In American Studies, students covered materials and attended WWU lectures on Native Americans, Immigration and Diversity. They also took their American Studies’ mid-term exam. In Functions, both classes practiced their English through two WWU-class exchanges. One exchange was with an International Business class, where they learned about deep American culture; the other exchange was with an Interpersonal Communications class, where they learned more about verbal and non-verbal communication. In TOEIC, students continued working on building their TOEIC-related vocabulary, toured the WWU Library and conducted an interview with a librarian, checked out graded readers to build their extensive reading skills and practiced online listening exercises. In Career Exploration, students learned how volunteering can help build experience for their future careers and visited local businesses in small groups to take tours and ask the staff questions about their career and the business (airport, hotel, childcare center, etc). They also began creating American-style resumes in the computer lab and interviewed some Japanese guest speakers who work for Air Canada, a company that organizes Toyota Production System tours and a seafood trading company.

Students have had a busy month in their classes and with class activities.

In American Studies, students covered materials and attended WWU lectures on Native Americans, Immigration and Diversity. They also took their American Studies’ mid-term exam.

The holiday season is here, and WWU has had plenty of events and activities to celebrate! The IPAs have brought students costume shopping, carved pumpkins, and hosted a Halloween Spooktacular party in the residence halls with other WWU students. On Halloween day, the office hosted a costume contest, and staff brought the students to experience a Haunted House.

At the beginning of the month, students also met their Campus and Community Friends, giving them deeper connections to the WWU and Bellingham communities. Some of our Community Friends have been volunteering with our program for years! The community volunteers give AUAP students a peak into different perspectives of American culture, and play a valuable role in the WWU AUAP.

Finally, WWU AUAP started an Instagram account this month! Please follow us @wwuauap to learn more about Bellingham, WWU, and the program.
