WorkshopBackgroundandPurposeIn2017,theWUNGlobalAfricaGroup(GAG)developedacollaborativebookprojectentitledAfricaandtheSustainableDevelopmentGoals.TheprojectisinlinewiththeGAGStrategicPlan2016-18objectivetodevelopcollaborativeresearchprojectsattheintersectionoftheAfricanUnion’sAgenda 2063: The AfricaWeWant, theUN2030 Agenda for SustainableDevelopment (containing the Sustainable Development Goals), and the existing researchexpertiseandinterestswithintheWUNmembership.TheprojectalsosupportstheGroup’sstrategicobjectivesofpromotingourthreeAfricanWUNmembersasregionalresearchhubsandpromotingWUNresearchermobility.As set out in the call for chapter abstracts in early 2017, the book’s rules of chapter co-authorshipincludethateachchaptermusthaveatleastoneAfrica-basedco-authorandatleast one WUN-member-based co-author. We are delighted to have achieved a terrificcollection of chapters thatmeet these key criteria.We are happy to report that our co-authorship principles have achieved gender balance as well as the inclusion of chaptercontributionsbyearlycareerresearchersandpractitioners,andsenioracademics.Thebookproject,whichisCo-EditedbyWUNGAGCo-ChairsProf.MaanoRamutsindela(UCT)andDrDavidMickler(UWA),willbepublishedinSpringer’sSustainableDevelopmentGoalsseriesinlate2018/early2019and involvessome50+WUNresearcherswithinatotalgroupof70+contributing co-authors. The book series can be accessed athttp://www.springer.com/series/15486OnSaturday2December2017,GAGheldabookprojectauthors’workshopattheUniversityofCapeTown.Theworkshopwasdesignedtobringthegrouptogethertoindividuallypresentandcollectivelyreviewinitialdraftchapters.Theaimsoftheworkshopweretoinspireasenseof research collaboration across the diverse group, to obtain new ideas from the cross-pollination of disciplinary perspectives, different approaches and issues, and various casestudies,andtoprovideaplatformtorefineeachinitialdraftchapteraheadofthesubmissionoffinaldraftchapterson31January2018.Byholdingtheauthorworkshopback-to-backwiththeAustraliaAfricaUniversitiesNetwork’s(AAUN)AfricaForum(3DecemberinCapeTown),the authors’ workshop also alignedwith the Group’s strategic objective to allywith like-mindednetworkswherepossibleandwewerepleasedtohaveactiveparticipationbyseveralAAUNmembers.Theworkshopwas supportedbya smallWUNSustainability Fundgrant,whichcoveredthecostsofworkshophosting,providedforsomepartialtravelsubsidiestosupport participation by eligible African-based authors from WUN members, and willcontributetowardsotherbookproductioncosts.Theworkshopwasheld inStudio5 intheDepartmentofEnvironmentalandGeographicalScience,Upper Campus,University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, Cape Town, SouthAfrica.Recommended accommodation was at Protea Hotel by Marriot, located in Mowbray. AworkshopgroupdinnerwasheldatDenAnkerrestaurantatV&AWaterfront.FormatofWorkshopFortheworkshop,eachchapterpresentationwasorganisedintothenominalorderinwhichitwillappearinthebook,dividedintothreesections:•PartI:Africa’sSustainableDevelopment:Approaches,Institutions,Agendas;•PartII:ScientificEvidenceandCriticalThinkingontheSDGsinAfrica;and•PartIII:AfricaandtheSDGs:TheRoleofCollaborativeResearch.

Theworkshopproceededinthisorderofchapters,althoughthefinalbookmayreflectamodifiedorderfollowingreviewanddiscussion.Notallchapterswerepresentedattheworkshopduetosomeauthors’unavailability.Eachchapterhada20-minuteslotforpresentationandinitialcomments.Thepresentationswerefor10minutes,leaving10minutesforcommentsandquestionsbytheotherparticipants.Aconcludingsessionattheendoftheworkshopallowedforgeneralcommentsonthethemes,orderingandothermatters.Followingtheworkshop,contributorswouldthereforehavebothwritten(bytheco-editors)andverbalfeedbackontheirdraftchapters.Contributorswillthenhaveuntil31January2018toincorporatethisfeedbackinordertoproduceandsubmitafinaldraftchapter.
