2014ANNUAL REPORT

Expectations--great expectations--are what have made the Washington state wine industry what it is today. They are what the drive us toward our great potential for tomorrow.

For over a dozen years the WashingtonWine Industry Foundation (WWIF) hashelped to meet your expectations andstrengthen the future of the Washingtonwine industry by advancing education, research and leadership.

“ WWIF brings the industry together by focusing on identied needs - scholarships, special projects, etc - and serves as an eective fundraising vehicle to achieve these goals.”

–Carol Munro, Ste Michelle Wine Estates

MEETING EXPECTATIONS IN 2013-2014

Toward fulllment of its mission, WWIF’s goals are to:

Expand public awareness of the Foundation

Support education and leadership needs of grape growers, wine makers, and industry students

Support research

Build infrastructure for a strong organization

ScholarshipsThe last year has been a banner year for supporting education. WWIF’s scholarship program underwentextensive review, improvements, and fundraising. The purpose was two-fold: To keep up with growth, scholarship infrastructure and procedures needed attention. Additionally, both improvements and fund-raising increased the impact WWIF can make in the support of education for industry students.

WSU Teaching Vineyard

Industry Projects Funded Through Grant AwardsWWIF continues to support both grower and winemaker education as well as research through the pursuit, receipt and implementation of substantial grant funds for industry projects. The following pages highlightcurrent grant projects.

Meanwhile…WWIF is building capacity to eectively respond to industry needs. A strategic planning eort started in 2012continues to strengthen the organization from the inside out. And, improved communication eorts areyielding increased media coverage of WWIF’s service to the industry and increased industry awareness of WWIF.

WWIF’s 2013 ™ Auction Fund-a-Need project to remediate, improve, and increase existinginfrastructure at the WSU teaching vineyard is an exemplary eort in support of student education. Theproject is explored in greater detail in the following pages.

Past Scholarship Recipients: In Their Own Words

2014ANNUAL REPORT

“This generous assistance has made it possible for me to focus on maintaining a highlevel of academic work ethic without the added burden of nancial strain. I am gratefulto WWIF…for also promoting the education and training of many of my peers…the"next generation" of winemakers and viticulturists in Washington.”

–With assistance from six WWIF scholarships,Adam K. Bright graduated from Washington State University with a B.S. in Viticulture and Enology, and he was hired by Ste Michelle Wine Estates in 2014.

"Receiving multiple scholarships from the Foundation provided invaluable support whileI earned my Master’s degree at WSU.”

–As a graduate student at Washington State University, Georey Hall was dedicated to his research on the causes of “berry shrivel,” and how it eects both viticulture and wine. 2015 will mark the second year Hall has served as Poster Session Chair at the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers annual Convention.

“For me, winning the Clore Scholarship helped meet my immediate nancialneeds as a student but more importantly oered motivation for years. I knewthat the scholarship committee had deemed me worthy of the award and hadfaith in me and the contribution I would make to the industry.”

–Marcus Miller works at his family-owned Aireld Estates Winery in Prosser. He also serves on the WWIF Scholarship Selection Committee.

WSU Teaching VineyardA 2013 ™ Auction Fund-a-Need project, the WSU Teaching Vineyard, next to the future home of theWine Science Center at the WSU Tri-Cities campus, is a critical "outdoor lab" for 75 undergraduate students togain skills in all areas of managing a vineyard.

The need was identied for a viable, high quality, self-sustaining, well-managed teaching vineyard for practical,hands-on student experience at Washington State University. The project underway will remediate, improve, and increase existing infrastructure of the teaching vineyard.

The generosity of Fund-a-Need donors has been a leveraging tool as WWIF Board members have workedwith WSU and a number of industry stakeholders to outline and implement an improvement and expansionplan made possible almost entirely by donated materials and labor. When it is complete, the $15,000 ofFund-a-Need dollars will largely be used to fund a student vineyard manager position.

GrantsThe Foundation actively seeks out state and federal grant funding to address needs within the Washingtongrape and wine industry. Upon receiving a grant award, WWIF lls the role of “project manager,” coordinatingwith industry members to see a project through to completion.
