Study the things a character says and does, and develop ideas about a character.

Notice patterns in the things a character does again and again, and come up with a big idea, or theory, about the character.

Write personal narratives where we tell the story through our main characters eyes (US!) exactly the way he or she experienced it.

Take stock in our writing so far and set goals for ourselves moving forward.

MATH Use estimation to solve multiplication and division problems

using numbers in the tens, hundreds, and thousands. Review material from Unit 1 (factors, multiples, place value,

estimation, prime numbers, exponents, multiplication and division.

Readers develop theories and make predictions about characters as they get to know them.

Readers use theories they have developed and read deeper to test those theories.

Writers select their narrative topics and start to construct what the story is, "really" about.

Pay close attention to how the secondary characters in a story help the main character along his or her journey.

Pay attention to how the main character is tested and notice how the character reacts during the climax of a story.

Imagine future events or remember past events that connect to what students' personal narratives are really about.

Determine what they want to say about the main character's struggle or journey in their personal narratives, and write an ending that shows this.

Recognizing how authors change text structures throughout their writing of complex fiction. Developing strategies for dealing with this tricky work. 

Literary essay work continues! Adding transitions to spiff up our literary essays and have them

read smoothly.  Finalizing our Panyee FC literary essay.  Selecting a text to write an independent literary essay on. 

MATH Unit 3 - Fractions Review and introduction to unit Skill: How to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike

denominators.  Strategy: How to identify like and unlike fractions by comparing

 HIGHLIGHTS 1. Science - Round 4 - starts this week. Session 1 is on Wednesday, 3/15 and Session 2 is on Friday, 3/17. This is our last round of science before moving on to our rocketry unit.  2. Asia projects that have been displayed on our bulletin board will be sent home this week. Keep your eye out for our new bulletin board display.   

3. Digital Book Clubs launch this week as we start reading historical fiction targeting immigration. This integrates our reading, writing, and social studies content areas.   READING &WRITING

Digital Book Clubs are introduced. Book clubs become familiar with their roles and responsibilities.  Research-based argument essay work continues.   Writers integrate all skills taught thus far and begin working on a

research topic of their choosing.  Pesticides essays get published.

MATH Unit 4 - Quiz 2 Friday 3/17. Unit 4 - Angles continues. How to use protractors to measure and compare angle values.   Get all quizzes signed and return them to school, please.

Science - Rotation 4 - Sessions 1 & 2 are this week. Please make sure you hand in your homework to your science teacher. 

Social Studies - Immigration unit continues as we discuss the big ideas about immigration and start asking thought provoking questions about life as an immigrant.

  WHAT'S UP IN 5RW?Week of March 20, 2017

 Happy first week of spring! 

 HIGHLIGHTS 1. Science - Round 4 -  Session 2 is on April 3rd. This is our last round of science before moving on to our rocketry unit.  2. ELA State Testing is next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.   3. Digital Book Clubs meet this week as we start reading historical fiction targeting immigration. This integrates our reading, writing, and social studies content areas.  4. Capstone project work begins this week! We start to analyze how questions can be asked in different ways.   READING &WRITING

Digital Book Clubs meet and discuss their new historical fiction books. 

Book club members complete their first round of club responsibilities. 

Research-based argument essay work continues.  

Writers integrate all skills taught thus far and continue working on a topic of their choosing. 

Pesticides essays get published.

MATH Unit 4 - Quiz 3 Friday 3/24. Unit 4 - Angles continues. How to recognize and name angles in different geometric

shapes.    Get all quizzes signed and return them to school, please. 

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

Social Studies - Push - Pull factors for different countries are identified. Patterns are established and discussed.

Immigration WebQuest done independently.  Blogging as Do Now and Morning Work continues.

WHAT'S UP IN 5RW?Week of April 3, 2017

 HIGHLIGHTS 1. Science - Round 4 -  Sessions 2 & 3 are on Monday, April 3rd and Wednesday, April 5th this week. This is our last round of science before moving on to our rocketry unit.   2. Digital Book Clubs meet this week on Tuesday 4/4, Thursday 4/6 and Friday 4/7.  Make sure you are keeping track of your reading goals and club jobs.   3. April Geography project outline sent home on Monday, 4/3. Please choose your South American country by Tuesday, 4/4. Look over the project outline and due dates.  4. Capstone project work continues this week. Look out for any Capstone homework so you are meeting project due dates.  5. Have a wonderful Spring recess! See you when we get back on the 17th.   READING &WRITING

Digital Book Clubs meet on Tuesday and Friday this week to discuss their historical fiction books. 

Book club members complete another round of club new responsibilities. 

Research based argument essay work comes to a close. All essays will be published by Friday, 4/7.  

MATH  

Unit 4 - Our study of Angles continues. Review all concepts and skills taught about angles this week for

homework. Use your math notebook to help you study.  Angles unit test - Thursday, 4/6. Extra time on Friday, 4/7 to

complete.  Get all quizzes signed and return them to school, please. 

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE

Immigration Unit - Push/Pull Factor Stations continue. Immigration "waves" are identified and

geographical/historical events analyzed that impacted these waves.

Immigration unit read aloud continues.

DIGITAL LITERACY & CAPSTONE

Coding continues with sessions 2 & 3 with Ms. Torrey.  Blogging as Do Now and Morning Work continues.  Exploring the personal blogs of classmates is encouraged

as we learn how to leave constructive and meaningful comments.

WHAT'S UP IN 5RW?Week of April 17, 2017

 HIGHLIGHTS 

1. Science - Round 4 -  Session 4 is on Tuesday, April 18th this week. Please make sure you are prepared for science and have completed all your homework. Hand in your homework to your science teacher. This is our last round of science before moving on to our rocketry unit.   2. Digital Book Clubs meet this week on Tuesday 4/18.  Make sure you are keeping track of your reading goals and are prepared by doing your club jobs.   3. April Geography project notes were due Monday 4/17. You should be working on your project product. The final due date is Monday, 5/1. Look over the project outline and due dates.  4. We have 2 assemblies this week! On Tuesday we will attend the Midnight Run assembly and on Friday we will attend the Earth Day assembly.   READING &WRITING

students walk in the shoes of an immigrants voyage to America.

Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty - Importance and functions defined and explored. 

Immigration Bridge   to America  read aloud continues.

DIGITAL LITERACY & CAPSTONE

Earth Day News ELA article responses written as individual blogs. 

Writing group based digital essays for historical fiction digital book clubs. 

Capstone - Identifying sub questions for research topics that are part of the larger question. 

Capstone - How researchers use the Curriculum Wheel to narrow general topic themes to specific inquiry questions.

 HIGHLIGHTS 1. Science - Round 4 -  Session 5 is on Wednesday, April 27th this week. Please make sure you are prepared for science and have

completed all your homework. Hand in your homework to your science teacher. This is our last round of science before moving on to our rocketry unit.   2. Trip to MoMa this Friday, April 28th. Please make sure you have handed in your permission slips!!  3. April Geography project notes were due Monday 4/17. You should be working on your project product. The final due date is Monday, 5/1. Look over the project outline and due dates.  4. Middle school visit to Greenacres is this Friday. You will learn more in preparation for the transition to 6th grade. :-)   READING &WRITING
