Multiple people are directly responsible
for WPX’s community outreach. It would
be impossible to list everyone, but permit
us to drop a few names who play
absolutely critical roles.
That would be Kelli Blohm, Kaylee
Carson, Marilyn Docherty, Sylvia
Farquhar, Daniel Gardner, Nikki Goodwin,
Roni Kidd, Kali Kukla, Blair Lemon, Darla
Metheny and Kelsey Robin.
They’re backed by hundreds of
people who submit matching gift
requests, as well as others who serve
on nonprofit boards.
Does it really make a difference? Well, we
put our programs and approach up to the
scrutiny of the Oklahoma Business Ethics
Consortium. Here’s what they found:

It’s a fitting honor for those who give so
much of themselves, their time and their
talents. At WPX, that’s what we do.

The 100th anniversary of horrific
events in WPX’s headquarters city
are approaching as Tulsa still works
to heal from a race massacre in 1921
that devastated lives, families and
businesses in the historic
Greenwood neighborhood.
These efforts are being led by the
1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial
Commission and supported by
local foundations, churches, the city,
the state, elected officials and
corporate citizens.
Major projects include creating a walk of
hope through Greenwood, the
development of a museum/history
center and improvements at the existing
Greenwood Cultural Center.
The commission also created a means
for civic groups to have a voice in
retelling stories about tragedies and
triumphs in Greenwood through a public
grants program for events between May
2020 and June 2021 that promote
“reflection, learning and racial healing.”
WPX is underwriting this program
through a $150,000 sponsorship as it
develops a new home office in the
historic downtown neighborhood.
Says WPX CEO Rick Muncrief, “We’re
going to be very thoughtful about the
role we can play in honoring Greenwood
and helping bring people together.”
Ashley Harris Philippsen is the deputy
chief of community development and
policy for the city of Tulsa and a member
of the Centennial Commission.
She said, “It’s important to remember
that commemoration is not celebration.
It’s not a jubilee. Blood was spilled.
We must treat this with the gravity
it deserves.
“Ultimately, if we’re going to transform
a system, it involves rewiring
relationships and aligning our values, so
we want these projects to strengthen
our community.”
More information about the grant
program and the commemorations is
available at www.tulsa2021.org.

There’s a compelling reason that doing
good is often referred to as a labor of
love. Practically speaking, it’s because
there’s a whole lot of actual labor behind
every good deed.
In fact, we attempted to quantify it. So,
we looked at our most exhaustive,
intensive annual effort: our Tulsa Area
United Way campaign.
We started with our leadership
committee, which is comprised entirely
of employees who volunteer to serve.
They sell jeans passes, conduct planning
sessions, organize events, and secure
supplies and prizes.
This 10-person team gave more than
64 hours each in 2019 for an estimated
total of 640 hours. For perspective,
that’s more than a week and a half of
work per person.
Then we looked at how many employees
attend special events and fundraisers,
and the time allotted for each. Here’s a
glimpse of that:
• 97 employees attended the kickoff rally
• 94 employees competed in a dodgeball tournament
• 60 employees competed in a lunch-time trivia tournament
• 120 employees participated in a golf tournament
• 100 employees served at Street School in the Day of Caring
Based on the time required for each
event, that adds up to another 1,732
hours of laboring to love. Together with
the committee, that’s an estimated
grand total of 2,372 hours.
That translates into more than 59 weeks
of work, or more than a year’s worth of
time for a single full-time employee.
The effort raised right at $294,000,
which comes to $124 of monetary
support for every hour invested.
