GLAZIER CLINIC NOTES

GLAZIER CLINIC NOTES

FROM

COACH DARELL HAZELL

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

WINNING IN TRANSITION

HOW MUCH SEPERATION YOU CAN CREATE AND HOW MUCH SEPARATION YOU CAN KEEP

I. Break Points

A. Hard Angle (Most Difficult)

B. Speed Cut (Least Difficult)

C. Vertical Cut (Moderately Difficult)

II. Hard Angle Break Points

A. Route Side Foot

1) Drive into ground

2) Initiates Movement (2 steps)

B. Spacing of the feet

1) To close and it is harder to open up your hips

2) Feet should be slightly inside the hips

C. Body Posture

1) Shoulders over your toes, keep eyes up and stare through the defender

2) Indicators- looking at feet, raising up, and buzzing arms

D. Out of the Break

1) Get your face turned out of the break

2) Identify the flight path of the ball

E. Drills

1) W drill-10-15% speed, work forward and execute a hard angle break point, then backpedal, and repeat

2) Two line drill (Be Exact drill)- execute break points from both sides

3) Synchronized break points- 3 lines run at the same time, should end up on same landmarks.

4) Jet Drill-One line with a series of cones set to either side, execute a hard angle break point and accelerate through the cones (keeps them tight out of their break)

III. Speed Cut

A. . Like Riding a Bike

1) Lean shoulders into turn

2) Make transition within 2 yards

B. Route Side Shoulder

1) Drop shoulder and lean

2) Accelerate through movement

3) Get face out of break

C. Drills

1) Be Exact

2) Synchronized routes

IV. Vertical Cut

A. Stem

1) Keep DB in backpedal as long as possible

2) As far away as 3yds never closer than 1 yd, too close and defender can redirect

B. Slight Step

1) Head and Shoulder fake and come through skinny

2) When WRs hips are up the field then they have control

3) Turn your chin not your shoulders to look for the ball

C. Drills

1) Be Exact

2) One on One

V. Releases and Escapes

A. Upper Body

1) Whip Release

a. Release side hand on the defenders elbow to get him turned

b. Get hip to hip with the defender

c. Back side hand shoot (swim) technique-short and quick

d. Replace the hip

2) Scooch

a. When defender is in hard press position

b. To avoid being jammed, lean shoulders back and rock back on far foot

c. Execute a whip release or throw defender out of the way

B. Lower Body

1) Jab Step- Step opposite the direction you want to go, i.e. step left to go right, step right to go left.

2) Stutter- Three quick steps, for an inside release-Rt, Lt, Rt, for outside release-Lt, Rt, Lt

3) Sink your hips as you execute your release

C. 2nd and 3rd Level Escapes

1) Duck Under-used when getting walled by the defender on dig or curl routes, take hand nearest defender and hit him on the near butt cheek and rip through with far arm.

2) Duck Out-same as the Duck Under but used on comeback and deep out routes

3) Must be hip to hip to execute these escapes, if not it gives the defender a chance to recover and make a play

4) Stack Em /Pressure Steps- when WR gets over the top of defender-give head and shoulders fake and plant foot hard to make cut

5) Staircase-for horizontal routes when DB takes the underneath away, take a hard step up field then flatten out and continue horizontal route. For a vertical route take a hard step outside then get back on route.

6) Playing through contact with your hips is critical.

VI. Blocking the Perimeter

A. Stack Blocking

1) Alignment- Know where your assignment is lined up. Inside crotch position for inside runs and outside crotch position for outside run.

2) Bead Approach-Push hard (sell a route) then breakdown when DB plants foot to come forward you must come to a complete stop.

3) Creep (Lion in the Jungle)-Breakdown and take short choppy steps (baby steps), finish with 2 step approach and 2nd foot should be on the ground when the hands strike the defender, strike the defender in the nipples with the elbows in.

B. Drills

1) Mirror Drill-same as OL drill WR mirrors defenders movements with hands behind his back. WR tries to stay centered up on the defender

2) Mirror Drill with Punch-same as above only add a hand strike by the WR

3) Mirror Drill with Punch and Jump It-same as above only when coach yells jump it! the WR punches and locks on and drives.

4) Outside Runs-similar to Mirror Drill only the WR tries to maintain outside leverage on the defender by using outside and to punch near shoulder of the defender
