FROM THE ARTS ITIC D IRECTOR

Over the past several months, as we selected the projects that would be part of our first full season in our new artistic home, we were particularly mindful of work that both aligned with our mission and was reflective of the enormous growth and transformation Rivendell has recently experienced. Thus it seemed an obvious choice to kick-off our season celebrating the transformative power of “Reinvention” by mounting a revival of our 1996 World Premiere production of Anne McGravie’s semi-autobiographical play WRENS.

In 1994, soon after I arrived in Chicago, I had the great fortune to participate in a workshop of WRENS as part of Famous Door Theatre’s annual “Women at the Door” program. The workshop provided an introduction to Karen Kessler who was directing and solidified my relationship with playwright, Anne McGravie. Two years later, Karen and I teamed up again, pooled our (rather limited) resources and, with Anne’s blessing, went on to mount a fully realized produc-tion of WRENS. It was a smash hit, running in Chicago for twelve weeks with a break during the summer for a three-week stint in upstate New York. The production received rave reviews and our nascent company was honored with three Equity Wing Jeff awards – Best New Work, Best Supporting Actor and the coveted Best Ensemble. Rivendell Theatre Ensemble was borne.

From a personal perspective, it was the first time I had shared stage with a cast comprised sole-ly of women, in a production written, directed and produced by women. WRENS was without a doubt the most formative moment in my theatrical career. It continues to guide Rivendell’s mission, define our focus and inform our approach to developing new work. The original en-semble featured Mary Cross, Victoria DeIorio, Meighan Gerachis, Karen Hammer, Andrea Stark, Linda Waste, and myself. Elvia Moreno designed the set, Monica Rogina was production stage manager, Sharon Furiya produced it and of course, the wonderful Karen Kessler, with huge help from her Associate Director Scott Verissimo, was at the helm. During the last three weeks of the Chicago run, Jane Baxter-Miller stepped in and on the final performance in November of 1996, Consuelo Allan bared it all as “Chelsea.” The talent and dedication of each of these artists was, in huge part, why the production soared. But none of the success would have been possible had not Anne McGravie shared her personal journey in such a recognizable, humorous and ultimately, incredibly moving play. WWII acted as a catalyst for modernizing women’s lives. It provided women an opportunity to progress out of the traditional fields of women’s work into a variety of occupations that had previously been the preserve of men. We owe Anne and the fierce women who served alongside her a world of gratitude for cracking open so many doors that had previously been shut tight against us.

We have a very special evening planned on Sunday October 14th, when the original cast re-unites for a “one night only” performance and of course, in true Rivendell style, a hell of a party afterward with Anne, Karen and all the WRENS. I hope you will join us…..

Enjoy!- Tara

DR A M ATURGICAL NOTES

The play takes place during WWII, on the eve of “VE” Day, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany, thus ending the war in Europe.

The women depicted in this play are all members of the WRNS (Women’s Royal Naval Service), nicknamed the “Wrens”. The WRNS was founded in 1917, during the First World War, when the Royal Navy became the first of the three services to officially recruit women. Wrens were initially recruited to, as the recruiting posters promoted, “release a man to serve at sea”.

As the WWII wartime navy expanded, the WRNS followed suit, taking on tasks that the Royal Navy had previously considered well beyond a woman’s commonly perceived capabilities. Many Wrens were involved in planning naval operations, including the D-Day landings in June 1944. Wrens with language skills were drafted to stations around the coast to intercept and translate enemy signals. Wrens also worked at the Government Code and Cypher School at Bletchley Park where

German and Japanese codes were broken. Although few served at sea, Wrens did operate small harbour launches and tugs close to shore. Some Wrens were trained to serve as pilots on D-Day, taking the smaller ships across the Channel and towing disabled vessels back into port for repairs, which were often carried out by WRNS mechanics. Many Wrens worked in signals, communicating with codes, lights, flags, and Morse code. Whatever job they had, it was a common feeling amongst the Wrens that they were doing something important and they were proud of their work.

Though many of the wartime changes in gender roles were short lived, there is no doubting that wartime changed the immediate experiences of many women. They had opportunities to experience types of work that would have been previously impossible for them.

The WRNS reached its largest size in 1944, with 74,000 women doing over 200 different jobs. 303 Wrens were killed on wartime service. After the war the WRNS was made a permanent part of the Royal Navy, though women did not serve in Royal Navy ships until the 1990s.

As we settle into our dynamic new Edgewater home, we offer three original plays that reflect our own recent transformation. Whether facing the unknown, getting “repurposed” at work, or finding ourselves surrounded by unbearable loss, these plays remind us that the capacity for reinvention lies within us and, once tapped, has the power to radically transform our lives.

ABOUT R IVENDELL THEATRE ENSEMBLE

Over the past sixteen years, Rivendell has grown to fill an important role in the Chicago the-atre community as the only Equity Theatre in Chicago committed to producing works that integrate and promote the talents of women in theatre. Although lavished with numerous Jeff awards and critical acclaim, Rivendell has remained an itinerant theatre company.

Until now.

In March of 2012, Rivendell became the resident theatre company in this stunning new storefront space. Rivendell is rapidly becoming a leader in new play development, a major port for new women writers, and now, offers a brick and mortar artistic home for women theater artists.
