Global Kids Online – Key messages

An innovative new research partnership greatly expands the amount of in-depth, cross national data available on the opportunities and risks of child internet use across the globe.

The Global Kids Online project, a multi-country initiative led by UNICEF Innocenti and the London School of Economics, aims to create an international network of researchers and experts through provision of a

research toolkit available online. The toolkit is designed to generate research to better understand children’s diverse digital experiences in various countries and contexts.

The initial phase of the project consists of studies on how children access and use the internet in Serbia, South Africa, Argentina and the Philippines.

Most children say they learn something new online every week and use internet to access school or health related information.

Parents lack the skills the support older children as they go online, study shows. Mobile internet access makes it harder for parents to protect children online

Younger children’s digital safety skills also need support. Most older children, but fewer younger children, report knowing how to manage their privacy settings online, a key indication of their digital and safety skills

A minority of young internet users have had contact with unknown people online. Most children do not go on to meet face to face with such persons and usually have some kind of prior connection to the child

In some countries, over two thirds of children have seen sexual content online

What bothers children online: (in their own words) pop ups, internet scams, scary news and pictures and harassment
