Please respond to the following questions.
1) Reflecting on this year’s assessment(s), how does the evidence of student learning impact your faculty’s confidence in the program being
reviewed; how does that analysis change when compared with previous assessment evidence?
WSU Physical Education Program Assessments 2011-2012
36
To answer this question, compare evidence from prior years to the evidence from the current year. Discuss trends of evidence that
increases your confidence in the strengths of the program. Also discuss trends of concern (e.g. students struggling to achieve particular
student outcomes).
New faculty members have amplified the rigor in the course assignments. The increased demands on students are reflected in
possible lower average scores on some assignments. These assignments are new in some cases and have not been reported in previous
reports. The increased accountability for learning given to the students will only help to increase the credibility of the program. Our
faculty is confident the program is prepared for review. We intend to implement curriculum changes that will give our students more
opportunities to show evidence of professional preparation to plan for, prepare for and teach K-12 students a developmentally appropriate
variety of skills and concepts and to assess their students’ learning of the concepts taught. Our students will be given opportunities to
reflect on their personal growth and development as teachers and as professionals in the field of Physical Education.
Our present program assessments are lacking in the area of measuring fitness levels of our students and measures of their
proficiency in activity specific skills. We have made plans to include fitness and skill specific assessments at least yearly for all students.
Fitness assessments will be done during spring semester and skill specific assessments will be done fall semester each year.
2) With whom did you share the results of the year’s assessment efforts?
The results of the year’s assessment efforts have been shared with the program faculty which has initiated the planned curriculum
change process. We have also shared the assessment results with our department chair.
3) Based on your program’s assessment findings, what subsequent action will your program take?
We intend now to incorporate assessment measures in all Skill Development and Methods of Teaching classes to hold students
accountable for becoming proficient in all activity specific skills and to become fit. We will also hold a skill assessment event each fall
semester where every major and minor will be assessed on their skill proficiency in order to encourage skill maintenance. We will also
have a fitness assessment event each spring semester where majors and minors will be assessed on their health related fitness.
WSU Physical Education Program Assessments 2011-2012
37
We will initiate curriculum changes that will require every skill development course for the students so they will have the
opportunity to gain skills in a variety of areas instead of only a few areas. This will give our students greater opportunities to show
evidence of accomplishing elements 2.1 Demonstrate personal competence in motor skill performance for a variety of physical activities
and movement patterns, 2.2 Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness throughout the program, and 2.3 Demonstrate
performance concepts related to skillful movement in a variety of physical activities.
Curriculum changes will also enable a more thorough discussion and assessment of elements 1.1 Describe and apply physiological
and biomechanical concepts related to skillful movement, physical activity and fitness, 1.2 Describe and apply motor learning and
psychological/behavioral theory related to skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness, and 1.3 Describe and apply motor
development theory and principles related to skillful movement, physical activity, and fitness. Other curriculum changes will offer our
students more opportunities to show evidence of accomplishing elements 3.4 Plan for and manage resources to provide active, fair, and
equitable learning experiences, 3.5 Plan and adapt instruction for diverse student needs, adding specific accommodations and/or
modifications for student exceptionalities, and 3.6 Plan and implement progressive and sequential instruction that addresses the diverse
needs of all students.
We also intend to continue with currently successful practices as needed.
