Proud to support the NEW Moosomin Leisure Centre
BY MIKE SCHWEAN If having the defending RBC Cham-
pion Yorkton Terriers here in Mooso-min for a game was not enough, and raising thousands of dollars to put toward a new leisure centre to give our kids and adults something to do in the ever lengthening winter months was not enough, well how about this.
The Terrier / Bruins game on Satur-day, November 1 will also be a recogni-tion night for close to 10 athletes from our region who have recently suited up and helped take the Yorkton Terriers to national powerhouse status.
There will be names like our own Devon McMullen who was Captain of the team the last few years and has now moved on to the Regina Cougars of the CIS West.
The initial plan is to host the first of two AAA Midget games on the Saturday at 3 p.m. Then proceeding the Terriers game will be a recogni-tion celebration. SJHL gametime is 7:30 p.m. and icing on the cake will be a digital celebration between the first and second periods (highlighting many of Moosomin’s past stars) and again between the second and third (highlighting Moosomin kids presently
enrolled in AAA Midget and AA Ban-tam/Pee Wee programs).
This will be a true celebration of our past, present and future in the hockey world—a world where Moosomin con-tinues to claim a larger slice of the pie.
It should be just a fabulous evening! As for a list of those Yorkton Terrier
Alumni which we intend to recognize, here is a list of 10 amazing young ath-letes which our area has produced, and in turn they have helped the Yorkton Terriers become a Canadian Junior A Powerhouse.
These 10 individuals will be honored at 7 p.m. before the Terriers/Bruins hockey game:
• Devon McMullen of Moosomin• Brent Struble of Wawota• Justin Lamontagne of Wawota• Brenden Poncelet of Whitewood• John Odgers of Spy Hill• Dakota Odgers of Spy Hill• Austin Bourhis of Kipling• Kyle McLeod of Elkhorn• Curtis Oliver of Elkhorn• Derek Falloon of St. LazareThis should be a great event, giv-
ing some well-deserved recognition to local players who have helped build the Yorkton Terriers.
At left, Moosomin’s Devon McMullen, captain of the Yor-kton Terriers, hoists the RBC Cup in Vernon B.C. on May 18 after the Terriers won the national junior championship last season. Devon and nine other Terriers alumni from the Moosomin area will be honored at the Yorkton Terriers-Estevan Bruins SJHL game in Moosomin Saturday, Nov. 1.

Monday, October 27, 2014 The World-Spectator - Moosomin, Sask. C3Funds from weekend going to leisure centre
BY KEVIN WEEDMARKFunds raised through the Elite Hockey
Weekend will be going toward Mooso-min’s leisure centre, a dream of recre-ation director Mike Schwean that could become reality in 2015.
Schwean said he believes the proposed facility at Bradley Park could be open be-fore the end of next year.
The leisure centre took a step closer with the recent announcement of a quar-ter million dollar commitment from Pot-ashCorp for the new building.
The leisure centre will include three sports simulators including 10 different sports, two driving nets, an indoor rub-ber walking track, and a court area.
Schwean is planning the leisure centre, but no tax dollars will be spent on the building—it will be paid for entirely with private donations, with no town funds going into construction.
Schwean feels the 6,000-square-foot building could normally be built at a cost of $1.2 million, but with much of the labor and inputs donated or provided at cost, the project manager donating his time, and the town providing the land, the cash cost of the building will be $500,000. The intention has always been to pay for the facility without using any taxpayer dol-lars.
Part of the reason the building can be built fairly inexpensively is that it won’t require plumbing. The building will be added to the south of the bowling alley, and will be entered through the bowling alley, with the idea that one employee can watch over the bowling alley and leisure centre, and the existing plumbing in the bowling alley will be used for washroom and kitchen facilities.
The front of the leisure centre will be in line with the east side of the bowling al-ley. At the back, a large deck will be built bordering the leisure centre on the east, the bowling alley on the north, and the ball diamond on the west.
“We’ll have the deck facing the ball diamond, and for summer, it should be a good place for barbecues,” said Schwean.
Schwean said he hopes the leisure
programming, allowing more programs aimed at some of the newcomers to town who may not be into hockey.
“We get so many new people to town, and there are no programs we’re able to offer a lot of these people,” he said. “This facility will offer these people something to do when we have seven months of winter.”
Schwean said he was impressed with the PotashCorp donation. “I thought it would be substantial, but I didn’t realize it would be this much,” he said. “They were pretty supportive every time we talked to them.” The town has been in discussions with PotashCorp since the spring.
“I think it was something they’re inter-ested in because it’s something everyone will be able to use. I think they agreed with a lot of the things we’re trying to do.”
The plan for the leisure centre has evolved over the year. “We’ve done a lot of work with a lot of different people,” Schwean said. “A lot of people have com-mitted cash donations or time donations. Everyone we’ve talked to has contributed something.”
Schwean said the town already has someone set up to do the design work on the building, and is hoping to get more of the funds in place over the next few months. “We’re hoping for more dona-tions, and we have some fundraisers planned,” he said.
Schwean is happy with how well the project has moved along already, and he’s hoping more donations come in over the next few months so he can break ground on the project in the spring and open the leisure centre next winter.
“It was just the right time for some-thing like this in Moosomin,” he said. “Everyone’s been very supportive, every-one thinks it’s a good idea, and now with this donation we’re well on the way.”
The idea for the leisure centre came up after the town took possession of the bowling alley earlier this year from the committee that built it.
