Oliver is so sad. He can’t find his ball anywhere. He must have lost it somewhere amongst the autumn leaves.

Tallula is sad too. She is not a very good sniffer, and could not find Oliver’s ball either.

Jacky called Oliver and Tallula for a meeting.“Let’s each go in a different direction and sniff till we find the lost ball. It must be here somewhere!”

O

Oliver went over to a thick pile of autumn leaves to look for his ball.He even asked the birds in the tree if they had seen his lost ball. The birds sang and said they did not know where the ball was, then they flew away.

The dachshunds and Jacky looked and looked, but could not find the ball anywhere. The sun was sinking lower in the sky.The shadows were getting longer and longer. This meant that the sun would soon set and it would be dark.

“Then I’ll never find my ball,” thought Oliver.

Jacky sat for a moment to scratch herself. She thought very hard. Then she called the dachshunds together.

“I have been thinking and I know what we should do. We can’t sniff out the ball, but I know who can. We need to call Leo! He’s the best sniffer dog by far. He’ll find the

ball in a jiffy.”

Leo was in the front garden. He was marking his territory to let the other dogs

knowwho was in charge!

Tallula and Oliver explained the problem to Leo.“No problem for me. I will find your tennis ball in a

jiffy.Let’s sniff around the plants and pots over here”.

Leo scratched in the water bowl with his paw to see if the ball was there. It wasn’t.

Page 11: Written and illustrated by 65

He had a drink of water. Leo’s paw had made the water muddy. Tallula was not impressed! She was cross with Leo.

“Don’t put your foot in the water, Leo!Look how dirty it is now. Who is going to change the water for us?

Anyway, we need to find Oliver’s ball”So off they went, sniffing all the way.

Leo sniffed around and soon yelled out: “I’ve got it! I found the lost ball! Yahooo!”

He rolled onto his back, wriggling around in delight, with the found ball in his mouth.

The dachshunds and Jacky clapped their paws and woofed with excitement.

Hooray! Leo has found Oliver’s ball.

Jacky, Oliver and Tallula were so tired from all the excitement, that they went to bed early, happy

and coIn future, Oliver would try to remember where he

had left the ball, or, they would just ask Leo to find it for them!
