Wudhu (ablution) is the Islamic procedure for washing parts of the body using clean water, generally in preparation for formal prayers or recitation of the Holy Qur’an.

The Holy Qur’an says "For Allah (SWT) loves those who turn to Him constantly and He loves those who keep themselves pure and clean.“ (2:222)

Wudhu, in Holy Qur’an

“O’ you who believe! When you rise up to prayer, wash your faces and your hands as far as the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to

the ankles;”

The procedure of Wudhu has been simply explained in the Holy Qur’an. Surah Al-Maida’s verse 6 states:

ذين ءامنوا إذا قمتم إلى الصلوة ها ال يأيفاغسلوا وجوهكم و أيديكم إلى المرافق

وامسحوا برءوسكم وأرجلكم إلى الكعبين

Wudhu, according to Imam Reza (as) “ Wudhu eliminates drowsiness and lethargy from man so that the heart can acquire the purity and luminosity for standing in the presence of Allah.”

The 13 conditionsIf the following conditions are present, then the

Wudhu will be correct, otherwise will be void.

1. The water must be Taahir (clean) and not najis;2. The water must be Mubah (permissible to use);3. The water must be Mutlaq (pure not mixed);4. The container must be Mubah;5. The container must not be made of gold/silver;6. The parts of the body to be washed/wiped

must be Taahir;

The 13 conditions …….7. The body must be free of any obstruction that

would prevent the water from reaching it;8. The Niyyat should be of “nearness to Allah” and

not for showing of;9. Tarteeb (succession) in actions must be

observed;10. Muwaalat (no gaps) in the actions;11. One must not acquire the help of others;12. No constraints in using the water;13. There must be enough time to perform wudhu

and salaat.

Wudhu is Waajib For all obligatory prayers;

Namaz-e-Mayyat is waajib-e-kifaaee and wudhu is not waajib

For the forgotten Sajdah and Tashahud during the prayers; Provided that wudhu was invalidated after the salaat Wudhu is not waajib for Sajdatus Sahu

For the obligatory Tawaaf of the Holy Ka’aba

Wudhu is Waajib ….. Wudhu for Nadhr, Qasm, Ahad;

If a person has vowed, sworn or pledged to perform ablution

If a person has vowed, sworn or pledged to touch the Holy Qur’an with the parts of his body

To wash and purify the Holy Qur’an; If the Holy Qur’an becomes impure, one should

perform wudhu before washing it. However, if the delay causes further desecration, it is allowed to touch it without wudhu.

Mustahab …… after Wudhu Do not wipe or dry out the parts of the body on

which you just performed wudhu

Reciting supplications during and after wudhu

Reciting Ayatul Kursi after wudhu

Recite Surah Al-Qadr 3 time after wudhu Do dua and ask Allah (SWT) to fulfill your valid

wishes

However, if the eyes do not see anything, but the ears can hear, wudhu does not become void.

o Things on account of which a person loses his sensibility, like insanity, intoxication or unconsciousness.

o Istihaza (menstrual periods)o Janabat, and, as a recommended precaution, every

state which requires Ghusl.

Wudhu – step by stepIt is compulsory to perform Wudhu for all

obligatory Salaat, with the exception of Salat al-Mayyat (Salaat for the deceased person). In

Wudhu, we wash our face and hands; and wipe our head and the top of our feet.

It is waajib to do NIYYAT (have intention) for the wudhu and that it is for nearness to Allah. Certain steps are highly recommended (MUSTAHAB), but are not Waajib. See slide 11

Supplications before starting Wudhu

"I begin my ablution in the Name of Allah. All praise is due to Allah, Who made water

purifying, and not najis.“

Bismillahi wa billahi wal hamdu lil lahil lazi ja'alal ma'a tahura wa lam yaj alhu najisa.

O Lord! Make me of those who repent and purify themselves.

Supplications while rinsing the mouth

O Lord! Dictate to me the principles of faith on the Day I meet You, and make my tongue

fluent with Your remembrance.

Alla Humma laq qini hujjati yawma alqaka wa atliq lisani bizikrika.

Supplications while washing the nose

O Lord! Do not deprive me of the fragrance of Paradise, and make me of those who smell its

fragrance and perfume.

Alla humma la tuharrim 'alaya rihal jannati waj 'alni mim man yashummu riha ha wa

rawha ha wa tiba ha.

Washing the face -------- WaajibFirst, the face must be washed from the top of the forehead, the place where the hair grows, until the bottom of the chin. The width of the face that must be washed is the distance between the tip of the thumb to the tip of the middle finger. We must wash our face from top to bottom.

O Lord! Make my face bright on the Day when the faces will turn dark. Do not darken

my face on the Day when the faces are bright.

Alla humma bayyiz wajhi yawma taswaddufihil wujuh wala tusawwid waj hi

yawma tabyazzul wujuh.

Washing the right arm -------- Waajib

After washing our face, we wash our right arm, from slightly above the elbow down to our fingertips. This too must be washed from top to bottom.

Supplications while washing the right arm

O Lord! Give my book of deeds in my right hand, and a permanent stay in Paradise on

my left, and make my reckoning an easy one.

Alla humma a'tini kitabi bi yamini wal khulda fil jinani bi yasari wa hasibni hisaban yasira.

Washing the left arm -------- Waajib

After our right arm, we must wash our left arm; again, from above the elbow down to the fingertips, and from the top to bottom.

O Lord! Do not give my book of deeds in my left hand, n or from behind my back, nor chain it to my

neck. I seek refuge in You from the Hell-fire.

Alla humma la tutini kitabi bishimali wala min wara'i zahri wala taj alha maghlu latan ila unuqi wa

a'uzu bika min muqat ta'atin niran.

Wiping the head (Masah) -- Waajib

After these washings, are completed, with the water that is on our right hand, we have to wipe the top of our head (about one finger in length). We must not take any extra water for this.

Supplications while performing Masah of the head

O Lord! Cover me with Your Mercy, Blessings and Forgiveness.

Alla humma ghashshini bi rahmatika wa barakatika wa 'afwika.

Wiping the feet (Masah) -- WaajibWe then proceed to wipe our right foot with our right hand, from the tip of our toes, up to the ankle bone with the water that is remaining in our right hand. Again, we must not take any extra water.

To finish, we wipe our left foot with our left hand from the top of our toes, up to the ankle bone with the water that is remaining on our left hand.

Supplications while wiping the feet

O Lord! Keep me firm on the Bridge (to Paradise) on the Day when the feet will slip, and help me in my efforts to do

things which will please You, O' Glorious and Mighty!.

Alla humma thabbitni alas sirati yawma tazillu fihil aqdam. Waj'al sa'yi fi ma yurzika 'anni ya zal jalali wal ikram.
