The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually by Librarians to the writer of

an outstanding book written for children and young adults. It has long been

seen as the Booker Prize of children’s literature and was first awarded to Arthur

Ransome for ‘Pigeon Post’ in 1936. Backwell School Library has been a part of the successful

Shadowing Scheme, which sees thousands of young people across the country reading the

shortlisted books, for 15 years.

This year we would like to encourage ALL our students to engage with the process, with the

aim of reading titles you may not normally choose. You will surprise yourself and widen your

horizons. You may even wish to join the Shadowing Group at Easter!

The 137 nominations are now in for the 2019 Award (as chosen by Children’s Librarians

across the country) and the adult judges are busy reading all to decide a Long List of 20 and

finally a shortlist of 8, ready for the shadowing process which begins in April.

This year we bought all the nominated titles that are suitable for Backwell students so that

you can begin reading to see if you can spot the best titles.

There are books for all ages and abilities including illustrated stories, stories in

verse, books produced for dyslexic readers and non-fiction.

Our challenge to you:

read as many of the books as you can in the next 3 months

(books will be loaned for a fortnight only)

Prizes awarded to students writing reviews, and for reading 12 or more

We hope you enjoy reading some great literature and you may be encouraged to join our

Reading Group after Easter where we will be reading and discussing the shortlist before

voting for our winner (and eating cake along the way!)
