QUICK REMINDER

Remember that Danielle Devoss will be

here next class to observe my teaching.

It’s no big deal, but I wanted to make

sure you knew why someone was here.

Please don’t let her presence make you

uncomfortable.

TALKING CAREERS

As you no doubt noticed as you did

your module research, there are a

number of potential jobs for people

in web design.

One of the things that we need to

establish, at the offset, is the

difference between web design and

web development. These are key

terms you will encounter.

WEB DESIGN

Web design is what we are discussing in

class/the sort of work we’re doing. It’s

also the area where a student with a PW

degree would feel more at home.

Web designers work on design elements

(I know, obvious, right?). They require

HTML and CSS skills, some attention to

Java, some work with Flash, etc. Their

concern is with document design, color,

generating graphics and aesthetics.

WEB DEVELOPMENT

Web developers work more

specifically with code (not as much

in the HTML sense, but HTML, too).

They build and maintain databases,

create applications to present audio

and video, design animation,

innovate in other machine-based

work. Developers are not concerned

with the graphical user interface

unless they do both jobs; they are

concerned with the nuts and bolts.

WHY THAT MATTERS

It is important to realize that the skillsets

for those two types of positions are

VERY different. While this one class

won’t make you a web designer, it will

introduce you to the field and set you on

the path. A PW grad would be well suited

for a web design job.

If you want to be a web developer, you

would need a background in computer

science.

SOME PEOPLE

Have both skillsets and do both jobs

(often in a combined position with a

smaller business or as a coordinator

at a larger firm). This type of worker

is in demand, but there is a stigma

that these sorts of web workers are

the “jack of all trade, master of

none,” so top flight jobs tend to

illustrate specialization in a specific

skill (for example, a web designer

that is a flash animator)

WEB DESIGNER JOBS

I wanted to literally grab a few web

design jobs to start us off by looking at

the descriptions.

RECURRING

As you can see, certain motifs recur:

1) HTML skills

2) Familiarity with software

(Dreamweaver, Photoshop,

Frontpage, Microsoft Office, InDesign,

Illustrator)

3) Experience is desirable

4) Understanding of web architecture

5) Design skills (think art)

LET’S TALK

So you’ve done some research, and

you’ve put together your modules.

We’ve talked a little bit about jobs.

What questions do you have?

Let’s chat.

Homework

For next class, you have the following

readings:

Read for class: Color Meanings, Expert Color Choices, Color Theory, look around and read some of Color Matters and play a little with Color Scheme Designer.

I also want you to come to class with a website you feel is solid other than having made bad color choices. Have a link handy so you can open it in class.

We’re also going to move the due

date of Module 3 to February 24th

since we had some slow-down doing

Module 2. Check the schedule for

adjustments

Your twitter exit question for today is

this: What more would you like to

know about potential web design

jobs?
