectory points, separately from the op timization
iterations; ii) using the C artesian coordinates of the joint centers, in a reference configuration, as design
variables; and
iii)
applying the New ton-Gauss method w ith Householder reflections, damping, and
continuation. In th is way the number of design variables is equal to eight, regardless of the num ber o f
given trajectory points, and inequality constraints are avoided. Mo reover, problems of branching are
eliminated. The examples included here show attractive convergence properties.
I . I N T R O D U C T I O N
