COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR INVESTIGATING DISEASE. IMPACTING HEALTHCARE.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology (LMP) occupies a special place at the interface between basic biomedical science and healthcare. This location provides an incredible opportunity to make major advances in understanding of the causes and mechanisms of disease and translating new knowledge into improved health outcomes for patients and populations.

As part of the implementation of the LMP Strategic Plan 2010-2015, we held the “LMP Tagline Challenge”, in which the entire department was invited to submit suggestions for a concise and memorable turn of phrase that embodies the mission and aspirations of LMP. I was personally overwhelmed by the response—over 200 entries were submitted for a chance to win an iPad 3. One cannot help but be impressed by the level of engagement shown by our faculty,

Excellence & Innovation in Academic Laboratory Medicine & Pathology ● ww.lmp.facmed.utoronto.ca 2

Starting this fall, each LMP faculty member who is promoted to Full Professor will deliver a “Professorial Lecture” to the whole department, as part of the LMP Weekly Seminar Series held on Monday afternoons at 4 p.m. I guarantee you will be impressed by the incredible accomplishments of these individuals and their fascinating stories that resulted in each of them achieving an international reputation with distinction.

LMP does not take the summer off. Our Summer Student program is well subscribed and students get the opportunity to work with exceptional faculty on a wide range of projects. The LMP Summer Student Research Day is scheduled for August 16th and everyone is invited to attend and view the posters and interact with the students who have worked so hard over their term. I know you will be amazed by the quantity and quality of research occurring throughout the department and the caliber of students.

Investigating Disease. Impacting Healthcare. LMP focuses on real solutions to real problems. That’s what makes our department such a special place and thanks to all who contribute to advancing our mission.

With best wishes for the summer.

EDUCATION

RESIDENTS AND FELLOWS SECTION Postgraduate Trainee Research Day LMP would like to congratulate participants of the sixth annual LMP Postgraduate Research Day. Led by the Director of Postgraduate Research, Dr. George Yousef, the day celebrated the achievements of LMP’s residents and post-doctoral fellows.

Excellence & Innovation in Academic Laboratory Medicine & Pathology ● ww.lmp.facmed.utoronto.ca 6

The theme of the day was “Personalized Medicine: A New Landscape for Laboratory Medicine Practice”. With 32 poster and 6 podium presentations and almost 100 attendees, the event emphasized LMP’s broad scope and solid track record of sustained excellence in research encompassing basic, translational and clinical science.

Key highlights of the day included a presentation by keynote speaker George J. Netto, MD, Director of Surgical Pathology Molecular Diagnostics at Johns Hopkins University, an engaging video about the future of pathology and a new poster presentation format which allowed students to interact directly with a small panel of judges. Students were further engaged in an open discussion with departmental Chair, Dr. Richard Hegele and the Program Director of Anatomical Pathology, Dr. Simon Raphael.

The winners of this year’s Research Day are listed on page 2.

The breadth and depth of the research was impressive. The first place winner of the clinical award, Michael Sidiropoulos, presented on the ability to more accurately distinguish between malignant melanoma and benign moles using fluorescence microscopy. Nicole White, first place winner of the research award, presented on the potential earlier and more accurate diagnosis of kidney cancer by studying dysregulated miRNAs.

The success of LMP’s poster presentations is clearly evident by the number of those accepted at national and international conferences. LMP is confident that presenters at this year’s event will achieve the same success and that their work will provide a strong foundation for future research.

We would like to thank all of the LMP trainees who participated in the event by giving oral and poster presentations. A diverse range of research topics was represented, and without them, the day would certainly not have been possible. We would also like to thank the faculty who served as judges as well as our sponsors, Springer and Ideal Scientific, who contributed generously to our event.

We would also like to thank Paula Nixon for her organizational and logistical support from the initial planning stages to the event itself.

We would like to call for volunteers to participate in next year’s planning committee. Interested individuals should contact [email protected].

Sincerely, The 2012 Postgraduate Research Day Committee including Clarissa Cassol, Lorna Mirham, Ghassan Allo, Ingo Von Both, Ron Francis, Joerg Schwock, Rosalind Silverman, Nicole White, Julie Shaw, Jennifer Shea, Paula Nixon and George Yousef.

New Chief Resident On behalf of Dr. Simon Raphael, the Anatomical Pathology Residency Program would like to congratulate and welcome Dr. Will Chen as the 2012 Chief Resident.

We would like to thank Dr. Michael Sidiropoulos for all of his hard work over the past year and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

HOSPITAL REPORTS

HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN Announcement Filling the gaps: New diagnostic tool reflects today’s diverse Canadian paediatric population

When a child undergoes blood tests to diagnose a specific medical condition, obtaining accurate test results is the key to help determine the best treatment options and provide the necessary care. Accurate reference values provide the “normal” result for a healthy child in the general population and until now, these reference values in Canada have had significant demographic gaps, and much of the current data is outdated.

Over the past four years, Dr. Khosrow Adeli, Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine at SickKids and Professor, LMP, has led a national project to develop a new, comprehensive database of 40 biochemical markers in an ethnically-diverse Canadian paediatric population, involving nearly 2,200 healthy children and teens. This Laboratory Initiative on Paediatric Reference Intervals (CALIPER) Project is now available to hospitals and paediatricians, and will soon be available to the general public. This new national database is reported in a recent online publication of Clinical Chemistry. Next steps will include testing for an additional 30 biochemical markers, and using transference studies to run tests on different equipment in various hospitals across Canada, to help ensure consistent results, regardless of the patient’s geographic location.

For more information about the CALIPER Project, or to participate, visit www.caliperproject.com
