COMING UPThe #22 Buffs end their six-game homestand on Tuesday night as they take on the Falcons of UT Permian Basin with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center in Lone Star Conference action. The 10-1 start to the season marks the best start to a season since 2011-12.

- SCOUTING THE FIELDUT PERMIAN BASINUT Permian Basin is led by fourth year head coach Andy Newman who has led the Falcons during their transition from the Heartland Conference to the LSC. Newman spent 10 seasons at Cal State-Fullerton, serving as an Interim Head Coach for the 2012-13 season and the Titans’ Associate Head Coach for five campaigns.

The Falcons enter the week with an overall record of 9-1 with a 2-0 mark in Lone Star Conference play following home wins over Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico. UTPB carries a three-game win streak into Tuesday night’s matchup in Canyon dating back to an 88-94 loss to Ouachita Baptist on Nov. 25th in Kingsville, Texas.

UTPB is led offensively by Daeshon Francis who has gone 76-of-119 from the floor including 53-of-68 from the charity stripe to lead the LSC in scoring with 21.0 points per game to go along with 9.1 rebounds per contest. The Falcons have gone 335-of-699 (47.9%) from the field this season including 99-of-283 (35%) from deep and 229-of-304 (75.3%) from the free throw line while averaging 47.8 rebounds per contest and an impressive 99.8 points per contest to lead the LSC in scoring and second in the nation.

The Buffs lead the all-time series against UT Permian Basin, 5-0 in a series dating back to the 2002-03 season. Four of the five meetings have come in Canyon including the last on 12/10/11 as the stingy WT defense topped the Falcons, 61-45.

- A LOOK BACKENMU RECAPWest Texas A&M has six different players score double-figures as the #24 Buffs shot 50% from

the floor to outlast the rival Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico, 92-86 in front of 876 fans at the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas. The Buffs win their fifth straight contest to improve to 10-1 (2-0 LSC) while the Greyhounds fall to 4-5 (0-2 LSC) on the season.

The Buffs went 30-of-60 (50%) from the floor including 8-of-28 (28.6%) from deep and 24-of-35 (68.6%) from the free throw line to go along with 43 rebounds (15 offensive, 28 defensive), 14 assists, 19 turnovers, four blocks and seven steals. Chavlovich went 9-of-16 from the floor to lead the Buffs with 22 points with five other Buffs scoring double-digits.

LAST MEETING WITH UTPB (DEC. 10, 2011)The West Texas A&M Buffaloes used a strong defensive performance to top the Falcons of UT-Permian Basin in non-conference action on Saturday, December 10th, 2011 (61-45) in front of 692 fans at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.

The second half saw the Falcons gain momentum from the floor, going 11-for-20 from the floor including 5-of-10 from the outside but the WT lead was too much to overcome in a 61-45 non-conference win. The Buffs went 10-of-16 from the floor but just 3-of-11 from the charity stripe in the second half to shoot .600 on the night.

Kennon Washington finished the game with 22 points followed by teammates Donald Sims and Courtney Carr with 11 apiece.

MOVING ON UPJunior guard David Chavlovich is quickly making his way up WT’s all-time career scoring list as the Arlington native has scored 1,298 points in his 70 career games in Maroon & White to average an impressive 18.5 points per contest. Chavlovich’s 22 points against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday kept the guard in 4th place all-time as he has passed Maurice Cheeks (1975-78 / 1,227) for fifth place and former teammate Tez Dumars (2011-15 / 1,230) for fourth place all-time. Chavlovich currently sits 108 points behind Price Brookfield (1940-42 / 1,406) for third place all-time.

NABC DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (DEC. 6)The Buffs are off to the best start to a season since 2011-12 as they jumped to number 22 in the newest National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Tuesday afternoon by the association’s offices in Kansas City, Missouri. The Buffs (10-1) currently hold the most wins in all of NCAA Division II Basketball including a pair of Top-25 wins against then #23 Ar-kansas-Fort Smith during the D2CCA DII Tipoff Classic to open the season following a win over then #15 Fort Lewis in the 2016-17 home opener at the First United Bank Center.

WT made their first appearance in the D2SIDA Top-25 Poll on Tues-day afternoon as they jumped to 12th in the poll accumulated and voted on by Sports Information Directors around the country. The Buffs also jumped three spots to sit atop of this week’s South Central Region poll released by D2SIDA.

LSC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEARWT junior guard David Chavlovich was nearly a unanimous selection to be named the third LSC Preseason Player of the Year in program history, joining Rod Prater (2003-04) and Donald Sims (2012-13). The Arlington native was named a National Basketball Coaches Asso-ciation (NABC) All-American as a sophomore as he led the LSC in scoring with 20.5 points per game. He set a new program single-sea-son record in three-point field goals made (111) and three-point field goals attempted (287) while joining the 1,000 Point Club and being named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year. The Arlington native has also been named a Preseason All-American by Sporting News and the Basketball Times while making an appear-ance on the Division II Bulletin Super 16 list.

Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in WT men’s basketball history.

In just two short years Brown has turned around the West Texas A&M University Basketball Program. Brown led the team to its first 20+ win season since 2010-11. The Buffs were picked to finish 5th in the LSC this past season and despite a pre-season, season ending injury to sophomore starter Carl White the team still managed to finish 2nd in the LSC with an overall record of 21-10. The 2nd place finish is the highest since the conference was split North/South. The Buffs continued to battle minor injuries throughout the year but every player that was called on would step up. Under Brown’s di-rection the team had some very strong individual performances. WT sophomore guard David Chav-lovich led the way. For his outstanding play David was named an NABC All-American, the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year and 1st Team All-LSC selection. Sophomore Jordan Evans (playing in his first season) received honorable mention All-LSC acclaim. The Buffs again were dominate in the classroom as the team GPA exceeded a 3.0 for the year.

2015-16 the Buffs set a new record in the class-room. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Coach Brown inherited a WT team that won two games in the LSC and 10 games overall in 2013-14. Brown had to start from scratch in late April, the team had three seniors and one walkon redshirt freshman. Just three student-athletes saw playing time from the previous year and the team was picked to finish last in the Lone Star Confer-ence Preseason Poll. However, under Brown West Texas A&M University finished the season 5th in the LSC and posted a 17-12 overall record. The Buffs made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed. There were some individual accolades as well, all three of the returning seniors improved on their scoring average from the previous season. Tez Dumars surpassed Maurice Cheeks in WT All-Time scoring and finished his career ranked 4th All-Time in scoring at WT. David Chavlovich was the squads leading scorer, 2nd Team All-Conference Perform-er and the Freshman of the Year in the LSC as he averaged 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93 assists and 30 steals.

In 2014-15, the Buffs set a new record in the classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA for Men’s Basketball in a season.

Tom was the driving force as the Associate Head Coach and head recruiter in the most successful Division II men’s basketball program in recent history at Winona State University. The Warriors won the NCAA Division II National Cham-pionship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as the National Finalist in 2007. During that span, Winona State posted an unprecedented 105-6 record. WT Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson played for Coach Brown from 2005-2008. Quincy’s record as a collegiate player at WSU was 105-6.

Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006, and didn’t end until the national title game on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad won a NCAA record 38 games.

An excellent recruiter and teacher, Brown recruited and developed some of the best players in the nation with three National Player of the Year recipients, along with seven first team All-America honorees. 11 players total have earned All-America status including WT Sopho-more David Chavlovich. Brown has coached five NSIC Most Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defen-sive Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most Valuable Players.

Brown is doing it again at WT as David Chav-lovich has earned both Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in the best Division II Confer-ence in the Nation, the Lone Star Conference.

Brown attended and played basketball (1988-1992) and baseball (1991) at Winona State University. He finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in program history in scoring, second in assists and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1993 in physical education and completed his master’s degree in education in 1998.

He and his wife Dr. Trisha Brown are the proud parents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella. Dr. Brown is currently an Instructor and works in the Sports & Exercise Science Department at West Texas A&M.

The Buffs went 28-of-64 (43.8%) from the floor including 10-of-24 (41.7%) from deep and 20-of-28 (71.4%) from the charity stripe to go along with 37 rebounds (nine offensive, 28 defen-sive), 13 assist, seven turnovers, two blocks and nine steals. Evans led the way for WT with 20 points followed by Chavlovich (16), Walton (14), White (13), and Quaid (12) in double-digits while Quaid ended the game with 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Azusa Pacific went 23-of-57 (40.4%) from the field including 9-of-26 (34.6% from long range and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the free throw line to go along with 40 rebounds (10 offensive, 30 defensive), 13 assists, 20 turnovers, two blocks and four steals. ORANGE, CA - West Texas A&M junior guard Jordan Evans scored 20 points for the second straight contest as the Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor in an 83-70 win over St. Cloud State during the CCA Division II Tipoff Clas-sic at the Santiago Canyon College Athletics Complex in Orange, Califor-nia.

The Buffs were led offensively by Ev-ans with his second straight 20-point performance followed by White with 17 and Chavlovich with 15. Walton, Chavlovich and White grabbed six rebounds each while Chavlovich dished out five steals. WT went 29-of-58 (50%) from the floor including 11-of-25 (44%) from deep and 14-of-28 (50%) with 36 rebounds (nine offen-sive, 27 defensive), 17 assists, 13 turn-overs, two blocks and three steals. The Huskies were led by Davis with 23 points followed by Scottie Stone with 16 while Davis grabbed eight rebounds on the night. SCSU went 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the floor including 7-of-21 (33.3%) from long range and 19-of-26 (73.1%) from the free throw line to go along with 42 rebounds (15 offensive, 27 defensive), 11 assists, 16 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.

ORANGE, CA - The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M are off to their best start to a season since 2012-13 thanks to an 11-0 run in the heart of the sec-ond half as WT outlasted #23 Arkan-sas-Fort Smith, 94-86 in the finale of the CCA Division II Tipoff Classic at the Santiago Canyon College Athlet-ics Complex in Orange, California.

The Buffs were led by Walton with 24 points followed by Chavlovich (19), Evans (17) and Golightly Jr. (10) with double-digit points while Chavlovich led WT with six rebounds and three assists. WT went 33-of-65 (50.8%) from the floor including 10-of-29 (34.5%) from deep and 18-of-27 (66.7%) from the free throw line to go along with 37 rebounds (13 offensive, 24 defensive), 13 assists, 13 turnovers, five blocks and three steals. UAFS was led by Thomas with 20 points and five rebounds followed by Youngblood with 19 and Parker with 14 points and a team leading six rebounds. The Buffs were led offensively by Chavlovich with 21 points as the junior went 5-of-12 from the floor including 4-of-6 from deep while Evans (18), Quaid (15), Walton (10) and White (10) scored double-digits for WT. WT went 27-of-65 (41.5%) from the floor including 10-of-25 (40%) from long range and 26-of-31 (83.9%) from the charity stripe to go along with 46 rebounds (15 offensive, 31 defensive), 13 assists, 15 turnovers, six blocks and seven steals. Fort Lewis was led by Blaylock and Bach with 21 points each to tie a game high while Farris finished the game with 15 points. The Skyhawks went 25-of-59 (42.4%) from the field including 10-of-18 (55.6%) from deep and 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the free throw line to go along with 35 rebounds (eight offensive, 27 defen-sive), 17 assists, 13 turnovers, three blocks and six steals in the loss.

The Buffs were led offensively by Chavlovich with 22 points to run his career point total to 1,190 to move into seventh place all-time to pass former West Texas State standout Sim-mie Hill (1967-69 | 1,189 pts). The Buffs were led by David Chav-lovich with a game high 26 point fol-lowed by Joseph Prince (16), Jordan Evans (15) and Skyler O’Laughlin (10). WT went 27-of-72 (37.5%) from the floor including 11-of-39 (28.2%) from deep and 21-of-31 (67.7% from the free throw line to go along with 37 rebounds (18 offensive, 19 defensive), 13 assists, 16 turnovers and 11 steals. The Buffs went 31-of-56 (55.4%) from the floor including 9-of-24 (37.5%) from deep and 21-of-30 (70%) from the charity stripe to go along with 31 rebounds (seven offensive, 24 defen-sive), 16 assists, nine turnovers, two blocks and eight steals. Chavlovich went 7-of-14 from the floor including 5-of-5 from the free throw line to lead all players with 21 points followed by Prince with 19 and Golightly Jr. with 13 for the Buffs while J. Evans grabbed six rebounds. CANYON, TX - WT remained perfect at home on Saturday afternoon but it wasn’t easy as a free throw with 0.3 seconds remaining by Southern Naza-rene sent the two teams into over-time but the Buffs held on for a wild, 82-81 win over the visiting Crimson Storm to wrap-up the 2016 Pak-A-Sak WT Thanksgiving Classic.

Chavlovich led all players with 27 points followed by Golightly Jr. with 13 points while J. Evans and White contributed 11 points each while White grabbed eight rebounds. WT went 22-of-65 (33.8%) from the floor including 7-of-29 (24.1%) from deep and 31-of-45 (68.9%) from the free throw line to go along with 39 re-bounds (17 offensive, 22 defensive), 14 assists, nine turnovers, nine blocks and nine steals in the win.
