Archives Wrapped up in the holidaysWrapped up in the holidays The 12 Days of the Holidays likely brought more competition than Christmas cheer to the Wichita Campus. The options for the door-decorating contest weren’t exactly optimal and the decisions were difficult. Instructions were to choose two rolls of wrapping paper, one item from the first bag, nine items from the second, and six items from the third. Each participating department worked together to select the materials that would make their doors literally turn heads in the halls. It almost felt like an episode of “Project Runway” as each department tried to “make it work.” Much like Rudolph’s pesky shining nose, mismatched wrapping paper and random holiday items were put to good use creating a tacky Christmas sweater, Santa’s pajamas, a tree, an ice skating scene, and origami penguins, to name a few. At this time of year, we, of course, are going to find more meaning to the 12 Days of the Holidays on the Wichita Campus than door decorating, hot chocolate delivery, and tacky Christmas sweaters.
These fun events not only provided an opportunity for departments to work together in new ways, they also gave reason for us all to get out of our offices, explore the building, meet new people, and spread holiday cheer and goodwill along the way. There isn’t much that is merrier than that! We wish you and your family a happy and meaningful holiday together. The next issue of Jayhawk Talk Online will publish on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and will contain all of the information you will need for the following two weeks without all of the extras. We’ll be back with a full issue after the first of the year.
Happy Holidays!Happy Holidays!Happy Holidays!
That’s a wrap! That’s a wrap! That’s a wrap! Hallmark is credited with founding America’s gift wrap industry when, during the Christmas
season in 1917, a store in downtown Kansas City, Mo., ran out of the red, green, white, and
holly tissue sheets that people used to wrap gifts. Decorative envelope lining papers from
France were brought from Hallmark’s manufacturing plant and sold for 10 cents a sheet. The
next year, the sheets were offered three for 25 cents, and they again sold out. Shortly
thereafter, gift wrap became the first product Hallmark made that was a departure from
greeting cards. From these small beginnings, the gift wrap industry now accounts for $2.6
billion annually in retail sales.

How long have you worked at KUSM–W and what was your job before
you came here? I’ve worked at the KU School of Medicine–Wichita since August 2011. Prior to
working here, I worked for a Wichita-based company, Legend Senior Living, doing
marketing and project management for over 20 senior living properties throughout
the country.
What are your job responsibilities and what do you like most about your
job? As department administrator, I serve as the business manager and financial
supervisor for the department. The department of Psychiatry is expanding and
growing, which makes it a very exciting time to be here. I enjoy the variety of
projects I interact with including the clinical research trials, the clinic, and the
education of our future health care providers. The department touches the lives of
children, adolescents, and adults with first class mental health services and
treatments.
If you’ve taken the StrengthsFinder assessment and are willing to share
your top 5 strengths, please tell us what they are and briefly share how
you use them in your job. My 5 Strengths are Relator, Learner, Analytical, Input, and Responsibility. Of those
five, it is Responsibility, Learner, and Analytical I relate to most. The
“responsibility” strength is what commits me to the department’s success. In every
position I’ve held I was the go-to person and it is this “learner” strength that will
help me become the same person here at the KU School of Medicine–Wichita.
The “analytical” strength helps me to make the most informed decisions.
What do you do in your spare time? I enjoy traveling with Robert, especially to warm, tropical locations! I love reading
mysteries and invested in a Nook a year ago which I love. Also with the help of the
Wellness Challenge on the Wichita Campus, I’ve renewed my focus on going to
the gym!
What’s a favorite movie and/or book? It would be difficult to name a favorite book, so I’ll just have to say I love murder
mysteries ranging from James Patterson to Patricia Cornwell. Although I’m not
much of a Sci-Fi girl, one of the most addictive series I’ve read recently is “The
Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins.
Who is your hero or the person you most admire and why? I have had the fortune of having many role models in my life who have taught me
kindness, compassion, responsibility, hospitality, and integrity.

Wrap FactWrap FactWrap Fact During the Victorian period, only the wealthier classes
exchanged gifts and the gift wrapping of these gifts was
elaborate and expensive as each gift was topped with
ribbons and laces. The subjects on the wrapping paper
varied from snowy landscapes, to fireplaces, angels,
holly boughs, and St. Nicholas. In 1890, the
flexography process, patented in England, combined
fluid inks with rubber plates wrapped around a print
cylinder, creating a process that was ideally suited to
create stiff papers durable enough for wrapping.
