Choosing a Technological Transformations Topic

Courses that fulfill the General Education Requirements (GERs) at UMUC all have a common theme—technological transformations. In following this theme this semester in WRTG391, we will have readings on technological transformations in the Reserved Readings. You will follow this topic throughout the course, using it to develop a critique essay, to create a critical annotated bibliography, to synthesize a literature review, and to write a final niches and gaps essay.

You have five choices for your research topic. Please chooseoneof the fourchoices.

1.Review the literature on the impact of the Internet on information literacy and library skills.

For example, you might review the literature on one or more of the following. These are just examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic.

a. The impact of the Internet on plagiarism in student papers.b. The impact of the Internet on research methods among students.c. The impact of Wikipedia and other web 2.0 applications on the use of information.

2.Review the literature on the impact of technology on the health care field.

For example, you might review the literature on any one or more of the following. These are just examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic.

a. The impact of a particular technological development on health care costs.b. The implications of maintaining a nationwide health care electronic database of every patient’s medical records.3.Review the literature on the impact of assessment and measurement on education.

For example, you might review the literature on any one of the following. These are just examples. Many approaches are possible for this topic.

a. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and the use of measurement in its assessments.b. The use of placement exams for entrance into colleges and universities.c. The use of placement exams for enrollment into entry-level writing and mathematics courses in colleges and universities.d. Critically Reading

One of the challenges students face throughout college is how to manage the information that they encounter. It is often difficult for learners to understand which readings are important and how to prioritize that knowledge. Students can struggle to understand the complex arguments that academics engage in.

Here are some hints to help you as you begin to work on critically reading for the course.

1. Prior to reading a complex source deeply, spend some time skimming the work. Look for headings, graphs, charts, and illustrations as these can be visual clues that indicate the author's meaning.

2. Try to take notes that focus on the author's argument. It is not enough to note facts and figures. Try to recognize how the author is constructing the argument. Put the argument in context.

3. While reading, keep thinking about the source. Keep asking questions. Write those questions down.

4. Spend some time writing reflectively on the reading.

You might also find material at the following link. Southampton Solent University has developed this material on Reflective Writing. Please click on the link below and use it to help you to complete the following assignment.

Many college professors do not allow their students to use Wikipedia as a source from which to cite. Professors are concerned that students will be relying on a source that is not credible. Why? Well, anyone can post on Wikipedia. In addition, anyone can post erroneous informationon Wikipedia. The information posted sometimes changes from day to day. More importantly, professors ask college students to engage with sources that have a bit more complexity than those found in an encyclopedia. College professors are interested in hearing from experts within the particular field that is being studied.

So, using Wikipedia as a source is generally a very bad idea in a college level writing course.

Are there productive ways to use Wikipedia to explore a topic?

Assignment:

Please read the following:

Chapter 13, Wikipedia Is Good for You!?

Identify Purdy's (2010) 3 main ways to use Wikipedia when researching. Using the Wikipedia strategies and your chosen research topic, please write a short description of howyou used Wikipedia for “1. ideas, 2. links to other texts, and 3. search terms” (Purdy, 2010). Please note any places where your research went in a different direction because of your use of Wikipedia.

Developing a thesis statementActions for 'Developing a thesis statement' SubscribeHide Description

One of the foundations of a good essay is a strong and focused thesis statement.Generally, I think of a thesis as a claim that is supported by reasons. Each of the reasons corresponds to the sections of your essay. The claim is the position that you want to take on the issue. It is your brief, one sentence answer to your issue question. It needs to be supported by reasons and evidence. A reason is a subclaim that supports your main evidence. A reason is often linked to a claim with the words because, therefore, so, consequently, and thus. Does that make sense?

In addition, I often like to say that thesis statements should have tension. That is, thesis statements should not be bare recitations of fact but they should expand the readers' expectations. You might phrase a thesis with tension in the following manner:

While many people believe X,Yis true because of 1, 2, and 3.

Of course, there are many ways to effectively frame thesis statements. Here are some links to help you as you develop thesis statements:

able of Research Findings

Actions for 'Table of Research Findings'SubscribeHide Description

The next formal assignment in class is the Literature Review. In a Literature Review, a writer evaluates sources on a particular topic and identifies any gaps in the current research. For the Literature Review, students will continue to work with the topic chosen earlier in the semester. As you consider the following assignment, it may be useful to view this information on the Literature Review.

http://polaris.umuc.edu/ewc/web/lit_review.html

One thing that Literature Reviews ask writers to do is to carefully evaluate sources and assess their ideas and arguments. The table of research findings asks you to look at each source with a critical eye and pinpoint the focus, methodology, and findings in that study. In addition, you are asked to personally reflect on the meaning of the source.

Please consider the following as you assess your sources on your technological transformation topic:

Read over Chapters 11 and 13 inWriting for Success.

Chapter 11, Writing from Research: What Will I Learn?

Chapter 13, APA and MLA Documentation and Formatting

In addition, there are several articles in the reserved readings section of the class that you might choose from if you would like to do so.

Chapter 2, So You’ve Got a Writing Assignment. Now what?

Chapter 13, Reading Games: Strategies for Reading Scholarly Sources

Organizing a Table of Research Findings:

I would look over your annotated bibliography and find 3 articles. Each article must report on the findings of a research study on your chosen topic. Finding and examining these sources will help you to identify the current research issues surrounding your topic.

Research Topic:Social Media and Education

Source Definitions/

key terms

Focus of study

(subjects, participants, type of college, purpose of study)

Methodology Findings

For example, a student researching the topic ofsocial media and education might come across the following three resources in the UMUC Databases. The student's job would be to read over the sources carefully and to identify the source (including citations in APA format), definitions/key terms used in the research, focus of the study/article, what methodology the author used, a description of the author's findings, and the student's reflections on the source itself.

Assessing Evidence

Actions for 'Assessing Evidence'SubscribeHide Description

As you put together your literature reviews, you will want to consider carefully how to effectively use your evidence. As the University of North Carolina says, "Does evidence speak for itself? No, it does not. After you introduce evidence into your writing, you must say why and how this evidence supports your argument. In other words, you have to explain the significance of the evidence and its function in your paper. What turns a fact or piece of information into evidence is the connection it has with a larger claim or argument: evidence is always evidence for something, and you have to make that link clear." (Evidence, 2013). Of course, you will want to be aware that the Literature Review itself does not make the argument. No, the Literature Review is where you examine all the available current research on your topic.

Consider the following video on effectively using evidence.

Task:

After looking over the sources that you've been working with, choose one of the sources and write a short paragraph why it should or should not beevidencein your Literature Review. Feel free to write about evidence that will not be useful.

Ethos, Logos, and PathosActions for 'Ethos, Logos, and Pathos' SubscribeHide Description

Modern theories about argumentation are based upon concepts developed in ancient Greece and Rome. These theories help us look at how we develop our evidence for essays and other arguments. The orators of Greece and Rome saw argument as a way to settle disputes and to uncover truth. According to Aristotle, any person who wants to make an argument appeals to his or her audience through logos (reason/logic), pathos (emotion), or ethos (ethics). These three appeals form the basis of any persuasive essay. Let's look at each appeal closely:

The appeal to pathos is an appeal to the reader's (or listener's) emotions. When one uses pathos in a speech, one is appealing to the emotions of the audience. If a reader or listener is moved to tears during an argument, generally the writer/speaker is using pathos. An argument that uses pathos will draw an audience into the argument using the audience members' emotions.

The appeal to logos is an appeal to logic. When the writer bases his or her argument on reason, then one is experiencing an appeal to logos. DNA evidence, statistics, and empirical research all belong to logical arguments. An argument that uses logos appeals to the reason of the audience.

Finally, ethos is an appeal that is based on the credibility of the speaker or the author. This argument will be judged on whether the author/speaker is trustworthy. People who are experts in a field have good ethos. When an argument has ethos, the reader/speaker will be easily accepted as knowledgeable on a particular topic by the audience.

The following video tutorial and reading may be helpful in communicating these appeals:

Chapter 10, Finding the Good Argument OR Why Bother with Logic?

Task:

Find a famous speech and read through it carefully. As you read, pinpoint the claim that the speech is making and analyze the appeals to logos, pathos, and ethos that occur within it. (You can find famous speeches by visiting the History Channel or through your own research.) Post a copy of the speech below and write a paragraph that explains the claim of the speech, as well as the ethos, logos, and pathos within the speech (or the speaker). Then, please assess one of your Literature Review sources for the use of these three appeals.

According to the Allyn and Bacon Guide to Writing, there are five main reasons why expert writers revise their work:They revise to overcome the limits of memory. "Because of the limits of short term memory, you can actively engage only a few chunks of material at any given moment..."(482).Writers revise to accommodate shifts and changes in ideas. As one writes, often ideas evolve. They revise to clarify audience and purpose. A writer wants to say something significant to an audience for a

purpose. They revise to clarify structure and create coherence. They revise to improve gracefulness and correctness (482-484).Often in undergraduate writing courses, a writer doesn't have the opportunity to revise essays. However, developing a strategy for revision adds a tremendous tool to a writer's arsenal.

Here is an interesting video on revision:

Task:

Now that you've spent some time writing the Literature Review on your chosen topic, how has your thinking altered as the result of the work that you've done? As you reflect on the process, please revisit the following learning object from earlier in the semester:

Reflective Writing

Here are some questions to help you assess your critical thinking and the Literature Review. Look overthe final draft of your Literature Review.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you read:

Does the Literature Review say what you wanted it to say? Is it all in the right order? Are the categories clearly introduced? Does it start well? Does it clearly introduce a Literature Review? Does it finish with a discussion of the niche or gaps in the research? Does it have the right tone? Is anything missing? Do you need to eliminate any sentence level errors?

Visual Mapping--Niches and Gaps

Actions for 'Visual Mapping--Niches and Gaps'SubscribeHide Description

You can use a “ Spider Diagram” to help you to structure your discussion of Niches and Gaps. A spider diagram is a visual tool usually used for planning your writing. However, you can also use it for evaluating and thinking about a topic in detail.

Print out your Literature Review and grab a blank piece of paper.

For more information on the Spider Diagram, please visit the following link:http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/educationadvice/9839678/Spider-diagrams-how-and-why-they-work.html

Task :

Try the following:

1. Write your idea/title/topic/thesis in the center of a piece of paper. Draw a circle around it. For the purposes of this exercise, you will use the topic of your Literature Review.

2. Draw a "leg" from the central "body" of your Literature Review topic towards the top right hand corner of the page. Label this "leg" with the first topic that you dealt with in your Review.

3. Add more legs moving clockwise around the page until all the sections have been included, with the final one being somewhere near the top left of the page.

4. Now divide each "leg" up into smaller "legs" with all the points that you made in each section. (Again work clockwise from the top left so that the sequence of ideas is maintained).

5. Finally, please be sure that one section is devoted to identifying any gaps or niches in the Research Literature in your Literature Review.

6. You may have to redraw your spider diagram several times until you find a structure that works for you. Make sure that you find a proposal structure that suits the needs of your Niches and Gaps paper. Please post your spider diagram below.

Actions for 'Reflecting on Niches And Gaps'SubscribeHide Description

When a student writes a Literature Review as a part of a larger thesis or dissertation, the Review sets up the writer as an expert in her field and introduces the basis for the student's research. After reviewing multiple sources in her field of study, a student identifies a place in the research conversation where she can contribute. Sometimes the student identifies a population that should have been studied but wasn't. For example, feminist scholars often research history for places

where women's contribuitions have been ignored or misread. Other times, a learner might identify a weakness in the current research.

Task:

Reflect on the process of writing your Literature Review. Write a short paragraph in which you discuss not only the gap in the research, but also how you discovered that gap. Please respond to at least two of your fellow stude

Literature Review - Final Draft

Instructions

The literature review is the main paper for this class. Literature reviews are written in many contexts in academic writing, in business, and in graduate school. The practice of writing a literature review develops skills in classifying research findings, synthesizing them, and reporting them to an audience. The literature review also points out unanswered but researchable questions in your topic area. This document should be eight to ten pages long. Due date of the final draft is 5/3; it must be posted to both turnitin and your folder.

Final Project: Statement of Research Gaps or Unanswered Questions

The statement of research gaps or unanswered questions is a short essay that reflects on literature review and informs the reader what issues or angles on the topic could use additional research and why or of questions that remain unanswered after having conducted the literature review.

The statement of research gaps or unanswered questions should be two to three pages long. Due date of the final draft, which is to be posted to both turnitin and your assignments folder, is 5/10.
