Chapter 1:Product OverviewThank you or choosing the Compact Wireless-G USBAdapter. The Adapter connects to your PC via a USB port,

leaving your PCs slots available or other purposes. TheAdapter also lets you connect with any o the growingnumber o wireless hotspots in public places such ascoee shops, airports, hotels and convention centers. Withthis Adapter, your wireless networking experience can beaster and easier than ever.

Chapter 2 Wireless Security Checklist


Chapter 2:Wireless Security ChecklistWireless networks are convenient and easy to install, sohomes with high-speed Internet access are adopting them

at a rapid pace. Because wireless networking operates bysending inormation over radio waves, it can be morevulnerable to intruders than a traditional wired network.Like signals rom your cellular or cordless phones, signalsrom your wireless network can also be intercepted. Sinceyou cannot physically prevent someone rom connectingto your wireless network, you need to take some additionalsteps to keep your network secure.

1. Change the default wirelessnetwork name or SSID

Wireless devices have a deault wireless network nameor Service Set Identiier (SSID) set by the actory. Thisis the name o your wireless network, and can be upto 32 characters in length. Linksys wireless productsuse linksys as the deault wireless network name. Youshould change the wireless network name to somethingunique to distinguish your wireless network rom otherwireless networks that may exist around you, but do notuse personal inormation (such as your Social Securitynumber) because this inormation may be available oranyone to see when browsing or wireless networks.

2. Change the default password

For wireless products such as access points, routers, andgateways, you will be asked or a password when youwant to change their settings. These devices have a deaultpassword set by the actory. The Linksys deault passwordis admin. Hackers know these deaults and may try touse them to access your wireless device and change yournetwork settings. To thwart any unauthorized changes,customize the devices password so it will be hard toguess.

3. Enable MAC address filtering

Linksys routers and gateways give you the ability toenable Media Access Control (MAC) address iltering. TheMAC address is a unique series o numbers and lettersassigned to every networking device. With MAC addressiltering enabled, wireless network access is providedsolely or wireless devices with speciic MAC addresses.For example, you can speciy the MAC address o eachcomputer in your home so that only those computers canaccess your wireless network.

4. Enable encryption

Encryption protects data transmitted over a wirelessnetwork. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA2) and WiredEquivalency Privacy (WEP) oer dierent levels o security

or wireless communication.A network encrypted with WPA/WPA2 is more securethan a network encrypted with WEP, because WPA/WPA2uses dynamic key encryption. To protect the inormationas it passes over the airwaves, you should enable thehighest level o encryption supported by your networkequipment.

WEP is an older encryption standard and may be theonly option available on some older devices that do notsupport WPA.

General Network Security GuidelinesWireless network security is useless i the underlyingnetwork is not secure.

Password protect all computers on the network andindividually password protect sensitive iles.

Change passwords on a regular basis.

Install anti-virus sotware and personal irewallsotware.

Disable ile sharing (peer-to-peer). Some applicationsmay open ile sharing without your consent and/or

knowledge.

Additional Security Tips

Keep wireless routers, access points, or gateways awayrom exterior walls and windows.

Turn wireless routers, access points, or gatewayso when they are not being used (at night, duringvacations).

Use strong passphrases that are at least eight charactersin length. Combine letters and numbers to avoid usingstandard words that can be ound in the dictionary.

Chapter 3:ConfigurationThe Linksys Wireless Manager is used to conigure theAdapter. The Wireless Manager lets you search or available

wireless networks, establish or terminate a connectionwith a wireless network, and save a wireless networkssettings.

How to Access the Wireless Manager

Ater you have installed the Adapter, the Linksys WirelessManager icon appears in the system tray o your computer.I the Adapter is connected to a wireless network, the iconwill have green bars (the exact number o green barsvaries depending on the networks signal strength). I theAdapter is not connected to a wireless network, the iconwill have gray bars with a red X.

To open the Wireless Manager, click the icon, and thenselect View Wireless Networks... rom the pop-up menu.(To skip the pop-up menu, double-click the icon instead.)

To close the Wireless Manager, click the icon, then selectClose rom the pop-up menu.

How to Use the Wireless ManagerThe Wireless Manager opens with the Connect to aWireless Networkscreen. This screen allows you to connectto a wireless network, or to disconnect rom a wirelessnetwork.

When the Connect to a Wireless Network screen irstappears, it displays a message indicating that the WirelessManager is searching or wireless networks within range.When the search is complete, the screen then displays theavailable wireless networks within range.

The list o available wireless networks provides theollowing inormation about each network:

Network name. The networks unique name or SSID.

Connection status. The word Connected appears ithe Adapter is connected to the network.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup support. The icon appears ifthe network supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup.

NOTE: The Adapter supports Wi-Fi Protected Setup,a feature that makes it easy to set up a wireless

network. For information on this feature, go to How

to Connect Using Wi-Fi Protected Setup, page 8.

Security. The icon appears if the network uses

wireless security. The security type (WEP, WPA, etc.) is

listed below the network name.

Network signal strength. The green bars in the icon indicate the networks signal strength; is thestrongest level and is the weakest level.

To connect to a wireless network, proceed to How toConnect to a Wireless Network, page 6. To disconnectrom a wireless network, select the network rom the list,and then clickDisconnect. To reresh the list o availablewireless networks, clickSearch Again.

How to Connect to a Wireless NetworkFollow these instructions to connect to a wireless network

that has not been saved. (To connect to a saved network,

go to How to Connect to a Saved Network, page 10.)

In the1. Connect to a Wireless Network screen, locatethe name o your wireless network in the list. I yourwireless network is not in the list, proceed to How toConnect to a Hidden Wireless Network, page 7.

How to Connect to a Hidden Wireless Network

NOTE: By deault, a wireless networks routerbroadcasts the network SSID (name). A hiddenwireless network is a network whose router has

been configured not to broadcast the SSID.

Follow these steps to connect to a wireless network that isnot listed on the Connect to a Wireless Networkscreen.

Select1. My network is not in this list in the Connect toa Wireless Networkscreen. Then clickNext.

The next screen asks i you want to connect to a hidden2.network. I your network is hidden, select Connect to

hidden network, and then clickNext.

on and is within range of the Adapter, and then

Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Follow these instructions to connect

to a wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Setup.

NOTE: Beore you begin, make sure the routerand the computer with the Adapter are in thesame room.

Select your network in the1. Connect to a WirelessNetworkscreen, and then clickConnect.

Saved Networks

When you connect to a wireless network, you can saveits settings so that it will be easier to reconnect to thenetwork at a later time. This is most helpul with hiddennetworks; i you do not save a hidden networks settings,

you will have to enter the SSID and security key.To save a network, select Remember this networkin theConnected to Your Network screen (the last screen thatappears when you connect to a network).

To see a list o your saved networks, select Saved networksin the View drop-down menu o the Connect to a WirelessNetworkscreen.

To delete a saved network orm the list, select the networkand click Remove. To change a networks position inthe list, select the network and click Move up or Movedown.
