Maths and literacy The Enormous Turnip activities Week 1: Day 1 Begin the session by handing out The Enormous Turnip Role cut outs so that the child has each character ready to act out the story. Speak the story below to the children, encouraging them to act out their part by standing by the turnip and pretending to pull. “Once upon a time, there was a little old man who planted some turnip seeds. One of the turnips grew, and grew and grew until it was so big it was ready to be pulled out. The old man tried to pull the turnip out by himself. He pulled the turnip but it would not come out.” Ask the children how many people are pulling the turnip. Confirm it is one. Ask one of the children to find the number 1 and put it on the washing line. Today will be focussing on the oneness of one- Go for a number hunt for where you can find the number 1 in your environment- e.g on door numbers. Collect one of different objects- one teddy bear, one car etc. Challenge your child to write the number 1. Week 1: Day 2 Continue the story: “The turnip was just too big for 1 person to pull, so he asked his wife to help.” Ask the children how many people would be pulling if the little old man’s wife came to help. Confirm that there would be two people, as one more than one is two. Ask one of the children to find the number 2 and put it on the washing line next to the number 1. Repeat number hunt from the previous day. Ask children to think of different ways to make 2 e.g. 1 + 1 = 2, 2 + 0 = 2, 0 + 2 = 2 Week 1 : Day 3 Continue the story: “The little old man and his wife pulled and pulled the turnip but it still wouldn’t come out. They asked a boy to help them.” Ask the children how many people would be pulling the turnip if the boy joined the man and woman. Confirm that one more than two is three, so there would be three people pulling the turnip. Ask one of the children to find the number 3 and put it on the washing line next to the number 2. Repeat number hunt from the previous day. Ask children to think of different ways to make 3 e.g. 1 + 2 = 3, 3 + 0 = 3 etc Week 1 : Day 4 Continue the story: “The little old man, his wife and the boy pulled and pulled and pulled the turnip but it still wouldn’t come out. They asked a girl to help them.” Ask the children how many people would be pulling the turnip if the girl joined the man, woman and boy. Confirm that one more than three is four, so there would be four people pulling the turnip. Ask one of the children to find the number 4 and put it on the washing line next to the number 3. Repeat number hunt from the previous day. Ask children to think of different ways to make 4 e.g. 1 + 3 = 4 , 2 + 2 = 4 Week 3: Day 5
