The WTVP Endowment FundOver the years many WTVP members and viewers chose to make special additional gifts above and beyond their annual membership to the WTVP Endowment Fund. This fund constitutes a long-term savings account that the Board of Trustees can ac-cess in times of serious financial trouble. For example, the Endowment Fund played a critical role in the station’s survival during the fiscal challenges of 007. A new WTVP Endowment Fund is starting and growing thanks to the contributors listed below. At the end of November, the new Endowment was valued at nearly $75,000. We are most grateful for the confidence and support of all Endowment donors, and especially to the anonymous donor who pledged to match the first $10,000 raised. If you would like to join these donors and have a long-term impact on WTVP’s future, please call the WTVP Development Office at (309) 677-4747.

Downton Abbey Season One of the most phenomenally popular series in MASTER-PIECE history is back for an exciting second season: Downton Abbey Season resumes the story of love and intrigue at an English country estate, now mobilized for the trauma of war. With a returning cast including Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGov-ern, Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Siobhan Finneran, and many more, Downton Abbey Season 2 premieres Jan. 8 from 8-10 p.m., and continues Sundays Jan. 15-Feb. 19 from 8-9 p.m. Downton Abbey was recently honored with an impressive six Primetime Emmy® awards, including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie, plus awards for Supporting Actress Dame Maggie Smith, Writer Julian Fellowes, and nods for Directing, Cinematography, and Costumes. The second season promises to be as satisfying as the first, with thwarted and rekindled romances, forgotten and fresh scandals, and enough new plot twists to weave a tapestry with Lord Grantham’s family crest. “MASTERPIECE viewers took Downton Abbey to heart and they won’t be disappointed with season two,” says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton.Last season opened with the sinking of the Titanic in 191, which had dire consequences for Downton Abbey. The new season picks up in the middle of another disaster, World War I, which affected every aspect of life in England, accelerating the social change that was already transforming an age-old system of class and privilege.

AlsoJoin NOVA on Jan. 4 at 8 p.m. as scientists from around the world attempt to discover how likely volcanoes are to erupt, when eruptions might happen and how deadly they could prove to be in “Deadliest Volcanoes.”

Someone recently sent me one of those junk emails that purport to hold the wisdom of the ages in a few cute sayings. This one blamed all the ills of American society over the past fifty years—including dandruff, mange, plagues of frogs and locusts, and teenagers in general—on television. Normally I automatically hit the delete button, but this one got my attention.Television is one of those common experiences that we all share and on which we all embrace some deeply held opinion. We all love something on TV; we all hate something on TV. We adulate the stars, curse the villains, and think someone else should have been voted off the island. And then there is Public Television.Public Television is arguably the largest stage in every community presenting hun-dreds of hours of world-class performances, untold hours of thought provoking and mind-blowing science, nature programming that is without equal, news and public affairs that are indeed unbiased and “fair and balanced.” And, of course, there are the more than forty hours a week of consistently excellent children’s programming.

The topper is that, thanks to your gen-erosity as members of WTVP, it comes uninterrupted by commercials. This is the television that gives lie to the bumper stickers. Public Television doesn’t rot your teeth or dull your mind. It is television that is truly worth watch-ing, and television worth supporting. Thank you for making it possible.

As you prepare to weather the cold and snow of the coming few months, check out season two of Downton Abbey on MASTERPIECE on Sunday nights. Season one of this costume drama played to rave reviews last year, and was a huge Emmy award nominee and win-ner, and season two will not disappoint. Finally, from all of us at WTVP, best wishes for a happy, safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to serving you even better in 01.

As NATURE continues, discover what the future may hold for Alaska’s brown bears in “Fortress of the Bears”—Jan. 25 from 7-8 p.m. Find out if human beings’ efforts to outwit raccoons are actually making the animals smarter in “Raccoon Nation”—Feb. 8 from 7-8 p.m. And gain new in-sights into the lives of whales and dolphins in a visually powerful, engaging and entertaining three-part series, Ocean Giants—Feb 22 from 7-10 p.m.

Airing at 8 p.m., NOVA is packed with exciting stories looking at the scientific impact of natural disasters, tracing events that played vital roles in defeating Hitler, and following a new breed of experts who approach “art mysteries” as if they were crime scenes. The series continues in February with the ever-engaging David Pogue (NOVA “Making Stuff”) who is now “Hunting the Elements” in a new two-part special. NOVA also offers an exclusive look at the amazing story of two little girls joined at the head in “Separating Twins.”

black history/Our historyThis February, WTVP offers an expansive slate of programs profiling the rich history, culture and contributions of African-Americans. With new programs that delve into the archives of history, this year’s schedule provides an in-depth look at a variety of historical events from the post-Emancipation era to the rise of the black power movement. Highlights include:In the compelling story of an unsung hero, Underground Railroad: The William Still Story, airing Monday, Feb. 6 from 9-10 p.m., explores one man’s mission to help slaves escape to freedom.

Slavery by Another Name, premiering Monday, Feb. 13, from 8-9:30 p.m., is a new documentary based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Wall Street Journal senior writer Douglas A. Blackmon examining the concept of “neoslavery,” which sentenced African-Americans in the post-Emancipation South to forced labor for violating an array of laws that criminalized their ev-eryday behavior. Award-winning actor Laurence Fishburne narrates the film.Frontline “The Interrupters,” premiering Tuesday, Feb. 14, from 9-11 p.m., follows a group of former gang leaders in Chicago who try to “interrupt” shootings and protect their communities from the violence they themselves once committed. Finally, American Masters offers a profile of Cab Calloway, one of the first black musicians to tour the segregationist South and a regular performer at Harlem’s famous Cotton Club. “Cab Calloway: Sketches” premiering Monday, Feb. 27, from 9-10 p.m., showcases this exceptional bandleader and singer who charmed audiences around the world with his boundless energy, bravado and elegant showmanship. In addition to premieres, PBS will air an encore of Freedom Riders: American Experience on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 7-9 p.m. Freedom Riders is acclaimed filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s powerful and inspirational story of the more than 400 black and white men and women who, using non-violent tactics, risked their lives to challenge segregated travel facilities in the South in 1961.Also look for compelling films from Independent Lens. American Experience returnsLarger-than-life American figures—heroes or scoundrels depending on your point of view... Epic moments and accomplishments that have shaped America... People whose choices defined them as outsiders and yet who are uniquely American… American Experience’s 01 season presents them all in films that document the events and legends of our nation.

The series—now airing Tuesday nights—launches in January with “The Wild West,” a month of themed programming, featuring new programs Billy the Kid (1/10, 8-9 p.m.) and Custer’s Last Stand (1/17, 7-9 p.m.), and including several popular American Experience Western profiles.

In February, the season continues with the latest installment in the acclaimed and popular series of presi-dential biographies—Clin-ton (Monday, 2/20, 8-10 p.m. and Tuesday, 2/21, 7-9 p.m.).

And look for a remarkable film on Americans living in separate, closed communities whose past and present reflect the nation’s most fundamental principles—The Amish (2/28, 7-9 p.m.).

American Experi-ence… Masterful storytelling making history live.

What’s happening atWTVP What’s happening atWTVPTeachers—have we got a tool for you!Check it out at http://illinois.pbslearning-media.orgWTVP and its PBS partners from across the state have launched PBS Learning-Media “Illinois Edition,” a new library of FREE digital media resources and support materials designed for classroom and homeschooling use and professional development.PBS LearningMedia is a full service digital library with over 16,000 research-based instructional resources including videos, interactive images, audio files, mobile apps, lesson plans, and worksheets. It includes resources not only from popular PBS shows like NOVA, Frontline, American Experience, Nature and Cyberchase, but also from trusted and timely source material from universities, government agencies, museums, libraries and more. The result is a tremendous teaching tool that puts us on the cusp of reaching and teaching our children in a whole new way. Technology can be easily integrated into the classroom to enhance core subjects, from K-16 science, math, and English language arts, to performing arts and the social sciences.Again, the service is FREE for teachers to use. The materials are tied to Common Core and national curriculum standards and resources can be easily searched, saved, tagged and shared. It’s easy, it’s user-friendly and the best way to appreciate what a valuable and effective tool it can be is to visit http://illinois.pbslearningmedia.org and take it out for a test drive! If you’d like more information on PBS LearningMedia visit www.wtvp.org, call Linda Miller at 309-495-0591 or email [email protected].

The PBS LM PilotAlong with our partners from other Illinois public stations, WTVP conducted a pilot project with teachers across the state in October and November to determine the most effective ways of using PBS LearningMedia resources. Emily Dawson, a junior high teacher from Riverview Grade School, was one of the Central Illinois participants. She had this to say in a recent Peoria Journal Star article about the ser-vice: “With a limited budget, we don’t have a lot of money for additional resources. But I can pull things from this site that allow me to extend what I can offer my students and enrich the lessons.”The data participants provided is being compiled and analyzed by Dr. Evangeline Pianfetti, Assistant Dean of Learning Technologies at the University of Illinois College of Education. The information collected will be used to determine, among other things, what additional resources should be added to the library and how digital media can best be utilized to increase student achievement. Some interesting elements of the study are:3 Over 50 pre- and in-service teachers from 43 schools across the state participated,

reaching 2,618 students

3 The number of years participating teachers had in the classroom ranged from slightly less than a year to 19 years

3 Kindergarten through 12th grade teachers participated, and most were respon-sible for teaching multiple subjects in their classrooms.

40 and CountingKids, cameras, ice cream and an enormous dog named Ruff Ruff-man…. WTVP’s 40th anniversary party was a smash hit!WTVP has been celebrating 40 years of service to Central Illinois with upgraded technology, more local productions, executive improve-ments and increased outreach efforts… but we decided it was high time for an actual party. So, on December 3, we opened the doors of the studio and invited our members and friends to experience their public television sta-tion—behind the scenes and on camera.

The building was filled with families, happily enjoying ice cream and Elmo cookies, packing the hallways for station tours, and posing for pictures with our special guest star—Ruff Ruffman from FETCH! But the real highlight of the day was the studio where everyone could try out the special effects of the Green Screen, and tape their own personal message to WTVP.Keep watching for new spots from your friends and neighbors! From cheerlead-ing squads and Girl Scout troops, to families and individuals, tune in to find out what people have to say about 40 years of WTVP.

Moyers returnsThe headline in the March 010 WTVP Program Guide read: The Changing Face of Friday Nights. It was the story of two programs that had been the foundation of Friday night on WTVP since 003, but were leaving the schedule. One was Bill Moyers Journal. It was a momentous event, for Bill Moyers had been a staple on public television since 1971.The only constant, as they say, is change, and once again Moyers is changing – this time, his mind. He’ll return to WTVP with Moyers & Company on Sundays at 2 p.m. beginning Jan. 15. Here are excerpts from the letter he recently sent to his friends at local PBS stations explaining his latest project (full letter at wtvp.org). “When I retired the Journal more than a year ago, I said to our audience: ‘It’s time to go.’ … On the eve of my 76th birthday, it was time to step off the treadmill of production and take some deep breaths. … So I brought the Journal to a close.During this period we have heard often from viewers around the country who had become part of the virtual community that grew up around our broadcasts. Kindred spirits, whose unseen but felt presence buoyed our efforts week after week on the air, wrote, emailed, or stopped us on the street to say they missed the Journal. Their entreaties got us to thinking about what we might yet do to contribute to the conversation of democracy. With all this in mind, we have decided to offer stations a new hour-long weekly broadcast featuring people we think you and your community will want to know: people whose conversation provokes conversation, whose ideas spark more ideas. There will be a diversity of voices, one-on-one interviews with lively minds rich in experience and insight, as well as an exchange of views among people who may

disagree on politics, governance, faith, religion and the state of democracy, but who nonetheless agree on the im-portance of a civil dialogue about their differences. There will be segments on movies, television, the web, and books. The late Eric Sevareid, one of the coun-try’s foremost essayists and my colleague and mentor at CBS News many years ago, called this kind of journalism “news of the mind” and urged me to make it my beat. I have done so in much of my work over these many decades. Our aim with the new series will be to offer viewers some different news, some new voices and fresh thinking, and an occasional cultural grace note. Each hour will consist of at least two segments – one timely and one timeless interview – and an occasional essay. The set, music, and graphics will signal that this is something different – something new from Moyers.
