From the Principal Dear Parents/Caregivers, Students and Staff, Trade School for the Future Building Completion It is exciting to see the new Trade School for the Future Building almost completed. The final tidying up is being completed this week and we hope to take possession in the next two weeks so that we can furnish the room and have it ready for use in term 3. This will help to alleviate the loss of the PE transportable in terms of numbers of rooms. Our Apprenticeship Broker Mr Sam Ricci will move into the office space and students will be invited to visit him regarding apprenticeship preparation. A new Numeracy and Literacy course will also be taught during semester 2, in the new classroom. Mr Neil Muggleton will be coordinating the IT aspects of these courses. Ms. Sally Hill will oversee these activities and continue to promote courses towards Certificate III and VET courses. Assisting students to gain the most appropriate apprenticeship pathway is an important part of the work of our Trade School team and of our course counselling process in term 3. Working with industry partners and TAFE After a significant amount of work both within our school and across the DECS, East region secondary schools, we have submitted our joint application for a Trade Training Centre. This first phase of our round three, federal government submission includes three schools. Open Access College, Norwood Morialta and Charles Campbell. CCSS has applied for a “shed” and equipment to offer Certificate III Automotive Mechanical Technology and Certificate III Engineering (mechanical trade). Through working closely with TAFE, course providers and industry partners we are able to offer students access to even more courses leading to Certificate III, apprenticeships and TAFE and university entry. Understanding about industry helps students with their career decisions. Thanks go to our industry partners who helped make this a reality:

• Caroma Dorf Plumbing Supplies • Codan Pty Ltd • PEER • Bianco Construction Supplies • TAFE SA • AITEC • Australian Industry Group

Selective Entry Arts Program Auditions for our 2011 Year 8 Selective Entry Performing Arts class occurred on Tuesday 1st June. We were impressed with the high quality of applicants and the staff involved in the auditions appreciated the contributions made by the students on the day. Results have been posted to families. We look forward to another cohort of outstanding and talented performers in 2011. SAFETY ON THE ROADS From time to time we remind students and their families of the importance of safety. Children are not always as observant as they need to be on our roads and this may lead to injury. Please read Gabe’s article on the next page and use the designated crossings with lights and signage. International Assembly On Thursday 20th May we celebrated living in a global environment and our International Program at CCSS. Students performed a range of international dances and ceremonies including the acknowledgement of the original owners, the Kaurna people, our senior boys showed their prowess doing the Haka, students demonstrating Spanish dancing skills and a glimpse of “it takes two”. CCSS celebrated having over 80 international students who have come to our school to gain an Australian education. We celebrated our multi-cultural student and staff population representing over 60 different cultural groups. International foods were sold to students during lunch time. Our school value of “inclusion – valuing diversity, respecting the unique contribution of everyone’s cultural backgrounds and beliefs” was highlighted at the assembly. At CCSS we value inclusion! Exams As we near the end of semester 1, that is the half way mark for our school year, those in years 10 – 12 have their mid year exams. I wish all students the success and the best results commensurate with their hard work. Good luck for exams! Work Experience for year 10 students will be conducted in week 9, 15th–19th June. Work Experience for Engineering Pathways Students will be in week 10, 22nd – 26th June. I hope every student gains valuable insight into their work placements and learns more about the world of work. Happy long weekend Chris Stokes Principal

Premier’s Reading Challenge - Start Now

Year 10 Mid Year Exams / Year 10 Work Experience

Charles Campbell Secondary School was one of the outstanding schools in South Australia in 2009. We were invited to attend the Premier’s Reading Challenge Reception meeting at the Allen Scott Auditorium at the Hawke Centre University of South Australia on Friday 20th November 2009. Our school was represented by Courtney Dunsmore and Maitri Patel, accompanied by Ms Hahn and Miss Maitianos. We had a few speakers that were very interesting including Premier Mike Rann, Phil Cummings and Mem Fox, who read one of her wonderful books. We are hoping that in 2010 we can increase the number of students who complete the reading challenge. In 2010 the Premier’s Challenge goes from the first day you come back to school until the 3rd of September 2010. The year 8 and 9 students read a total of 12 books, four of the books are from the Premier’s Reading Challenge list and eight are their own choice. The year 10, 11 and 12 students complete 12 books of their own choice and pass up the list to their English /ES L / Literacy teacher or the Resource Centre staff before 3rd September 2010. The students will receive their award soon after the closing date. Courtney Dunsmore (904)

This is a warning to all students to be aware of the traffic on and off the road. To look for motor vehicles when crossing the road, especially main roads like Newton and Gorge Road. Use the crossings to avoid a traffic collision and harm to any of the students that attend Charles Campbell Secondary School and Campbelltown Primary School.

I am telling you this because there was an accident between a car and a student who attends Campbelltown Primary School. We cannot control the motorists but we advise the people of Charles Campbell and Campbelltown schools to be cautious when using the road and walkways. To avoid this happening again. Gabe Young (906)

Year 10 students undertake mid year exams in the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE). These exams occurED in students’ timetabled double lessons, during the week beginning Monday 8 June and concluding Friday 11 June 2010. Year 10 mid year exam results are referred to in Personal Learning Plan tasks and the upcoming course counselling events. Year 10 students are participating in Work Experience placements as part of their Personal Learning Plan activities and to gain a valuable

insight into the world of work beyond the school setting. Students are expected to undertake a minimum of four days Work Experience (due to the Queen’s Birthday public holiday), during next week, Tuesday 15 June - Friday 18 June 2010. Any placements organised outside these dates need to be negotiated through the Year 10 Management Team. If you have any queries regarding the Work Experience placement, please contact Julie Shillingford on 8337 6345. Laura Coonan, Assistant Principal Year 10

Cyberbullying, Harassment and Online Safety Cyberbullying, Harassment and Online Safety is the number one issue compromising the safety of our students in school.

What can actually happen when young people experience cyberbullying: • Receiving malicious text messages

anonymously • Having emails you privately sent to one

person be sent to others • Receiving threatening emails • Receiving hundreds of demeaning emails or

texts in one day from a group • Publishing photos of you on the web without

your permission and sometimes digitally altered

• Setting up websites designed to specifically humiliate and for others to vote on aspects of your appearance

• Being abused in instant messaging sites • Being impersonated using a website or fake

email address.

Cyberbullying is not just the same as the bullying experienced by generations in the past.

More young people are prepared to cyberbully than face to face bully. Many surveys admit that a high percentage of teenagers bully via phone or on the net.

Why do so may young people cyberbully? • Partly because anonymity is easy to achieve

and so risks for the ‘bully’ decrease. • Partly because many young people don’t

recognise cyberbullying behaviour as ‘real’ bullying.

• Partly because of the number of hours young people spend cybercommunicating.

Cyberbullying can occur in any place where there is phone and net access. Cyberbullying causes psychological damage. With the use of the net, bullies can provide malicious information to people worldwide rather than just a circle of friends.

Cyberbullies can disseminate visual, verbal and auditory abusive messages easily, quickly and at any time.

Impersonation is simple and frequent. Cyberbullying has the potential to have more long lasting effects than other forms of bullying.

Cyberbullying involves potentially permanent records.

For these reasons outlined we need to pay specific attention to this issue. We can not and should not underestimate the potential impact this issue has on our young people.

WEBSITES for Support www.cybersmart.gov.au

“Most of us have experienced bullying in one form or another. At this age of adolescence there is nothing more important than fitting in. Bullying leaves its victims afraid and always worried about what’s coming next. As they internalise the blame, to see the problem as of their own making, it affects their feelings of self-worth. They can’t concentrate. Only those affected by bullying can really comprehend the slow, grinding worry and insecurity that takes over your life…….”

CCSS Student comments on Bullying • “I learnt that everyone can get pulled into

bullying and that technology can sometimes be harmful and you should be careful about what you put on the internet”

• “I learnt that bullying is not just about hitting and punching. It also involved swearing, stealing, taking and putting pressure on other people. It is really bad!”

• “From watching the show, I learned that everyone can get caught up in bullying and that everyone should try to stay out of it or help the victim. It made me realise what bullying can lead to, everyone can get hurt. It can be terrible.”

• “When you bully people you think you’re tough but you damage other people’s lives and your actions can scar them for life. You can destroy your own life by getting yourself involved in more serious events.”

If you are keen to hear more and are interested in this issue please indicate whether you would come to an organised parent evening workshop. I would / would not be interested in attending a Parent Information Workshop on Cyberbullying at CCSS. Students visited the Port and engaged with South Australian history Recently the ISEC (Intensive Secondary English Course) class, comprising Korean and Chinese students, travelled to Port Adelaide for a full day excursion with two of their teachers, Heather Barrett and Maria Kvopka. Experiential learning is an excellent method for increasing vocabulary and much classroom work afterwards also develops the syntax of English, so excursions such as this are invaluable. It was a grey day after much rain and we were fortunate to see some blue sky. Port Adelaide Maritime Museum offered a brilliant opportunity for a relatively low price per student. We enjoyed a trip on the Port River to see dolphins, a close examination of a lighthouse and an introduction to maritime history within the museum. We were lucky to have a volunteer speak to the students and allow them to interact with the replica ketch Active II.

Heather Barrett, Teacher

Here, the students were able to lower and raise a sail, load and unload cargo and examine the galley, hold and cabin. The trip on the boat allowed students to see a working port – large container ships with gantries and conveyor belts to load cargo, and a manufacturing plant from Adelaide Brighton Cement.

Prior to the excursion language work was done around future continuous tense, and afterwards of course it was past tense! A thank you letter to the volunteer speaker and recount work completed this valuable learning experience.

Sports Round Up This term has seen a variety of teams and individuals represent Charles Campbell in sport. Term 2 Vista sports have begun with our team playing well and on track to make the finals again. The girls are working hard under the watchful eye of Coach Tayla Ley a year 10 student. We also have Knock Out Netball competing in the state wide competition. The Open girls have played and didn’t make it past the first round. They did beat Heathfield getting the upper hand over a past staff member who is now teaching there. The year 8/9 girls KO team is yet to play and hopefully they can maintain their winning run. Soccer has again been strongly supported with 5 a side teams and KO teams from years 8 to 12. The Open boys 5 a side team played in the Vista zone carnival and finished 3rd qualifying for the state finals on the 1st June. The year 10 boys play on the 4/6 and with luck they can bring the trophy back to make it 2 years in a row. The 11 a side KO teams have been playing with the Open boys competing in pool A. The round 1 match was against Underdale with the game finishing in a 1 all draw. The second game again at home, CCSS played Adelaide and fought hard. Unfortunately Adelaide had too many strong players and defeated CCSS 5 goals to 3. The final game is played against Woodville at the end of this term. The 8/9 boys played their games at CCSS and were beaten in both games not making it to the

next round. The open girls play on 31/5 and have had training sessions. Their behaviour both on and off the field was outstanding even when other teams did not play clean Soccer. They won one game and lost the other and did not make it through to the second round. Well done girls on representing the school in a positive way.

Basketball was represented by the open boys and girls. The open girls played Norwood Morialta. The girls played well but Norwood was too strong. The open boys played Heathfield away and were hoping to re-live their glory days of winning the year 10 boys KO 2 years ago. They have all grown a bit and used their height to overpower Heathfield well, by 10 points. Their second round game will be played by the end of term 2 and they are looking like making it further. Charles Campbell nominated Touch teams this

year in open boys and girls and 8/9 boys. All the students demonstrated team work and commitment and had a great day. The other school on the day were too strong and out scored us on the day. We were also represented at the Interschool Cross Country by a small number of students. Tom Hollitt raced in the U/16 boys and finished 8th overall, we also had 3 vision impaired students race in the students with disability race. Daniel Vuni finished 3rd with the other boys all finishing in the top 10. It was an outstanding effort from all the boys with some being invited to the state cross country trials.

The Senior School sports events have seen the year 12s win the Touch and the score now stands at 1 event each. The next event is Volleyball to be played on Tuesday of week 10 with the final 2 events held in term 3. The Pat O’Brien shield will be presented at the year 12 assembly in term 4 to the overall winning year level.

With plenty of sport still to come there are plenty of opportunities for students to get involved. Listen out for the notices or speak with any of the PE teachers. Emails are also sent to your school email address. Stay tuned and get involved in the excitement.

Media Project Congratulations to Jacob Butler-Bowdon for his highly successful Media project – designing a web site for a local business. See http://www.kmcandelabras.com to see Jacob’s design. He received really great feedback from the company and he is a role model for other Media students wanting to develop entrepreneurial skills. The company has offered Jacob a part time job updating and developing the site.

Photo of Jacob at the Whiteboard showing his web site Interactive White Boards (IWB) In the last week we have installed twelve new interactive white boards and there are many excited staff and students beginning to explore new approaches to teaching and learning. The new boards are the next generation of IWB with ultra short throw projectors and two students can work at the board at once. New Laptop Trolleys Eight trolleys with sixteen laptop computers each are now being used very effectively in the Resource Centre, Maths, Science and Arts areas of the school. These are part of the federal government Digital Education revolution allocation – with more to come over the next year and a half. The wireless network that was installed last year is really helping move the school forward with all laptops accessing the network and internet. New computers New desktop computers for three labs have recently been installed with more to come in the Tech Studies area and the new Trade School for the Future building which is now almost completed. These are very exciting developments for our school – and a great time to be in education! Jim Edson Coordinator, ICT Across the Curriculum and Whole School ICT Management

Year 8 Camp - Shiloh Hills

Year 12 Report

In week four, the 10th-14th May, 140 Year 8 students attended the Shiloh Hills Christian Retreat Campsite. The campsite is at Ironbank in the picturesque Adelaide Hills. Upon arrival the students were allocated their sleeping quarters and settled in for a fun two day adventure. Before lunch we set off to the Pioneer Hut, a short distance from the camp, to eat our lunch and from there we made our way up Prayer Mountain along a track and arrived back at camp.

Tea was delicious, followed by a night walk and games in the evening. The students snuggled down and then in the morning arose to a brisk, fresh environment and a hearty breakfast. More fun and organised team games continued through to lunch, when they sadly packed their bags for the return bus trip to Adelaide. A tiring and fun experience was enjoyed by all. My sincere thanks to all of the staff who supervised the students over the week, great job.

Term 2 has been a busy term for the Senior School and it is only going to get busier with exams around the corner. Students have been issued with a timetable for their exams. They will commence on Friday 11th June. Subject teachers will be discussing the exam procedures with their students during subject class time. If your son/daughter is absent from an exam please provide a doctors certificate and contact Julie Shillingford on 8337 6844 so alternative arrangements to be made. It is important that students maintain a school/study/work life balance during this time. The Year 12/13 Formal for 2010 will be held on Friday 2nd July at the Intercontinental Hotel (Hyatt – Adelaide). The formal is for our current year 12/13 students and approved partners only. It is expected that invited partners have followed the process and have handed in photocopy identification to Julie Shillingford with parent contact telephone numbers. The CCSS student must make an appointment with me to gain approval. Please be advised in advance that approval is NOT automatic. More information will be explained to the students at a Year 12 assembly.. Deposits of $40 are due on the 10th June. After a few hiccups, it is wonderful to see that we have the sea of red in the school for our Year 12 students. There must be no alterations or additions, such as hoods, sewn onto the jumper. These will be removed. Thank you to the students who assisted in the design and for your cooperation in this matter.

We extend our congratulations to Michael Liapis on his selection by the National Scouting Soccer Department to join an elite program. His playing ability and academic skills helped him win this position. His scholarship will be with an American College where his talents in soccer and education will co-exist in a full time professional environment. Michael, on behalf of CCSS we wish you well in your endeavour to play professional football and we will certainly be following your movements. All the best. Heather Makris Assistant Principal
