3G—What is it?

Check your e-mail, surf the web, and send digital pictures—all on your mobile phone.

That is the promise of “3G,” third-generation wireless networks that can transfer data faster than a traditional 56-kilobyte-per-second dial-up modem.

The new technology has been unveiled only recently in the United States. Service providers Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless are touting the new technology and its capabilities even though it is only available in some markets. Carriers such as Cingular Wireless and Sprint PCS have spent billions of dollars on upgrading their networks in preparation for 3G.

But will consumers dial into the new service and pay the extra cost carriers will charge to get information such as movie times on their cell phones?

Analysts say consumers will eventually sign up for data services but those with high expectations will initially be disappointed with 3G’s launch this year.
