WSCS Has Security Cameras

Consistent with the commitment of the Bangor School Department to provide for the safety and the security of students, staff and faculty, security cameras and monitors have been installed recently at both the William S. Cohen School and the James F. Doughty School. Cameras and monitors had been installed previously at Bangor High School. Regularly the BSD reviews safety and security plans in each of the schools and institutes appropriate measures designed to support the safety and security of all BSD schoolhouses. The installation of cameras and monitors responds to a review of the safety plans.

The future "entrepreneurs" have made popcorn, pizza, and other goodies, with many healthier choices as well.In December, the Council was able to donate to the Bangor School Children's Fund, which provides assistance to needy children for things like glasses, prescriptions, etc. We also made a donation to our own school fund for holiday gifts for disadvantaged children who attend Cohen School.

Let’s Moodle!

Submitted by Paula Maxim

Moodle is a Course Management System (CMS) that adds technology from the web to educational courses. Moodle can deliver online courses and supplement a student’s traditional face-to-face class. Over 30,000 organizations in education are using this free Web based program.

Moodle can be downloaded and installed from http://www.moodle.org.

Reading students with Ms. Paula Maxim have been busy learning to use Moodle, a dynamic online learning application. Moodle gives students and teachers various web-based tools for a wide variety of applications, such as forums, messaging, links to supporting information and blogs.

In support of the novels being read, Ms. Maxim uploaded photo files and extra i nformation to support class work. Each day, students logged into Moodle as a means to communicate outside of the classroom.

In class, students were involved in blogs about what was happening in their books! This lively Moodle activity allowed all students to discuss the literature read. Students posted their own ideas as well as responded to many other students.

Ms. Maxim also received some additional training from Martha Thibodeau, who is involved in the MLTI project. Moodle involves many applications and is a constant learning process for all involved.

Moodle has been a positive influence in Ms. Maxim’s reading classes. She and her students look forward to learning more of the program’s applications as they delve into literature during this school year.

William S. CohenGood News for December 2011

The Bangor Middle Schools Holiday Concert on December 20th was a huge success! Kudos to band director Mr. Steve Norris, orchestra director Mr. William Bell, and substitute chorus director Mr. Colin Graebert for putting on a fabulous concert! Kudos also go to the 91 band members, 20 orchestra members, and 45 chorus members who participated with great enthusiasm and an awesome display of talent.

92 students and 8 staff members participated in a school wide wellness activity on December 19th at the Bangor-Brewer Bowling Center. Interscholastic sports practices were cancelled that afternoon so everyone who wanted to could participate. Students & staff reported that they had an awesome time! Thanks go to Activities Coordinator Lisa Richards for planning the trip.

The Cohen 7th & 8th Grade Boys Intramural basketball league has 60 players and 7 staff members as coaches. The afternoon games have been very close and exciting! Not only does the program provide a place for students to play some basketball, but it also encourages a sense of community at Cohen. 16 Cohen basketball team members are officials & scorekeepers for the games and, unlike the NFL, there is very little trash talk… just some good old fashion fun! A girls only league and a 6th Grade league will start up in the middle of January 2012.

The Congressional Youth Leadership Council is an educational organization that hosts the Junior National Young Leaders Conference in Washington D.C. The conference is designed to be a challenging and interactive leadership program for high-achieving middle school students. Teachers nominate students that demonstrate scholastic merit, academic achievement, and leadership. Ten students were nominated by teachers at Cohen. Congratulations go to those students for being recognized as Cohen leaders!

Twenty Bangor Middle School students participated in the American Mathematics Competition at Husson University in November. The highest score in the State was achieved by a Cohen student, and two other students from Bangor scored in the top ten. Mr. Godsoe and the Bangor Math Team has some great recruits for next year’s team to keep the Bangor tradition of excellence in mathematics alive!

Once again, the students and staff from the Cohen school were generous with non-perishable food donations. We were able to provide Thanksgiving dinner to six local families. In addition to the full boxes of food, Student Council purchased turkeys, juice, and rolls. These were delivered on November 21st to the several different families. For December 21st Bangor Day, Staff donated 100 gallons of heating oil and students donated over 400 non-perishable food items to help those in need during the holidays! Way to go Cohen Eagles!

Also on November 21st, the Cohen Student Council President and Vice President were featured on the radio with Mike and Mike at the Bangor Mall. They represented the Cohen Student Council and donated four full boxes of non-perishable food items and a check for $200.00 to Manna Ministries. The money was raised from the sale of Cohen wrist bands.

GOOD NEWS!!
