Presidents Corner – April 2017

Hello once again to all WRAG members. We hope this newsletter finds you enjoying good health and our beautiful late summer and early autumn weather. It has been a relatively quiet time for WRAG events over the last three months. Our new daytime Annual

General Meeting in February was well attended with almost 30 members in attendance, and a good healthy debate over the four resolutions proposed (below) by the management committee. To the extent that we ran out of time and decided not to show the Cyber Seniors video, which was made available to us by the City of Monash. We will try to get the video again to show at the 3 May 2017 WRAG Special General Meeting. A very warm welcome to new committee members Mary – Welfare, Gwen – New Members, and Jim – Guest Speaker Organiser. As proposed at the February 2017 AGM the following resolutions require a vote to be taken at the 3 May 2017 Special General Meeting, at Alvie Hall at 10:30 am.

1. Membership Fees 2018 (Rule 12) - That the Annual Membership Fee for 2018 onwards will be $15. Members paying the Annual Membership Fee before the end of the year, e.g. before 31st December, 2017 will still only pay $10.

2. Special General Meetings (Rule 31) - Future Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings will continue to be held as daytime meetings. Instead of holding Quarterly meetings, (including one Annual General Meeting), the Committee proposes to hold two Special General Meetings a year, (one including the Annual General Meeting). Additional meetings can be held if required.

3. Committee Positions (Rule 44) will be reduced to: President, Secretary, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Website Officer, Guest Speaker Organiser, New Members Officer, Welfare Officer and Catering Officer. (The positions of Vice President, Event Co-Ordinator, and Publicity Officer are all abolished. Membership Records Officer combined with Treasurer.

4. WRAG Annual Christmas Function - It is proposed that the next Christmas function, will be a lunch held at a Function Room at the Riversdale Golf Club on 18 December 2017 at 12 noon with an estimated cost of $30 per person, entertainer and organisation details will be published in due course.

Can I also mention that 12 of the 500 Club members took our longest serving (1978) and oldest WRAG member to lunch for his 97th birthday at Peking Land on 22 March 2017. (See the story and photo’s in the newsletter and on our website). Terry Spicer

Vale : Percy (Max) Rhodes

Percy Max Rhodes passed away on 23rd March, 2017. Max was a valued member of WRAG for many years

and he ran the Out ‘N About group. The trips Max organised were well run and he was known for his good

humour and willingness to help with others.

Max and his wife Betty, moved into the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village recently and he will be missed by his

family and friends.

SPECIAL MENTION FOR CLIFF IMER

The President would like to take this opportunity to apologise to Cliff Imer, for the incorrect spelling of his surname in the October 2016 newsletter, and for not including him as our 12th Life Member in the last edition. Cliff was inducted as a WRAG life member on 20 February 2012, and we published an older list of members. Cliff and his late wife Norma joined WRAG in 1992 and Cliff joined the WRAG committee in 1994. He gave the 25th, 30th, 35th, & 40th Anniversary speeches, as well as producing the WRAG 40th Anniversary Publication in May 2014. Cliff assures me I am forgiven!!

The Waverley Retirement Activities Group is running a Crazy Whist Day, and we want you to come along and bring

friends and family.

Crazy Whist is a card game, designed to be played with partners. You don’t need to know how to play Crazy Whist, the

fun is in the learning and being with friends on the day.

nb – no bowers, or jokers; so easy for all.

There are 24 games to complete, on tables of 4, with partners changing after 2 games, and winners changing tables after

4 games.

A break will be called after 12 games, when afternoon tea will be available.

Someone with an interesting story........

TOM YOUNG

The WRAG Group has enjoyed many stories from Tom

Young (who has just celebrated his 97th birthday at

Peking Land, Rowville). Tom is WRAG’s longest

member, and is our oldest member. He still attends

the ‘500’ card group on Fridays, and is a real card

shark. He plays with strategy and at least once a

week he gets an Open Misere (highest scoring hand).

Though Tom’s eyesight has been letting him down

and he has had a few months of illness, but he keeps

bouncing back with that signature sparkle. He still

lives in his own home and looks forward to his weekly

trip to WRAG, especially the tea and sandwiches and

Devonshire scones provided.

He often sneaks off with a little platter of leftovers at

the end of the day.

Tom and his wife, May moved into Mt

Waverley in 1953. They built their own

home after they married and raised a

family. Tom previously lived in Clifton

Hill (hence his support for the

Collingwood Football Club).

Tom and May raised their family, with

their son, Ian and daughter Jenny. Ian

lives close by in Murrumbeena with Toms

grandchildren, Emma and Duncan. Jenny

lives in Cairns, and last visited Melbourne

just before Christmas last year.

After his return from the war, Tom

worked at Pelaco in Richmond for 30

years. He joined WRAG in 1978 after

May died, and retired from Pelaco in

1980. His first activity with WRAG was in

the Golf Group, and after 25 years

playing golf he achieved a handicap of 20.

When he could no longer cope with the

walking required to play golf, Tom joined

the 500 group.

The Bi-annual Caravan and Cabin Holiday – March, 2017 – from Helmut Meuris

At the last meeting of the membership from the above a

decision was taken to shorten our outings to two days.

Bearing this in mind a visit to Marysville was set up for March

21 and 22. Seventeen members stayed at the Marysville

caravan and cabin park. Of interest was the fact that only

one couple brought their caravan, the rest were in cabins.

The park people were friendly and we managed to cajole the

community room for one night at no expense (Normally a

charge of $30.00 applies at this venue). The attractions in the

area where many fold, in particular Bruno’s garden and

Steavenson falls held our considerable interest.

One of the sculptures present in Bruno’s garden.

Some of us spent over an hour in the above garden admiring the various sculptures and different attractions such as

a sculpted fellow playing a real piano with the piano sounding quite real. (DVD?)

Most of you know, bush fires some time ago destroyed most of this garden, however the area has been fully

restored and surpasses its former glory by containing some most outstanding sculptures.

Steavenson falls were of great interest with some of our members challenging each other to climb the 84 metres to

the top. “Take the easy stroll to one of Victoria's highest waterfalls. The falls were opened to tourists in 1866, and

drop a total of 84 metres into the Steavenson River Valley”,

is the spiel from the tourist website.

This, however, only gets you to the bottom of the falls. I

can assure you the old heart was thumping away very

solidly on the way up the,

roughly thirty degree from

horizontal, path to the top

(approx. 25 minutes) .

Several stops were needed

along the way to calm the

old ticker.

Guess who sent a joke??

Juggler, driving to his next performance, was stopped by the police. "What are

those knives doing in your car?" asked the officer.

"I juggle them in my act."

"Oh yeah?" says the cop. "Let's see you do it." So the juggler starts tossing and juggling the knives.

A guy driving by sees this and says, "Wow, am I glad I quit drinking. Look at the test they're making you do now!"
