An individual and group exercise to determine whether the target audience and the context of the writing is clear
1. Write two memos outlining reasons why a salary raise is a good idea. One memo should be addressed to the employeer and the other to the employees. Pay special attention to the structure of the writing
2. Learners swop memos and in small groups engage in discussion regarding the target audiences, the style and language of the memos and how clear they where
3. During a structured/facilitated feedback session groups will make suggestions on improvements and answer questions regarding the conclusions drawn in the smaller groups

1. The group participates in a facilitated brain storming session about a chosen subject. The group pays special attention while the session is in progress to critical thinking skills and techiques such as mind mapping to organise the thoughts
2. Individually prepare a well researched, clearly articulated report on the outcome of the brainstorming session
3. During a feedback session groups will share observations, answer questions, and make recommendations regarding the techniques

1. The group visits a library/resource center and are required to find source materials on accidents in the workplace.
2. Individuals are provided with access to the internet and are required to prepare a short report on the effects of accidents in the workplace, paying special attention to establishing the validity and reliability of the data and noting what sources where used.
3. During a feedback session individuals to present their observations, answer questions, and make recommendations regarding the research

A group exercise where learners edit existing workplace documents, change the layout of a document to improve it and make a fieldtrip to a newspaper printing and editing facility
1. Provide learners with the same unedited material, including various types of technical and professional documents. Learners should:
• edit the work for technical correctness
• critically review evidence that supports the arguments
• adjust the visual layouts to enhance the messages
2. Learners, working in pairs, are required to edit each other's work, identifying problems and proposing solutions. Learners to re-examine their own work, discuss each edit, and try to agree on final revisions
