• ARL libraries reported spending more than $228 million on electronic resources.
• ARL libraries reported a total of $21,470,716 in additional funds spent on their behalf through a centrally funded consortium for purchasing electronic products and services.
• ARL libraries reported spending more than $13.1 million on document delivery/ interlibrary loan services.
• Expenditures for electronic serials have increased by 171% since the 1999-2000 survey, and by more than 1800% since they were first reported, in 1994-95 (see line chart).
• In every year since 1992-93, average expenditures on electronic resources have increased at least twice as fast, and in some cases up to six times faster, than average library materials expenditures (see bar graph).

ARL Supplementary Survey2003-04 Data Elements
– Number of / Expenditures for Networked Electronic Resources– Electronic journals purchased– Electronic “full-text” journals purchased– Electronic journals not purchased– Electronic reference sources– Electronic books – Use of Networked Electronic Resources and Services– Number of virtual reference transactions– Does your library offer federated searching across networked electronic
resources?– Number of logins (sessions) to networked electronic resources– Number of queries (searches) in networked electronic resources– Number of items requested in networked electronic resources– Number of virtual visits – Library Digitization Activities– Number and Size of Library Digital Collections– Use of Library Digital Collections– Direct cost of digital collections construction and management– Volumes Held Collectively
www.arl.org
Number of / Expenditure for Networked Electronic Resources
• Number of / expenditures for electronic journals purchased.– Free-with-print - Count number but not cost?– Embargoed journals - Count cost but not number?
• Number of electronic “full-text” journals purchased.– Previously, full-text distinction was ability to browse;
now, not reliable– Solution: ARL will provide a list of non-browse-able
titles that meet this criteria to ensure consistent data collection
www.arl.org
Use of Networked Electronic Resources & Services
• Tracking logins, searches & queries– Dependent on publishers, vendors for data– E-Metrics prepares institutions to collect and manage
data that is provided– 2003-04: ask participants to distinguish between data
provided for journals and/or databases in footnotes
• Virtual reference transactions– Process for tracking transactions varies - dedicated
software vs. counting email
www.arl.org
Library Digitization Activities
• Definition of digital materials expanded to include items converted from other formats or “born-digital” items
• Challenges to defining digital “collection”?– Items grouped dynamically, temporarily– Items added to library independently of collection
development plan - Institutional repository– Items more granular than journals or books - learning
objects, data sets
• Difficult to identify digitization costs because personnel, equipment fills multiple roles in library
www.arl.org
Volumes Held Collectively
• Data element suggested by ARL Statistics & Measurement Committee
• Defining criterion: The library has devoted financial resources for the purchase of these items and is taking responsibility for their availability through participation in a cooperative that supports shared ownership.
• Included in Supplementary Statistics 2003-04
